Q&A with Willie Henry

Submitted by UMProud on

Q. You have six sacks through seven games to lead the team and rank sixth in the Big Ten. That's double the number of sacks you had last season. What's behind your increased productivity?

A. There are a lot of second- and third-effort plays going on out there, fighting through the blocks. And the coverage out back has helped me a lot; there have been a lot of coverage sacks. There's also pressure from the other guys up front who are not allowing quarterbacks to step up -- or the edge pressure from guys like Taco Charlton and Chris Wormley is not allowing the quarterbacks to roll out. It's a whole defensive line, whole defense effort. Part of my success from my sacks comes from them.

Q. Where have you stepped up your own game?

A. Mentally, the more games you play, the game slows down. You understand more, and taking coaching from Coach Mattison, Coach (Will) Carr and (defensive analyst Antonio) James, helping me with my pass rush. It's taking that coaching and putting it on the field. They've taught me how to be successful out there.

I think like Lewis the chance to come back and win a B10 and possible national championship will win out. The reason I say that is because I read on Scout that with the season he's having he will definitely consider his options of going pro. With the recruiting class we're going to bring in and Mone coming back, that defense will be elite.

You can see in the answers mow much they've been taught to frame this as a team effort, even when talking about their own personal achievements on the team, which is a tribute to Harbaugh's coaching as well as the staff's and no doubt part of the reason this defense in particular is able to play like one great machine most of the time.

that he also said that experience has made the game slow down. When that happens coaches can start to polish the gems they have been carving. Mattison, with Hoke, did a good job developing the defense. The offense is a different story and we see that every week.

Alan Branch status? In terms of quality of play while at Michigan? I'd say he's getting close. IIRC Branch entered the draft after his junior year. I'm guessing we'll have Willie back next year though I'm no NFL scout. I remember Branch being so dominant at UM. While probably not there yet, WH continues to develop and is likely to end his UM career as one of the all time great DT's.

Willie was my Breakout Star pick for 2015.  I love this kid's strength, fire and drive.  He does not take plays off (Branch had a rep for that) and is in constant Beast Mode.  I hope that he comes back his senior year next year and does not leave early for the NFL.  I see him as a 2nd or late 1st round pick after next season, he is that good and has not reached his full upside yet.
