Q&A with a former Wolverine.

I'm a former student-athlete at Michigan... No I didn't play football but know quite a few people that did. Ask me Q's and I'll answer (within reason).

Trains A and B are traveling in the same direction on parallel tracks. Train A is traveling at 60 mph and train B is traveling at 70 mph. Train A passesa station at 12:20 P.M. If train B passes the same station at 12:32 P.M., at what time will train B catch up to train A?

You are right. Here's what happened.

I just said the distance between the two trains at 12:32 is x (didn't want to try to calculate the distance in my head) and was accomplished in 12 minutes at 70mph. The difference in speed is 10mph or 1/7 the speed of the train, so it should take 7 times longer to make up the distance 7*12 = 84 minutes. 12:32 plus 84 minutes is 1:56.

It should have been distance x in 12 minutes at 60mph. This the 10mph difference was 1/6, so it should take 6 times longer so 72 minutes.

I just got the speeds of the trains mixed up when doing the math in my head, which is why they always tell you to show your work. :)

I didn't play sports there, but I did once give a head nod to Lavell Blanchard while we both waited in line at Wendy's.  You can ask me anything, too.  It doesn't even have to be within reason so feel free to get wild with this one.
