I need a break from Michigan sports. Sigh. Go Blue
I think I may be losing my mind....
And you will really go crazy.
I need a break from life. All this sports nonsense just adds to everything else not going well.
I realized I don't really have any other hobbies.
There's just nowhere to turn for relief.
False, says our good old friend Johnny Walker.
well, except hockey, who won 6-0 on Friday and are generally exceeding expectations. they're even on BTN this week. watch that game, so you have a chance of being able to say "we beat Ohio State!" in the near future.
Maybe if we don't talk about them they will keep winning. ..
Hockey! Hockey is still doing well.
It's early, etc. That was a better team than we give them credit for, etc. The refs were all childhood friends of Clayton's father (I assume, since he wasn't fouled out by the 15 minute mark in the second half). Two of these are true.
Robinson and Stuaskas hurt. Thus the rotation is shot all to hell.
Also: the shooting was all shot to hell.
Tough weekend for Michigan athletics. At least we still have footba... Nevermind
Just get rid of Borges and all of these bad things will come to an...
Oh, just forget about it and go to bed.
Guess switching to the finale of boardwalk empire paid off. I can't drink again, have to be up early.

Dilithium Wings to Bolivia. That is all.
Agreed. Fuck that guy
Weeeaaak.
Seriously... Defense was pitiful... I thought we learned that taking the ball to the basket was good... Apparently not.
The good thing is this was a common theme last year early on(of course winning doing so) so there is hope for improvement. Really young team here, will only improve. Long season.
This is the best thing about rooting for the bball team. I mean we lost, and we're probably the better team, and it sucks. But Beilein's history shows that over the time the coaches will adjust, the players will develop, and the team will improve.
but do easy to score on M inside, and rebound. I don't see that getting fixed this year, nor recruiting in future years
Thats it. Nothing much else to learn
I guess I'll go spend time with my family or something.
It can't take much more of these punches... Better put it on ice and prepare for next weekend.
Also, say what you want about the football team, at least they didn't lose the game to Akron. This is an embarrassing loss
dude...you are a stupid piece of shit
I literally was asking what his injury was...they didn't mention it at all and I tuned in after he had checked out. So no idea whyhe wasn't playing. Just looking for an update on his status
Well at least you aren't calling for us to injury the other team tonight....
at some point but I am really happy that he benched GRIII. If Glen doesn't want to be there, let somebody else play. If he continues to play soft and passive, leave his ass on the bench. We need him to be aggressive to be a good team.
I think GRIII was injured after he went down hard on his back in the first half. He came back but it probably tightened up at halftime. Plus Beilein probably realized that we don't want to risk it in November.
A 1-3-1 zone is worse for defensive rebounding, it would have slowed the penetration though. I would have gone to a 2-3 zone, it would have stopped the penetration and slowed the offensive rebounds.
I thought of that, but defense wasn't really the issue in the 2nd half. Charlotte only had like 11 points from the 15 minute mark to the end of the game, they went ice cold for a while. Beilein just needed a magic way to have all of our shots magically go in
Needed to get stops late and couldn't. Irvin was a downgrade to Robinson on defense for sure.
It will only get more embarrassing Saturday, sadly.
another dissapointing weekend in Michigan sports. Oh and the Lions losing in Lions fashion was great too.
Go the U of Chicago route and focus on academics instead of athletics. Eh, I need a break from sports for awhile.
Huge fan of your work.
I can't stop clicking. Save me unicorns and rainbows and sunshine. Save me.
Whatttttt? Has this been broken out before? Where was I when this happened? Is this real life?
Amazing. I can't stop hitting it.
Hilarious, thanks
The fact that this works via the iPhone app is just great.
This team fought, but man this weekend was terrible. Football team, basketball team, the Lions all losing and I got cockblocked last night fuck this month.
You think you have it bad, I'm also an Astros fan.
We really need to work on boxing out in practice.
Why do I even do this to myself? Not even worth my health.
Hey red wings won tonight.
It's November so I'm more concerned about the health of GRIII and, of course,
Is also not getting enough touches. Once in a while, it's okay to throw an entry pass.
The game just doesn't matter except what the coach and this still, very young team can learn about each other. For everyone whose tender little egos can't handle having them lose and want to write them off: you're pitiful.
Coach B will have them primed for the NCAA's
HALOL! Go read the game thread and then say that with a straight face.
I'm not giving up on them - it's only 6 games in. But with 2 projected first round picks on this team, plus Nik being our best player, let's just say I've been underwhelmed by this team so far to say the least. We have no impressive wins (let's face it, FSU is our best win and they are a meh ACC team) and now we have a bad loss on a neutral floor to a lousy team. The Iowa St loss is understandable. This is not as much.
To be fair, Stauskas and Robinson were hurt, and McGary and Levert were in foul trouble. Still, most of the players did not look like they wanted to be there. I hate Dakich but he was right when he said there was no effort besides Stauskas.
I LIKE the team with less GR3... Huge 3 by Irvin late!
But when that 49er stepped on Nik's foot, causing him to roll his ankle, the writing was on the wall!
Still & all, nice composure in the comebacks, congrats to Charlotte
This team will not win without GRIII, see the game tonight. Like it or not his presence alone changes how defenses play us.
I don't agree with this one bit
Irvin was 2-13. He was also nowhere to be found near the glass (understandable since that's not really his game).
We've all been hard on GRIII, but his athleticism around the rim does help. We missed it today.
I agree with everything John Belein is about. But when your team is shooting so poorly, would it hurt to get Mitch some touches in the post?? I think he need's to see a lot more of the ball than he has, especially inside the paint and not hovering around the 3 point line.
How much more can we take?
Despite every that went wrong, we hit a few more FT's and we win. That wasn't real fun to watch, but experience for the freshmen will pay off when it counts later in B1G play.
for "one of those years"
People are acting like a game in which GRIII played less than 10 minutes (ESPN box score didn't have mins played tracked) are symptomatic of the program. "JB can't teach rebounding", we have tempo-free stats that show otherwise historically (at least on the defensive glass). We have been underwhelmed by GRIII thus far this season but a bone bruise (my best non-medical guess at what is going on) will impact his play.
Do you think he he remembers that this year includes our first final four in 20 years? Holy crap some people.
So everyone on this board loses their mind over 7-4, 9 gajillion Fire (Name) threads and I decry the fact it appears to be a year perhaps, I dunno, a step back and people come to blast that? Going WAY too far the other direction. Explain how it DOESNT look to be a year where the ball doesn't bounce their way, results be damned
To decry that after 6 games? In which we've had a legitimate shot to win every game so far I'd say yes it's silly to decry that at this point
Couldn't score. Couldn't play defense.
Stauskas looks great. Irvin looked so bad I can't begin to describe it. Terrible shooting and even worse defense.
Spike looks good on offense and terrible on defense.
We don't have a scoring threat outside of Stauskas.
The B1G will not be fun.
But our guards are allergic to throwing McGary entry passes! The good news is Beilein coaches this offense, not Al Borges. He will make the right adjustments.
It's probably time to recalibrate our expectations from "Final Four Contender with two lottery picks" to "Top 5 B1G team with Sweet Sixteen ceiling". And there's nothing wrong with that.
I just have so much more faith in Beilein than Borges it's not even funny. In a situation where we were young and shorthanded, Beilein called some brilliant plays out of timeouts. In addition (and this is my gut feeling) I think he wanted the guards to feed McGary more. I expect him to make the right adjustments.
Still came back despite terrible shooting. Beat a good fsu team. Burn the tape of that last game and move on.
things will be ok - the team is adjusting to life without the National POY/1st rd pick, 2 key guys were hurting, McGary is still coming back and the freshmen will get better. Look at the college b-ball landscape, lots of big name teams losing/being severely challenged at home early this year. I think the team will start hitting their stride heading into the B1G schedule.
Irvin needs to stop shooting. He made a big basket at the end but the kid was horrible the rest of the game. Where is Robinson? This team misses Burke which was to be expected, but I hate it when the game plan is just to shoot 3's. Go to the rim! What a great Michigan sports weekend this was.
Did you just start watching Beilein teams? As for Irving - he's got to shoot if he's going to succeed. He'll find his shot and you'll be glad he struggled against Charlotte and not MSU. Takes time - rewatch THJ (entire soph year). It's frustrating but I'll take a kid whose willing to shoot even when he's cold because he's confident.
Basketball has a long season. In everyone of Belein's seasons besides last year, we start out slow and get better as the year goes on.
so if our outside shots are not falling, we probably won't win. This game is about as cold as any team could shoot the ball. I haven't checked the stats, but it seemed like we missed a lot of free throws too.
It's a bad loss, but we'll get better.
31% from the field. Charlotte shot around 36%. We were 18-24 from the line. When you shoot 18% in the first half you won't beat many teams. These games are important from a cohesion and chemistry standpoint. We all were a little spoiled last year. They'll get it together. Just no fire today.
This may be an odd question, but why haven't we spread the floor and run high ball screens like last year? Granted we don't have Burke, but we still have capable guards who can drive/dish/attack the rim, and we have at least one shooter.
Our offense looked really crappy tonight, poor shooting aside. I saw LeVert run a couple nice pick and rolls for easy lay-ups. More of that please. Less of Irvin taking one dribble inside the arc and going up with an ugly, low-percentage shot.
I hope the high ball screen game evolves during the first part of the year into something we can trust again as a go-to part of our offense. I think we're just feeling our way around right now. Levert + Staukas + Walton should be able to use the high balls screen game effectively and consistently with time.
This weekend can blow me. Literally, just unzip my pants and gurgle.
Wow. Started off so promising. And then football just ruined it.
This is the second time we've been upset by these fuckers. They ruined the 1977 NCAA Tournament run also.
But hey, women's soccer! Good for the ladies, they're dominating out there. Could win it all.
Are you suggesting a Women's Soccer Appreciation thread?
Phil Hubbard before his knee injury. Ricky Green (I used to mimic him by throwing the ball ahead of me on breakaway layups in the schoolyard court),
Damn you, Cornbread Maxwell!
we have no interior defense. McGary was winded the whole game. Levert (our #2 scoring option) was in foul trouble. turrible shooting in the 1st half.
I didn't miss GRIII at all, but Irvin is clearly not ready for the big time.
Honestly, we looked like Duke- they have similar problems.
Hey, I'll take being compared to Duke in basketball any day of the week.
I see a lot of people playing blame on JB? I mean the only thing he can be criticized for IMO is we don't EVER throw it down low to McGary. Other than that he drew up three plays down the stretch that kept us in the game. Not his fault we couldn't hit a shot.
Not overly important, but hate to see the guys lack competitive fire in any game. The schedule gets a tad harder than Charlotte.
I refuse to be delusional. FSU is not that good and we needed a comeback to win and Charlotte is not that good and we lost. We are a fringe top 25 team and had NO business in the top 10 in the first place. Those of you (like myself) that were looking for those GRIII improvements coming into this yr please stop and let's hope the freshmen can get it together before we go to Cameron and get dump trucked.
If this shit continues, this could be like the 1990-91 season.
I have a feeling that game at duke could be like that one where Demetrius Calip was wide open on a dunk, nobody within 15 feet of him, and somehow he missed it. Microcosm of that season.
I don't think it will. If there was a mass exodus with Trey, THJ, GR3 and McGary leaving for the NBA last year, oy that would be bad.
We have a long way to go and if there is anything I've learned from John Beilein Michigan Basketball, it's that things can start out rough early but blossom into something nice.
The D Calip/ future 2nd string for the Fab 5 year was my first year of 15 with season tickets. At least we all knew they wouldn't be great. Highlights of that season were serenading C Web on his official visit and a double OT win vs my roommate's Purdue team.
Oh, and while I share some pessimism about this year's team, this year will be MUCH better than that year
Your forgot about Rich McIver's hair. That was definitely a highlight of '91.
Monkey Rodeo. What a shitshow of a weekend.
Here's to Stauskus & GRIII being healthy.
Too many missed free throws. I hope the hockey team can keep playing well. I don't have much left. I am actually starting to look forward to baseball season. That has never happened before. What a joke.
Hey we got Women's Soccer though
The stat of the game probably has to be the effective FG% of 35.23% from Michigan, which is still a bit short of Charlotte's also somewhat unimpressive 43.94%. Nobody was really shooting that well, but we were shooting worse. Beyond that, some of the other major stats for the game were reasonably comparable.
State. Let's not be overly pessimistic.
Michigan lost to a Division 2 school: Alaska-Anchorage, in the 1988-89 season.
That may be one of the biggest upsets in college basketball history next to UVA losing to Chaminade in the early 80s. But nobody remembers or talks about it because Michigan finished pretty well that year.
Go to bed now. You'll feel better in the morning.
You had gone to bed, we would have been spared one more f bomb.
Ya Mon, da happy weed...Glad the boys could have some fun in the sun. All three of the games were good preparation for the big10 season and beyond. Tonight's loss would have been no big deal except it follow Hoke's follies and the Same old Lions. At least the hoops team has no coaching issues.
After being down 0-24, he has led an incredible comeback. Pats up 28-24
Also, Jack Del Rio has out vaseline on his face and looks like he's sweating when it's 22 degrees out
Just like watching Michigan. D letting Denver drive down the field.
Come on Tom. Please have one more drive. I really hate Peyton.
Tom Brady deserves a big win after getting robbed last game.
4 yard route? Is Lloyd there?
Out of conference losses don't bug me as much in basketball. Let's at least go 1-1 against Duke and Arizona and then handle business in Big Ten play.
Makes you think this team can beat Duke or Arizona? They are having trouble handing no name players that couldn't get a scholarship to a real program. How are they going to stop Jabari Parker and Aaron Gordon?
"They are having trouble handing no name players that couldn't get a scholarship to a real program."
Like Vermont?
Lots of holding by Denver.
We need much more from GR3. Wow. I have other gripes, but let's start there
Taking the wind??!!!! Are you fucking kidding me?
New England D is a joke.
New England got screwed again. Totally awful no call.
All the ticky tack foul calls are going to kill college basketball.
