PSU Tailgating Questions

Submitted by dothepose on

I just got my parking pass for the game next Saturday and I was reading through the parking rules. I just have some questions to anyone that has been there and I hope this may help anyone else that is going there. But I have some questions on how well they enforce some of these rules. The most important is "possession and consumption of alcohol in parking areas are subject to the laws of the commonwealth", this sounds like a law made back in 1776, just wondering what the booze law is there. Also, no portable generators? The tailgates there must be lame if they  do not allow generators. I guess I'm looking for an overall general comparision to the rules at the Golf Course for Michigan tailgating which I've grown accustomed to and what I shouldn't do.

Also, I understand that similar threads have been done the last few weeks, just figured it wouldn't hurt to bring it up again as we get closer to the game.

I've been to Happy Valley a few times and I don't think that you'll have any issues with drinking.  Like anywhere, you should be careful about it (don't walk around the streets carrying a beer bottle) but you won't have a problem if you put it in cup or are just hanging out at your tailgate.

I'm not sure about the generator issue but you'll definitely see people with TV's in the parking lot.  We just ran the power off our car battery using an inverter.

Tailgating in Happy Valley is pretty good.  The fans (especially students) can be obnoxious.  Check out the Rathskeller for Happy Hour on Friday night.

On a completely off chance: anyone tailgating in Happy Valley who'd like to have a fellow MGoBlogger hang out with them for a bit? I don't want your food or liquor (rare vegetarian who doesnt drink beer), just going to the game solo and would like to hang out with some Michigan folks beforehand as opposed to wandering around Penn States campus by himself for a few hours.

JClay - where are you heading up from - I"m in the Arlington area and heading to the game solo myself. You heading up Saturday morning or Friday night? Could form a mini-caravan depending on when you're leaving. I was thinking Saturday morning but I too am also looking to find a tailgate to join as well.

Which one?

Vs. the University course, it'll be pretty much the same. major rules to follow: no bottles (if on grass - the cows will eat them), no charcoal, wood, etc. (i.e. gas grills only), no kegs.

Vs. AAGO - it will  be draconian, only because AAGO is like "Camp Lord of the Flies" compared to any lot actually sanctioned by a university.

Generator ban is new (and hella lame) http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2010/10/05/generator_ban.aspx.

Have fun; go blue!

to park in any of the lots adjacent to Beaver Stadium & they are only $10.  There are zero neighborhoods to park in and the lots are large but a pass is a must.

I parked in a yellow lot in '08 ... and there is zero problem with alcohol ... but remember drinking while wearing your Maize and Blue will get you noticed.  In '08 they hadn't won in 12 years and they still were trash talking ... so I am sure it will be worse this year.

I will be flying a large block M over our tailgate ... as will many of us ... so your friends will be easy to spot !!!   Enjoy the day ... and a great Michigan victory !!!

Go Blue !

There is an imaginary line somewhere on campus where open containers are allowed on one side (read tailgating) and on the other side an open container nets you a stupid fine.  That's a true story.

With that said, as long as you aren't being an A-hole with your drinking you'll be fine.

I'm going to be coming with my son (13) and would like to meet up with some Michigan fans, but need to keep it at least PG for his sake.  I'm not going to be drinking since it will just be the two of us.  I might be able to fit 2 or 3 coming from the east.  Maybe meet in Lamar or New Columbia?

Shoot me an email at [email protected] if interested.

Its too late too get one for the Michigan game, unless you pick one up. You go to the tickets portion of the PSU website, you to do it 2 weeks in advance online, or 10 days in advance by phone. You can still park there, you just have to pay 40 bucks instead of 10.

I think all their night games are white-outs.  I was actually at PSU this weekend, and trust me on this one  -  THIS IS PSU's biggest game ... EVERY YEAR !

They hate Michigan.  It has been Michigan ruining their "great" seasons.  1997 & 2006 come to mind ... and being OWNED for 12 years ... is reason to hate !

I will be wearing the home jersey for this game.  Please - if you are going to PSU ... WEAR BLUE !!!

Go Blue !

I'm sending my wife out to pick up mine during the day this week.  She's also bringing home some of her new kitchen cabinets and going shopping.

Shoot me an email (see above) before Wednesday and if we can figure out a way for you to get it I'll have her pick up some extras.

But not as much as usual, unless it's an obvious drunken frat throng.  Also, in the tailgate area (especially near the soccer field) be careful in the bathroom line ... I once saw a crowd of Nit fans surround a porta-pottie and bang and rock violently in an attempt to get the Badger fan inside piss himself.  If you get in line, I'd recommend having some people watch your back, so to speak...

Otherwise it'll be a great time... be sure to stop down College Avenue where all the pre-game hype takes place... typically many stores sell a pregame event shirt (UM at PSU, date), which might be worth grabbing beforehand.
