Prove you are a Michigan Basketball fan

Submitted by ssuarez on

The joke replies in the "Michigan Basketball Resurgence" post made me think that this would be a good post. (and it is my first ever).

List your favorite michigan basketball players from the years that the teams were not as easy to watch as they've been the last few years.

My cool story bro - I shared freshman year orientation with Avery Queen and Josh Moore - one 7'3" and the other 5'8". They drove around in a red ford tempo.

My favorite player? Probably Senior year Graham Brown.

Went to HS with Josh, so I took a liking to him as well. But my vote would be for Lavell Blanchard. He was amazing, didn't he lead team in scoring and rebounding all 4 years?! And he chose UM at the time. Honorable mentions to Daniel Horton, Dion Harris, and as a stretch for lean times, Evan Smotrycz (sp?) only because I wished he stayed.

Yeah, Blanchard led in scoring all four years and rebounding. Asselin never seemed to reach his potential. He was a big guy with good hands, good athleticism, and good footwork. He just never put it all together.

Graham Brown
Les Abram (first saw him as a sophomore at Pontiac Northern. Injuries in college hurt him)
Ron Coleman

I really liked Chris Young.  Nice guy, played hard.  His freshman year was the first year of Michigan's nose dive to hell from the sanctions.

I went to senior night at Crisler in 2002.  The team was awful.  The opponent was Ohio State, who was finally starting to turn their program around.  The game ended up being a 9 point loss.  The Buckeye fans in the upper bowl were assholes.  The game was already lost but during the final timeout, Chris Young ran out to mid-court, bent down, and kissed the block M.  I loved his loyalty despite the team's unfortunate results over his career.

Does anyone remember Browns pick at mid court? I think they were playing Illinois, the guy ran right into Brown and bounced back like ten feet. Best mid court pick I have ever seen!

Another guy that comes to mind. He was the captain of the team, and went to my high school. He was a geniunely great guy - The type of person that remembers everyone he meets, and treats them like they are his one of his buddies.

Yeah, he's a great guy. He knows everyone, moved back to A2 in 2005 for law school, and then ended up coming back again afterward. He was a good captain and a great leader for young guys.

It will sound a little odd perhaps, but I was always intrigued by the game of Lester Abram to a certain extent. He was a dead-on free throw shooter most of the time and played some pretty good basketball in his time in Ann Arbor, winning numerous team awards as well as a few conference honors. I think he might have been an AAU teammate of Graham Brown, now that I think about it.

I loved Eric Riley and Kirk Taylor that year

While the teams were great the following years, Jason Bossard wasn't. But I loved watching him shoot during warmups

Bernard Robinson and Blanchard were my early 2000s favorites.

And Petway, Chris Young, and Josh Asselin were fun, too.

Amadu Ba...if anyone can make a gif of his pancake of the fan pregame against state you will be my hero.

Blanchard was great too. I remember running into him at the IM building 3 years ago where he went to play pick up ball in the summer. Pretty sure I was one of like 4 people to recognize him as a former michigan stud
