Prospects NOT at the OSU game?

Submitted by MGoVa on
Ever since the OSU recruiting weekend, it's seemed like alot of guys have fallen off of the topic of conversation, but I'm guessing Michigan's still recruiting hard? Alot of guys who were rumored to be high on Michigan might not end up maize and blue; Grimes and Murphy- Don't want to announce until signing day, unless they silent commit before that there might not be room in our class? Furman- Already made decision, rumor has it that location played into it (MD-VA or MD-MI you tell me which one's closer). On a personal note on this one, you wouldn't believe how obnoxious Virginia Tech fans are. They go prancing around claiming that Lane Stadium is the best stadium in the country; the ACC is the best conference; Tyrod's the best dual threat QB in the nation. It's ridiculous, and while this season has been "humbling" for them, I'd really like to shut them up. Big Tex- According to his mom's wishes, he might stay committed to Arkansas? Stills, Jefferson- Not in the cards, might both land at Oklahoma. Baxter- More than likely sticking with USC Kenny Shaw- FSU lean? So that begs the question who we finish the class out with if we don't end up with these guys. Let's look at some of the non OSU visitors Christian Jones- Staying in Florida? I did see an interview of him where he talked about how he wanted to "play in front of all those people" (referring to the Big House). Sean Parker- Rumor is he's staying west? Tom VH said Parker IS visiting in December at some time. Dior Mathis- Oregon/MSU battle? Richard Ash/Rashad Knight- Both missed their flight, Michigan still in their thoughts? I apologize if I'm missing out on any info or prospects; maybe I have some facts I'm missing somewhere, this is just what I've heard. Any thoughts?

Sam Webb, of GBW and the Detroit News, has a radio show on WTKA.com and has pretty good insight on the team. He has quite the rep of knowing recruiting. When he get his "gut feelings" he is saying he knows something. His gut feelings are that Furman will be blue. At least that's what he said on Monday's recruiting roundup.

Location playing a factor for Furman doesn't necessarily mean proximity to Maryland. Maybe he enjoyed the location of Ann Arbor. Maybe he wants to get away from home a little bit. Location playing a role could mean many different things.

Maybe Tom or Brian can answer this. Are we still slated to get this guy on campus? I would think with the way Tay Odoms and V Smith have already made a significant impact on the team that would be encouraging for him. He's got a few guys he already knows on the team, and from his highlight tape he looks like he could be a very solid d-linemen for us.

You seem fairly pessimistic with your post. There's a lot of positive news on most of those same recruits. Grimes and Murphy - They gave the Michigan visit an "11" on a scale of 1-10 Furman - He said that his official visit really helped him make up his mind about the school he would attend. I don't know who Va Tech played when he visited but Michigan played Notre Dame so that had to make a positive impression. Big Tex - His coach said that he loved the visit so much he almost committed on the spot. Tony Jefferson - Recent Scout.com article info in header "Jefferson Jazzed About Latest Trip" - Nov 23, 2009 Chula Vista (Calif.) Eastlake safety Tony Jefferson talked about his most recent visit, to Big Ten country.... Baxter - According to Sam Webb on his radio show Marvin Robinson said that Baxter almost committed during his visit. Richard Ash/Rashad Knight- Both plan to visit in December Since the coaches don't have a Bowl to plan for they are focusing on a strong finish to recruiting. We should expect many of these prospects to get visits in the next several weeks and we will likely hear about a couple of players that will be new to most of us. I'm very confident that this class will finish solidly since the coaching staff has been able to finish well the last two years.

""Michigan definitely made me feel comfortable and I'm going to consider them the rest of the way." As good as the visit was, the Wolverines still have some ground to make up on a couple of other teams. "Oklahoma and UCLA are my top two," Jefferson said. "I'm still committed to UCLA but it's pretty soft and I'm having some second thoughts. My heart is still there but I'm also thinking it would be cool to play out of state and I really loved my time at Oklahoma and fell in love with the place on my visit.""- ESPN article Soo... was Jefferson talking about his visit BEFORE the actual game? Because that article was published the Monday after the game. I don't mean to write him off, he did say alot of good things about Michigan.

I love how everybody rips ESPN all the time but this article is magically 100% correct. Did you notice how there's a break between the first quote and the second quote? Yes the first quote obviously came after the Michigan visit but that doesn't mean the second one came at the same time. I'm pretty sure this is ESPN trying to get hits from Michigan, UCLA, and Oklahoma fans, because it directly contradicts something Tony said to me and my friend out of his own mouth. No I'm not going to say what he said, because when he wants to make it public he can do it himself. (And no, he didn't say that he's committing). We both go to Michigan, so he may have just been saying what we want to hear, but unless he was flat out lying to us, our chances with him are a lot better than most people on here think.

I'm a bit confused regarding your post. If/when Grimes, Murphy, and Furman likely commit (if they haven't silently already) there won't be much room for anyone else so I don't understand why you are concerned about 15+ guys that visited. I think the main reason to host these kids is to build relationships with their respective high schools. Also, "It's ridiculous, and while this season has been "humbling" for them, I'd really like to shut them up." So are you saying that signing Furman would then shut VaTech fans up? I wouldn't imagine that signing one kid in their backyard would make up enough trash talk ground to offset our 5-7 record vs. their 9-3.

Why are we not recruiting Johnathan Hankins? We're not that set on the DL, and he's pulling offers from OSU, Oklahoma, and visiting Florida. I have no problem with getting one big run stuffer per class. Just not enough space?

sam webb has yet to be wrong about a "gut feeling." i'm guessing that this won't be the first time. location being a factor could simply mean that he really likes ann arbor. beachum still sounds much more excited about michigan than he is arkansas. his mom seems to be coming around to the idea of him leaving home. i think we end up getting him. i'm also getting a feeling that we're going to get baxter. rumor has it he almost comitted on his trip. now he's taking another non-usc trip for comparisions sake. i think he sees himself sitting on the bench for three years at USC...and the chance to play immediately here. knight, parker and ash are all still set to visit. who knows what could happen there. we've been in the running with knight all along. we might have a shot at parker if he doesnt like the new nd coach. ash seems like he's completely lost, so who knows there. shaw, i think we're number two with him right now. hes thinking he might not want any part of the fsu fiasco. maybe a shot, but who knows. if theres a scholarship or two left over, stever mehrer and roy vinopal might take them. jefferson, stills, thornton, etc...looks like we're out. THE NICE thing about missing a bowl game (and not having a conference championship game), is that our coaches are all out there hitting the recruiting trails hard while everyone else is preoccupied with big games. It could be a very big couple of months for us. Hopefully theyre working hard on junior prospects as well!
