Projected J. Peppers Contract.

Submitted by MichiganMan14 on
Cool to see these young men finally get compensated for their talent and hard work! Jabrill is projected receive a 4 year deal worth about $10.5 million with a $5.5 million signing bonus. Taco's deal will be just a few hundred thousand short of those numbers as well. Great night for Michigan last night :)

Also Ohio has a 5% state income tax, while Florida doesn't have state tax.

Sure they still have to pay the jock tax for road games, but I remember seeing that Suh was going to save up to 7 mil over the course of his 6 year deal by signing with Miami. Yeah cost of living balances things out, but a dollar is still a dollar

a progressive tax rate with 5% for anything above $208,500 (so yeah most of his will be in 5% range) - mere mortals are likely paying 4% or less.  But it doesn't stop there.  City tax rate for Cleveland is another 2%.  Then, depending what school district Jabrill might live in, he gets another 1/2 to 2%.  Luckily few if any of the school districts around Cleveland have income taxes (not so lucky here in central Ohio).  So I'd compare a 7% rate in Cleveland to 0% in Florida or Texas or Washington or essentially in Tennessee.  For every 100 million you make, you save 7 mill avoiding Cleveland (or Cincy) and playing in those states.

Honest question. I grew up I'm Detroit Metro and obviously love Michigan and hate Ohio State....but I never disliked the Browns or took the Cavs serious. I think the Browns have a passionate fan base and had I possessed the talent coming out of college I would gladly play there. I think Hue Jackson will feature Jabrill and it's a tremendous spot for him to make an impact. I actually like him there.

Agree. Hating the Browns is a meme at this point. They are finally in full rebuild mode and assembling good pieces for a solid foundation. They know it's a 3 draft project at this point and aren't reaching for a QB who will inevitably fail with no surrounding talent. Peppers should be primed and ingrained in the system by the time the Browns are ready to compete for the playoffs in 2-3 seasons.

I feel it is just a knee jerk reaction. Cleveland is in our division for two of the major sports leagues and we can all agree Ohio sucks. So while the Browns are not in our division or conference, they just have that Cleveland/Ohio stink on them.

They have a terrible reputation for developing players and at this point bad coaching is just an assumed given for Cleveland.  I think everyone wanted Jabrill to go to a team where they thought he would be used creatively in a way that his strengths would shine.  Given it's Cleveland where talent goes to die, I think people are worried for Jabrill.  He's also going to be playing for a team with a fanbase full of Buckeye mouth-breathers and so any little flaw is likely going to be magnified and I personally wonder if thats going to affect the franchise's ability to be patient with him.

Finally, Fuck Ohio.

I don't hate the Browns. Like Denard going to Jacksonville, my concern is that they won't know how to use him and won't be able to develop him. I don't believe that they drafted him with a plan to make him successful. Therefore, I'm disappointed just because Cleveland is a place where talent goes to die. And even if they do have a great defense where he can shine, their offense is terrible which willl mean their defense is always on the field and set up for failure.

"I don't believe that they drafted him with a plan to make him successful?"

To make a claim as ridiculous as that, I can only assume that you are member of the Cleveland Browns coaching staff?  How do you even know what their plan is for him?

Because all I have heard is that he will play safety (where Jabrill himself has said he is more comfortable), he will be our return man, and Hue even hinted at offensive packages for him.  You know.....as in the exact same plan that saw him succeed at Michigan and made him a 1st round draft pick.

Are you referring to the coaching staff and front office that has been in place for 1 season?

Our owner is a crook, and I don't like him, but that makes zero sense. How does this coaching staff answer for all of the previous nonsense?

Also, our defensive coordinator could end up being perfect for him.

It's the Browns, their history ever since(and if we're being honest even before) their rebirth proves it's safe to assume the coaching sucks until proven otherwise.

You're amongst Lions fans, so you're among a group of people to whom it's safe to admit that your team is crap and will never get better.  We all feel your pain, there's no need to project such anger :).

Didn't they start sucking in the 90's?  And wasn't that part of the reson Modell moved the team?

Dude, the Browns have earned skepticism by virtue of being the Browns and it's not Hue Jackson is some sort of super-star coach guaranteed to work out(he might, he might not, it's still Cleveland).  It's not like I'm coming from some sort of off the beaten path angle here.  Not sure why this is so offensive.

Belichick made the playoffs the year before the team was moved.  The team's performance had literally nothing to do with why Modell moved the team.

Modell actually leased Municipal Stadium to the Cleveland Indians, and he was royally screwing them throughout.  The Indians finally said fuck you and struck a deal to get Jacob's Field.  81 games of revenue disappearing into thin air was the first domino to fall.

could be really good for Peppers. From his perspective, he is a 3 hour drive from where he played college ball and 3 hours by car closer home. He could easily roll into A2 on a Saturday and take in a game while soaking up the adoration he's earned, then cash in on Sunday. While ohio is a detestable place, and the many reasons to both loathe and empathize for the Browns, it seems to be a pretty sweet oppportunity for Jabrill. Good luck young man!

Hopefully not too big of a house.  While I'm all for the "take care of momma" mindset for pro athletes, in many situations momma can add to the financial risk profile.

My wife's aunt in Atlanta is living in a pretty nice house that a former NFLer bought for his momma.  Then momma went out and borrowed against it for spending money ... and subsequently lost it to the bank.

Crazy as it may seem, a few million bucks may seem like lifelong financial security, but it's far from it.  Now if she stayed in her own neighborhood on a few million, no problem.  But moving on up to that de-luxe apartment in the sky comes with a high burn rate on the old nest egg.

My wife an I were talking about that this morning.  Unfortunately given his family history, father in jail and brother dead to gang involvement, he will have to look outside his family for that advice.  Not being able to trust your father has to be incredibly hard and trying to find a CPA/Attorney that you can trust can be just as bad.

He's earned it. Congrats to him. Even if this is his only contract, if he gets a good financial advisor that invests that money smartly for him, his family will never have to want for anything ever again.

Not hard to see why he made the choice to leave. Staring at $15 million is damn hard to turn down.

Cleveland caveats aside, this might be a good landing spot for Peppers. They need playmakers everywhere, so if for whatever reason defense doesn't work out, they'll definitely give him a shot somewhere else.

Kid made a great choice for is family. It was dicey and risky but it paid off in the end. Literally:) the problem with coming back would have been exposing himself as possibly a better Swiss army knife than every down safety. If he had 1st round opportunity, he had to take it. He's smart. Going to be fun to root for him for the foreseeable future.

Seems like on the next NFLPA agreement they should work on getting contracts with higher guaranteed portions considering what they put their bodies through over their careers.

I know he doesn't have a clear position right now, but I will be very surprised if he doesn't make an impact one way or another in the NFL as long as he stays healthy.  He's too talented and (apparently) too focused and smart not to.

It's great to see him land a contract like this.

As much as I am not a Browns fan, if there is any team that absolutely could use Peppers from go, it likely is the Browns so it is - for him - a great spot to land, Cleveland jokes aside.

Good for Peppers. He is yet another Wolverine I will be excited to see on Sundays.

Has anyone seen any Pepper reaction? It seems like he was one of the only picks last night that was neither at the draft nor had a camera crew in his living room. I checked out his twitter and just saw him retweet some stuff, but no actual statement or reaction.

Hopefully Peppers can adjust well to the NFL, have a great 4 years with the Clowns, then sign a big 2nd contract with an actual NFL team.

Happy for Taco, though! Being drafted to a Superbowl contender has to a great feeling.

I'm sure this has been discussed before (and at the risk of being negged), but I wonder if Peppers draft stock would have been improved if he largely played a more conventional safety position last year.
