Procedure For A Monday Release?

Submitted by blue_shift on

So let's assume that Brandon has gone into full CYA mode and the administration has finally had enough of the Hoke regime's incompetence. Assuming that Michigan wanted to give him his walking papers on Monday, how would the logistics even work? It's obvious after the Morris situation that Hoke is done, but will Michigan's culture prevent a Kiffin-ing / Weis-ing of Hoke?

I'm assuming Hoke would be notified first, then his staff, the AD, and the players. But if there's no interim replacement waiting in the wings, can you realistically announce to the public that he's out? You don't want a power vacuum to develop in the absence of leadership, although if the reports of offense v. defense in the locker room are true, it already seems like there's borderline anarchy in the first place.

Do you start negotiating with other college coaches / NFL assistants behind the scenes while the interim guy does his thing? And what role do the Regents play? Are they really going to let Dave Brandon torpedo another coaching search? Even if he does find a top-tier candidate, what elite coach is going to want Brandon in the film room with him looking over his shoulder?

Basically, I'm confused on how the timing of a Monday dismissal would work. Personally, I think it should happen regardless of the logistics, but I was wondering if anyone closer to the program than I could provide any insight on how it would actually go down.

to talk to coaches currently under contract in college or the NFL.  Firing a guy now really doesnt give you a leg up on negotiations, it only allows you to exit what might be a toxic situation sooner.

That stuff is always done through back channels, otherwise coach hirings would take a hell of a lot longer.  Regardless of whether or not any actual negotiations can get done, U-M could know within a couple of weeks a list of people who would be interested in the job, and how much.

That is, if they care about doing it right.  I suspect part of the reason the Hoke hire was so badly screwed up is because Brandon didn't come up through the athletic ranks and doesn't have the connections or the know-how.

The next two regularly scheduled media things for Hoke would be:
1) Every Monday morning there is an sunday night interview with hoke on mgoblue with Steve Kornacki
2) At 12:30 Monday, Hoke has his regularly scheduled press conference. Any change in this plan would be the signal something is up. Im assuming you would see the beat writers tweet immediately if they received a notice that this was changed.

Is it? We would like to think so, but when was the last time you saw DB admit a mistake or failure? Firing Hoke would be an admission that he hired the wrong guy.

I mean, I'm as down on DB as anyone, but the guy's greatest professional accomplishment was going on television to "admit" that his pizza company sucked.  In fact, Domino's is still running ads about how much they suck.  Obviously he did that for strategic reasons, but pushing Hoke out and convincing people that he has a magical plan for the future is probably the only/best strategy available to him now.

No use wasting bandwidth on his dismissal. We all need to be realistic and think with our heads and not hearts. There is money, players, replacement and politics to consider. None of which point to dismissal this season.

As someone who's extremely close to the program, I can tell you that all of this runs through Gregg Henson.  The Michigan folks talk internally, bring Henson into the discussion, figure out what Henson thinks, tell Hension what they're thinking of doing, ask Henson for his views on what they're thinking, decide what to do, and then tell Henson.  The timing for all of this depends almost entirely on Henson's availability.

Why do I have a funny feeling that DB will put out a press release tomorrow saying he is behind Hoke 100% and that he is the right man for the job? I just dont see Hoke going anywhere, which is sad. That man should have already been fired.

Sometime this week Brandon will come out with a statement in full support of hoke. Hoke is not getting fired until at least January 1st, just not happening...a statement will have to be made though to settle things down from the medias standpoint. The program is in disarray now, but the AD's job is to make it seem like it's not, he will stabilize it all this week. Now that doesn't mean hoke won't get fired in January, but honestly, I'd be pissed if he didn't, this program is a wreck and if something isn't done quickly, recruits are going to start dropping like flies assuming hoke is a goner in 3 months. This may happen anyway...Brandon has to say something this week IMO...hoke isn't getting fired until after the season, Dave Brandon already said that previously.

"Officially" in January.  But they could make the arrangements well beforehand with the chosen candidate if they go that route.

Hoke's out Jan 1, new guy's in Jan 2.  New guy has enough time to try to keep the recruiting class together.  It helps that it is a small class and there is little new recruiting to do, just keep who has already committed from jumping.

If they go that route.

If we don't make a bowl game, which seems very likely, we would fire him after the OSU game. Waiting until 1/1 when it was clear to everyone that we had already decided to fire him so we could save a million bucks would look horrible.

Future coaches would not look kindly on the type of behavior.

As much as everyone wants I don't see any scenario where hoke gets fired on Monday. DB is just too deep in it and will continue to stick behind Hoke to all of our chagrin. I was somehow hoping DB and Hoke would be fired on Monday
