Prister: UM coaching staff is middle of the pack among ND opponents

Tim Prister, senior editor for the ND Rivals site, ranked the coaching staffs of their 2011 opponents, along with their own:

  1. ND (surprise!)
  2. Pitt
  3. Mich St.
  4. Maryland
  5. Wake Forest
  6. South Fla
  7. UM
  8. Navy
  9. Air Force
  10. Boston Coll
  11. USC
  12. Purdue
  13. Stanford

Really??? Not much respect, I'd say.....

It's not like ND has been a powerhouse as of late. I'm not really sure how good they are supposed to be. I guess we'll see in week 2(?).

There is supposed to be a lot of promise for them. Returned a lot of players, if I recall correctly. Their freshman QBs who got thrown to the Wolves in our game developed a bit as the season went on. Christ (I know that is not how he spells his name, but the irony is so delicious) will be healthier. They shredded Miami in their bowl game. Plus, one would think Top 10 after top 10 recruiting classes would eventually get you somewhere...it's interesting to think in one of our worst three year stretches ever, Notre Dame still went 1-2 against us. MSU went 3-0.

All I can say after reading that list is...why the hell does ND keep getting away with such easy freaking schedules?  I will concede that pretty much all of their opponents are good, but there really isn't any top end elite on that schedule.  Hell last year, Stanford was the only one, and I think that was a blip.  I can't wait until we're at the top again so at least they will have to play some top 10 team.  Either that or we go independent so we can get away with the same shit as well.

To be fair, and that is asking a lot considering how much I hate ND, the Domers used to play a very rigorous schedule. It has only been the last few years that they started adding a lot of "meh" teams.

I agree with a poster above; given ND's talent and the schedule they are facing this year anything less than 9-3 in the regular season would be a colossal failure. I expect them to go 10-2 and play in a BCS bowl.

Exactly.  They used to play a tough schedule.  Since then, they have now figured out that they are in a position to exploit the BCS system.  In the past when voters had to subjectively decide who was the best, a tough schedule is a big arguement for a championship if you emerge at the end.  But in this system, especially with ND's BCS contract, all you need to do is win a bunch of games against pretty much anybody.  Because they are ND, winning even against powder-puffs will put them in the BCS and if they were undefeted, likely the NC game.  At that point, they are only one good game away from a championship.

That's why I am, as a Michigan fan, in favor of scheduling really easy games and not playing tough teams (like we are going to have to play Neb and OSU every year, which sucks).  As a football fan, I love these games, but as a UM fan, I would rather play the murderer's row of Minn, Purdue, Ind, NW.  Michigan is in the same position as ND, in that if we emerge from even the easiest B1G schedule in history undefeated, then we would most likely be in an NC game.  Thus, we would be one good/lucky game away from a championship.

ND always rips on us and other BCS programs because they don't play any FCS teams or any EMU types.  What they usually fail to realize is they don't play many top programs either.  That have 1 or 2 tough games a year, the academies, and 7-8 BCS teams from the middle/bottom of their leagues (Wake, Maryland, Purdue, BC, Stanford with the exception of last year, etc,).

We have an easy Big Ten schedule this year and we still have to play MSU, Iowa, Nebraska and OSU not to mention ND OOC.

And only ND would make a list of their opponents' coaching staffs, and not only put themselves on the list, but put themselves at #1.

Lastly, I know our staff hasn't proven a lot as a group, but what has ND's staff proven?  That they can lose to Tulsa?  That they can beat up on the Big East when it's down?  Seriously.  At least Mattison was in the fucking NFL!

coached the crap out of uconn last year-hence why pitt is so high on the list!  I kid, I kid, this list is ridiculous. Best of luck to mcgee and co., and best of luck to everyone playing ND.  Go Blue!

I have imagined great victories, and I have imagined great races. The races are better.

I'm going to Wake Law this coming year, and apparently the protocol for getting football tickets is e-mailing the law student in charge and getting them for free the day before, either in front of the school or in your mailbox. Based on this alone, I'd say they're a bit less invested in their football program than UM. I'm not amused that I'll be going from B10 to ACC football.

On that note, can anyone recommend a solid ACC football blog (or Wake football blog)? I feel compelled to obsess.

Yeah right.

The national media I know probably won't have ND ranked any higher than 2nd in the AP poll by the night game. Never first. Or zeroeth. And those biased rascals would never imagine voting ND even as high as minus-14.

Neg away if you want as I am sure, judging by the previous posts on this thread, this won't be a popular thought.....but I don't really see this as horrible. Pitt and Maryland both have head coaches who have a better winning percentage than ours and are starting their first season at their respective schools.  ND and Wake have head coaches with better winning percentages than ours and so does USF.  I don't really know how how much they weigh assistant coaches and coordinators, but as far as actual head coaches go, I don't really have a problem with it.  I would say we have the best defensive coordinator of the bunch, but as I am not a member, I don't know how much they take this into consideration.  Face it, our head coach is unproven so far and until he wins games at Michigan, he will be seen as a question mark. Overall I think this list is a little ridiculous considering half the coaches in their schedule are unproven at their current schools.

"Michigan: (HC-Brady Hoke 47-50, .484 in eight years, OC-Al Borges, DC-Greg Mattison) - Do not be fooled by the sub-.500 career record. Hoke led Ball State to a 12-victory season in 2008 while the nine victories at San Diego State last year were three more than any other Aztec season in the decade. Throw in a couple of veteran coordinators, including former Irish defensive leader Mattison, and the Wolverines should have the stability that was missing throughout the brief Rich Rodriguez era."

This description sounds more positive than the numerical rating, Shrug.

Leave Michigan out of it...new staff, prove yourself and all that, fine. But the rest is crazy. Pitt, a cobbled together 2nd choice group of coaches with an incompetent DC and an OC who has never had a chance to show he wasn't just a puppet? New staffs at Maryland and recently S. Florida? At least MSU and Wake's coach have proven some stuff. And more established programs like Navy, Air Force and BC ranked so low? And certainly a new head coach...but Stanford's coach was still part of the program that was the most successful recently.

Is the list upside-down?

i agree that the rankings are silly. more notably, though, the idea of ranking coaching staffs — many of which have no track record whatsoever — is frankly absurd.

although, i'm perhaps more surprised by the number of people jumping on notre dame in general as well as their fans' mentality because one jackass on the internet (and prister is most certainly a jackass) wrote something stupid, particularly when the article itself is so tepid. if this was the standard for complaining about opposing fanbases, it wouldn't take long before you could bury every d3 team nobody has every heard of. its not like this was a press release from the SID.

tim prister is an idiot who writes about notre dame. there is an idiot on the internet out there that writes about just about every d1 team. not news.
