The figures, listed at the bottom of this story, are based on the amount each school was scheduled to pay its head coach, on-field assistants and head strength coach, according to USA TODAY Sports' annual analysis of football coaches' compensation.

Michigan checks in at $1,356,275 per win.  My Chippewas only paid $265,038 per win, so we've got that going for us.

Edit: Opened reply before OP posted the chart in the comments

Reminds me of a joke:

Two guys charter an expensive fishing trip.  They buy all new gear, and pay for a private aircraft to take them to a cabin at a remote canadian lake.  They stay there for a week, but only catch three fish the whole time.

On the way back, one guy says to the other "I did the math, and those fish cost us $2,000 each!"

"Well, " says the other guy, "Good thing we didn't catch any more!"

What would be interesting is the net cost per win ... (revenue-cost)/wins.

Michigan's "cost" per win would go negative.  So would many of the larger schools.

(A pet peeve of mine is when people cite a college coach as the "highest paid public employee in the state," ignoring the fact the coaching salaries are usually paid out of Athletic Department funds and not the general fund.  The schools with the eye-popping coaching salary numbers typically run in the black.)

Actually, when I clicked on the thread, this is what I was hoping it would be as this would be data that might tell a story, but salaries divided by wins doesn't really say anything that is all that interesting about how schools fare when it comes to overall performance. Even on this list, however, you're right in that it is easy to spot which athletic departments must make money as their own operation.

I have used this argument many times (athletic dept. is separate entity). However, the UM Athletic Dept. does not pay any taxes on all of the property they own/occupy/use. So they are still subsidized quite heavily by taxpayers in the case of public schools.

Correct me if i'm wrong, but won't our total coaches salary go down by $3 or $4 million next year?  Wasnt that $4 million insurance payment for Harbaugh a one time thing tacked on to his salary this year?   So look how economical those costs per win will be next year when split between 15 wins.

This type of study is for talking, however bears little as toward the health of any program.  Costs vs. Revenues is much more important.
