The previous coaching staff - Where are they now?

Submitted by The Mad Hatter on

This article is a slideshow, which I loathe, but it does have info on where all of the previous coaching staff landed.  Presented without further comment.

Hoke - Unemployed

Jackson - Unemployed (probably by choice)

Nussmeier - OC at Florida

Ferrigno - ST / TE at SJSU.

Funk - OL at Akron.

Hecklinski - QB Coach and PG Coordinator at Colorado State - Pueblo.

Mallory - Secondary Coach and PG Coordinator at Wyoming.

Manning - OLB Coach at Washington State.

Smith - DL at Florida Tech.

How well Nuss will do at Florida? His offense last year at Michigan was terrible. I just wonder how much of it was due to Hoke and manball!

An OL and some receivers would have helped.

Devin Gardner was a pretty darn good quarterback in 2012 and for parts of 2013. And it's not like he had absolutely elite wide receivers. His best WR was an undersized kid who hasn't really been able to latch on in the NFL (Gallon, obviously).

I don't see how people can watch Gardner's career and say, "Oh, he wasn't a good quarterback." He *was* a good quarterback. Then other s*** happened. If anything, it should teach some of us that there's a lot more that goes into QB play and team success than just the QB.

Do you atribute the horrible throws and decisions to the quality of the players around him or his own fault?  that's really what it comes down to.  Personally I think he's an average QB whose coaches failed him.  I don't think he would have hit Conner Cook levels of experience, but he definitely wouldn't have been the disaster he was last year.

Florida had no QB last year either.

Nuss will be helped that his new HC is an offensive coach himself that developed a heck of a QB at CSU.  Most coaches specialize on 1 side of the ball or the other and at least had coordinator experience.   Nuss did not have that here - I imagine he was mostly alone without help on offense from the HC.

I thought there were reports that Jackson was subbing at Saline High this winter and that his son was telling people he was going to get a job on an NFL staff. Doesn't sound like a guy doing nothing by choice.

Nussmeier, Hecklinski, Mattison, Montgomery, Manning...that's it.

What's even worse is we had 3-4 BELOW average coaches under Hoke. Which really set us back.

But he's not a horrible coach.

I said we had 5 good coaches...I never said they were good at Michigan, Nussmeier is a quality football coach. As are the other guys I mentioned. As is Rich Rod...it doesn't mean any succeeded as Brady's Hoke's assistant (or in the case of Rich Rod, with a ton of things stacked against him).

Hopefully that makes sense now.
