The previous coaching staff - Where are they now?
This article is a slideshow, which I loathe, but it does have info on where all of the previous coaching staff landed. Presented without further comment.
Hoke - Unemployed
Jackson - Unemployed (probably by choice)
Nussmeier - OC at Florida
Ferrigno - ST / TE at SJSU.
Funk - OL at Akron.
Hecklinski - QB Coach and PG Coordinator at Colorado State - Pueblo.
Mallory - Secondary Coach and PG Coordinator at Wyoming.
Manning - OLB Coach at Washington State.
Smith - DL at Florida Tech.

I think it has been pretty well covered in many posts what type of jobs everyone landed and how it reflects on the past staff and how their peers view them. And was reflected by their collective results here. Why rehash the negativity? Look forward not back at this point.
What happened to the OC prior to Nussmeier?
Borges is the OC at San Diego state. GERG is the DC there too.
Well as Borges always said, he'd walk to SDSU.
But actually I think he is at San Jose college or something not SDSU. But he'd still walk there if offered.
Borges is at San Jose State.
Michigan and SJSU actually play three of the same teams this year - Oregon State, UNLV and BYU.
So that's somewhat...interesting.
Borges ain't walkin' anywhere.
At best, he's borrowing one of those motorized scooters from WalMart.
I ran into him at a diner off of Michigan Ave in Saline last summer. We were paying for our food at the register and I told him I recognized him. To which he replied, "These days, I'm trying not to be recognized." I laughed, gave him a pat on the arm, and told him to relax but if he didn't want to be recognized, he should at least get more than one city away from A2. Then he thanked me. Sincerely. Which made me laugh even harder. I felt kind of bad. I know. Cool story, bro.
Heiko and Al were the best...
Borges has that deep soothing voice. Very comforting in moments of stress.
His real future is in some kind of therapy.
Not that I disagree with the larger premise here, but just to bring a different angle: don't you think their landing spots are more reflective of the fact they were at the center of a very high profile failure here than their underlying coaching value at the time Michigan hired them?
Again, not arguing that the staff wasn't deficient. To me this shows that they quite clearly failed in AA and the CFB universe recognized that, not that it was a grave mistake to hire them in the first place. It's a what have you done for me lately business.

I have no problem with showing where these guys are. I get asked once a week where this guy is and that guy. Nothing negative in first post, just facts.

Interesting peer group you swim in. I have yet to be asked by anyone even once (forget weekly) "What ever happened to good ole Curt Mallory?"
I think we've covered "MAC level coaching gets MAC level results!!!" more than enough times in the past 6 months.
p.s. Mlive should have thrown Borges in there if they were going to spend the time rehashing the dark ages.
He didn't get his own page, but they do mention him in with Ferrigno going to SJSU.
Are your "friends" residents of a senior housing facility? Otherwise why repeatedly ask the same questions?

But since my neighbor tells me the same story every week I laughed.
Mainly because I couldn't recall seeing the info contained in the OP all in one place.
Hindsight being 20/20, I'm surprised that we only had 1 losing season out of the last 4.
I think the fact that Hoke had 2 weeks to put a recruiting class together impacted his ability to attract good assistant coaches minus Mattison. The difference is incredible with Harbaugh. We poached Wheatley from the Bills, Drevno from USC, Jackson from 49ers, Durkin from Florida, Tolbert from the 49ers, Fisch from the Jaguars etc.
Hoke was in talks with Brandon well ahead of the actual announcement - he would have had the opportunity to piece together a staff for when the actual hire occurred, or at least one that wasn't made up of his cronies or retreads with unremarkable coaching backgrounds, Mattison not withstanding of course

He could've had a year to assemble a staff and wouldn't have the connections to get near anything what Harbaugh was able to achieve. Durkin supposedly had his pick of open SEC DC jobs and held out for Harbaugh. Ain't nobody doing that to coach under Brady Hoke.
they generally bring along most of their staff. That's especially true if they've been together for awhile and the previous coach was fired. Hoke did exactly what he should have been expected to do in putting together a staff. I never thought the problem was in who he hired, but in not demanding more from them. I don't think he was ever going to fire anybody and they all knew it. Good head coaches make their assistants better.
Revisionist History?
Except for Drevno, the coaches you mentioned were on failed coaching staffs that were being shown the door. None were being retained, so poaching from those programs is not correct.

I think by poach I would imagine they mean poached from the NFL. I think there's no question all the NFL guys could have acquired positions on another NFL team. One of the "failed coaching staffs" was Harbaughs 49ers staff. One coach went from being an NFL OC to being a WR coach for UM. A lot of these guys would be qualified for higher college positions than the ones they have at UM. There was a minute where we were discussing Wheatley as a college OC but he accepted a RB coach position. Durkin wasn't being retained by UF because they didn't have a chance with him. It was either Texas A&M or another power 5 team. Now hopefully they produce at the level of their reputations.
I would say it wasn't for Jackson and Tolbert either. What went on in SF was not about a failed coaching staff.
Harbaugh failed in the NFL
Plus Hoke was thought to be the choice well before any annoucement. He had time to gauge interest from other coaches. The incredible difference is that one is Brady Hoke and the other is Jim Harbaugh. His connections based on his previous coaching stops and his successes there far outweigh Hoke's.
Smith came real close to landing a big ten job.

With teams like Indiana, Purdue or Illinois I imagine.
San Jose State
Years. We had sub par coaching in a lot of spots and it showed. I think the staff we have now is really good and our rivals and the rest of the Big will see that really soon.
Not soon enough. I'd feel better if it was half that time.
The real answer was "out of my mind" before you brought this shit up

...and that deceptive title that tricked you into clicking on "this shit." What forced you to spend lifespan posting about something you consider "shit" is a mystery.
Who cares. They gave the fan base nothing but heartache.

How important a competent QB is. Had Michigan had better QBs, who could hold onto the ball and manage a game, Hoke would still probably be the coach.
They had 2 (!) 5 star recruits at QB on their roster and one former All American and BIG Offensive POY at QB. Their QBs not being good was as much on them as it was on the players themselves for not panning out over 4 years.
When our rivals are trotting out Connor Cook (3 star) and Cardale Jones (3 star RS SR who hadn't started a game in his career) and winning championships, the excuses become exhausting.
Sorry RS Soph** not SR
Jones is only a junior

I'm happy that these coaches were able to get jobs so that they can continue to provide for their families.
*Yet still making more money than almost all of us will this year.
After four years of having to be a 100 hour a week sock puppet when he signed up to be a football coach, I don't begrudge Hoke his money. I hope he enjoys it. And if he has saved it or invested it so well he never has to work again, that would be fine with me, too.
If I were in his shoes, I would definitely be taking the year off to decompress and detox from the business of coaching football.
up with jobs that probably reflected their coaching...
Why did I think Hoke went to Oregon State?
he visited there when he was on his "teach me how to coach football" tour.
He still has one more year on his Michigan contract. I suppose he will get a Div 2 gig in the next couple of years.
He'll get something better than Division 2 for sure.
