I wonder if this has anything to do with the upcoming gubernatorial election. Not implying, just speculating.
President Obama to give 2010 Commencement Address
I don't see how a spring commencement address could have much impact on a November election.
I'd probably say the gesture alone is something that can be cited by someone.
I don't understand this argument. How would someone cite this visit, and how would it affect the gubernatorial race? "Obama delivered the commencement address at U-M six months ago, so vote for me?"
I was just thinking that politicians can think up many ways to use it for their advantage. It isn't that he came so vote for me, it's more that they could use video clips of him saying what U of M students and recent grads can do for the State of Michigan. Every commencement speaker talks about how each student needs to go forward and do something special. With the current economic climate, there's no way Obama doesn't make mention of that, and the close ties to the auto industry, in his speech. I can just see little clips here and there, and the candidate saying "I'm Joe Schmo. President Obama wants X for Michigan, and I'm the guy to get it for you." The visual of Obama, at the Big House, the state's flagship university, #1 hospital system (healthcare spending), will be a very easy tool to use coming very shortly after commencement. I mean, commercials have already started, so the 6 months thing doesn't really matter.
That would be completely classless. Doing so would probably engender more resentment in the audience than anything, as many ideological supporters would find it in poor taste as well as the people who disagree to begin with.
When Clinton came back in 07, 'twas during Hillary's campaign to win the Democratic nomination ... and there were these abortion protesters. Whom I could rant about for a while... but won't. Let's just say, their demise will result in a net gain for human civilization.
Anyway, Bill couldn't have been more non-political and the idiots ended up with egg on their face.
Yeah, I'm not saying that it would, just that it could. This is a kind of discussion that need not take place here, so we can leave it at that. For the record, I think that this is huge for the University, regardless of politics. From MSU rubbing Condi in our faces a few years back, I guess it doesn't get bigger than the sitting POTUS.
You're being obtuse.
than the guy who invented Spell Check... noooooo way!
(though Bo did get his honorary that year...)
It sounds like from some prior posts that you live in the New Orleans area?
My husband and I are heading there next Thursday for 5 nights. We'll stay the first 3 in New Orleans (we know what to do and where to stay because we've been there several times before). But, we are thinking of resting our livers for the final 2 nights (sorta, not totally, just not the full-blown thing we do on Bourbon Street).
Any suggestions on where we should go / stay (B&B?) / eat? Avery Island? Lafayette? Baton Rouge? We're 50ish but pretend we are 30 year-olds. We love good food, dive bars, want to see the interesting sights near New Orleans that we haven't been to before.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
If you can make it to New Orleans try staying on the West Bank as its called. See if there are any open hotels in Gretna or Harvey (suburbs of New Orleans). They might all be booked but the party is still going from last Sunday.
I would have preferred a president. But whatever. Totally not bitter.
They need to record that in HD and use his "Go Blue" in all future commercials.
How sad is it that when the President of the United States comes to campus that you would actually get negged for being excited about it?
Dude, dont pay attention to the point system. Mgoblog is just like anything else in life, people will hate on you if you dont agree with them, or what they have to say. Fuck it, just express your opinion openly, and tell the haters to suck a fatty.
That's pretty sweet. That's two presidents within 5 years. I remember that when I first got to U of M people complained about the quality of the graduation speakers but they have really stepped up their game in recent years.
Thats for my graduation!
High five, me too.
For my graduation, we had Christiane Amanpour for the general graduation speaker, and Larry Page for the engineering graduation speaker. Great selection; very pleased with speeches and quality of speakers.
I can never remember the guy's name, but the 2004 speaker looked just like Santa Clause. I was so bummed that we got a nobody speaker (he had created 'Automobile' magazine, I think). He started by reading from an annoyed letter to the Daily (everyone pointed out the writer in the audiance) and admitting he also had no idea why he was selected. He then launched into one of the best speeches I've ever heard--all about the tough lessons he had learned and how he had used them well. He got a standing ovation if I remember correctly.
awesome! i only wish he was coming next year for mine. oh well, i'll just have to hold out for Kim Jung-il. Edit: sarcasm on the second half of that. not on the first.
Sadly, my speaker wasn't quite so exciting, so I skipped the Big House graduation in 05.
Howeva, my little brother is graduating this year, so I'll get to attend!
Wow what an upgrade from the worst speaker ever larry page to the pres himself.
I think Obama prefers this side of the Notre Dame-Michigan rivalry.
(Redacted... Probably too close to committing the MGoCardinalSin.)
That's kind of sad that you have to do that when every poster who likes him can say how awesome they think it is. I'm a big fan of the "one rule" and I could care less either way who the speaker is, but it's kind of ridiculous that you can't say what you want to about it. Saying that you don't like him or aren't a fan of this isn't a political statement, but guaranteed anyone who said it will be negged like crazy for saying it (just like I probably will be for saying this).
From what I see, no one has made any political comments about him speaking, they've just been showing their excitement about Obama coming to speak at UM. Having any sitting President as a commencement speaker is a big deal. If Bush had come to speak, the reaction might have been different, but negative sentiment would still not belong on the MGoBoard.
That's ridiculous. Why exactly would "negative sentiment" not belong here? If someone thinks that the whole idea of commencement speakers as being at all relevant and important is stupid, that's negative sentiment and most certainly not a political statement, and most assuredly does belong on the MGoBoard.
But assuming that people do think there is relevance to the topic, one would have to have a political leaning or be completely irrational to speak negatively about having THE MOST PRESTIGIOUS PERSON IN THE WORLD as the commencement speaker. Negged either way
EDIT - My entire point is that I think the entire commencement speaker idea is stupid, no matter who it is. Apparently some of you want to make that into a political statement, and that's fine, but the fact of the matter is that it wasn't and wasn't intended to be. It was simply a comment on the event itself. I would have said the same thing no matter who the speaker is, but since we don't have a thread about who the speaker isn't or a thread about the topic of speakers in general, I commented here.
So, you think commencement speakers are irrelevant and stupid?
But I don't want to get the horns.
(wrong movie for Clarence, I know)
Clarence, if you haven't noticed, his comment didn't get negged, nor did your original one. You're getting negged now for making an issue where literally none existed - NOBODY got negged or ripped on, or anything for their point of view. You're getting shit now for making it an issue.
Ummm... yeah... might want to look at the time that the comment was made and then maybe consider what the pos/neg count was at that time. Just a thought. Your post isn't exactly timely to actually comment on the same matter that I was commenting on at the time. At the time that I made my comments on this he had a good number of "negs"; thus I made the observation that I did. You do realize that the negs/pos change over time, right?
but George HW Bush spoke in 91.
GWB spoke in my hometown during undergrad. I went to see him speak because like it or not, he was the most influential person in the world at the time.
/neither a republican nor a democrat.
"/neither a republican nor a democrat."
Same here, and I saw GWB speak once as well. I was struck by the fact that he wasn't nearly as bad of a speaker as he appeared to be when I saw him on television. Gave the whole speech without notes or a teleprompter and never fumbled around at all. I was really surprised by that.
EDIT - I can't even begin to say how hilarious I think it is that some of you are negging this post. There is NOTHING that could possibly be controversial or even disagreeable in what I've written here considering that it's a simple observation of my own experience. Too funny...
I agree that there is no possible way to take anything negative from your post.
I plus'd most of your comments above, except when you said that a commencement speaker is irrelevant. It is pretty sad.
Haha, thanks. I realize that my position on the importance of speakers is an outlier. I'm cool with that.
I bet he feels threatened by Zoltan's emperorship. Sorry bud, my allegiance lies with the punter before the president, it's nothing personal.
Hopefully this will be a golden opportunity to affect meaningful change in our community.
My dream scenario involves his speech focusing on the need to eliminate the scourge that is RAWK MUZIK at college football games.
hoping for change ... back to winning teams and no rawk musik. Those have to be progressive ideals, right?
(So old my class had Bush Sr.)
I think it's cool beans
My housemate is rocking the benediction. He's super nervous now
I still preferred Bill Clinton for my graduation back in 2007, but I may need to try to find a ticket to this event now.
Impact on recruiting?
Looking forward to a chart...
ARGH why can't he wait a year (maybe 2 not sure)?!!
How bad were previous commencement speakers? Mine was Cathy Guisewite...from the Cathy cartoon strips. One reason why I didn't even go...
Really? The Cathy cartoon creator? That's so...awful. Did she talk about clothes and crappy comic strips? She's an expert on both, I'd imagine.
WAY better than Obama in my opinion.
In the 1988 graduation debacle. I don't know who heckled more, the graduates or the parents.
Every person at any graduation deserves the respect of being heard, regardless of political views. That was the one thing I hated about some of our students (and parents).
My sister was so pumped when she heard that.... too bad shes a sophmore
Ohio State getting Biden.
Wish I was class of '10 instead of '11...the President giving your commencement would be a good one to tell the grandkids about.
I had Bill Clinton and he was real good. But honestly, our student speaker rivaled Bill. He was awesome and if I remember correctly, he got a standing ovation. A bunch of people thought he actually gave the better speech over BC.
I remember that also. I think Clinton went out of his way to compliment him.
Yeah, I think that student speaker went on to become a Rhodes Scholar. I also thought he did very well.
Yes I know Abdul personally and he is indeed a great person. He's in Oxford doing his Rhodes study.
I enjoyed the BC speech. The student did a fine job but the speeches were too different in intention to compare. I preferred Clinton's, but he went for the whole wake up call, rallying the troops type stuff whereas the student got some decent yuks. Probably was 45 minutes compared to 5 minutes as well.
I happened to graduate the semester earlier and was pissed to have my internship start before spring commencement. I was stuck with Dave Bing, who was terrible. Really bad.
He's coming to make sure UofM graduates stay home and help rebuild the state. The engineering and the business schools are the future of the economy. I'm hoping he mentions this in his speech.
Ah, damn. I'm always a year behind or a year ahead of these things. Oh well, Larry Page was still a cool guy. Hopefully he'll give me an in when SkyNe...I mean Google, runs the world.
Better hope his teleprompter is working.
If it isn't he can always jot notes down on his hand.
And let's leave it right there.
Gerald Ford was my kind of President. #48 played on two undefeated U of M football NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP teams in 32 and 33. The 47 and 48 teams are the last two back to back undefeated teams we have seen at Michigan. We will never see that again.
You ever hear of OBAMA playing on any organized team other than ACORN? Oh I know why he didn't, he couldn't produce his birth certificate to determine how old he was.
Is that you, Abe Simpson?
2. Obama played basketball through college.
Obviously, Captain O you have no idea what organized means. To say that OBAMA "played" BB at the three colleges he attended is probably correct. But pick up games at the IM and playing against prisoners during law school doesn't make him a college player.
Obviously, you have never played any BB that would allow you to observe that Obama is a player without any skills to compete at the college team level. OBAMA would have Wilson written all over his forehead with the shot he has if he played against any talent at all. You can fool some of the people all the time but anyone who knows BB would love to go one-on-one with him. Even at my age I would bet the farm on a game against him.
While I'm not a real big fan of the way that you stated what you did here, the underlying point of your post has some validity: it's a bit of a misconception that Obama played college basketball, or at the very least it's uncertain. There were articles in the LA Times and Washington Post in the run up to the election that claimed that he was the leading scorer for Occidental while he was there his freshman year, but subsequent interviews with players who were on the team that year stated that he was never on either the varsity or junior varsity teams while he was there. Their SID also confirmed that they have no record of him playing. The curious thing about that is that one of the coaches from that era remembered him playing. Just kind of a weird situation, all the way around.
What you wrote actually raises a highly interesting question about the nature of the "no politics" rule, namely, "Do completely idiotic conspiracy theories about the president qualify as political statements?" I am inclined to think otherwise, as they probably have even less of a place on this blog then politics do. They are useful, however, as indicators of whether a user is either completely insane or incredibly stupid. In your case, I'm inclined to believe the latter.
In other news, Michigan State announces that their commencement speaker will be George Hussein Onyango Obama, younger half-brother of the President.
I actually heard that they're in talks to bring God in because they want to one-up Michigan.
2010 will be change that we can believe in. It's the change we need.
EDIT: I'm talking about football...
Totally makes this 5th year of undergrad worth it.
I Hope he can help Change our recent athletic W-L records. I wonder if he will ask for a session with Barwis!
I voted for the guy, but good lord, was he dull. I just about killed myself it was so boring.
Ordinarily I'd be interested in seeing Obama, but I just saw on Fox that Sarah Palin is giving the commencement address at Ohio State the same day. I'm going down there to see how she fits her speech onto her hand.
Maybe Obama might bring the same teleprompter he used to give his speech to an elementary school.
We had David Halberstam. He was mind-numbingly boring. At least Bollinger was good.
I'm excited for them, even if security is going to be a nightmare, but the luxury boxes will be done enough to make for nice shots of the stadium.
Oh, Winter 2000, I had Elmore Leonard, and that would have been all well and good if he hadn't turned it into a 15 minute infomercial for the now defunct Contentville.
Security wasn't bad for the former President, it shouldn't be TOO much worse for the sitting President.
Im just glad I graduated last year. I would hate to have to listen to the komrad himself.
HAHAHAHAHA not really
Now shut up about politics. We are getting the sitting president of the United States to deliver a commencement address at the University of Michigan. Regardless of your political affiliation, you should be happy about this.
This is one of those times where politics shouldn't matter. The sitting president is coming to Ann Arbor to deliver the address. Whether or not you support his policies, think about it - he occupies the most important office in the country (if not the world), and WE got him to come here. That speaks pretty well of U-M.
When my brother graduated, in '99, UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan spoke. That was pretty cool, too. I don't know that Annan did all that great of a job as Secretary-General, but still . . . the top dog at the UN spoke for our graduating students. That's a big deal.
(And me? We got Jenny Granholm when I graduated. Meh.)
"This is one of those times where politics shouldn't matter. The sitting president is coming to Ann Arbor to deliver the address. I wonder if Jews felt the same way in 1933-34 about speeches given by Adolf Hitler.
Godwin's law, you lose douchebag.
Someone fetch me that price is right fail horn.
Because Obama is implying that he will commit mass genocide on University of Michigan students?
Get. A. Grip.
Are you drunk?
Alanis Morissette thinks it is ironic that a dude with "Ted Bundy" as part of his handle would be obsessed with mass murderers.
...is well chosen.
Let's see...you just compared the democratically elected president of the United States to Hitler...
Unless you believe that Obama plans to kill off the Republican caucus, you really need to shut up now.
Actually, even if you believe that Obama plans to kill off the Republican caucus, you still need to shut up now.
You are a terrible person. I hope you get banned.
He will use this opportunity to shamelessly campaign...
...for a college football playoff.
Hopefully he brings his teleprompter.
Edit: I have to add this link. Although I am not an Obama hater like the gentleman running that site this was too funny to pass up
We've got a Peace Corps anniversary coming up, so it would be a wonderful time (not to mention place!) for Obama to announce some kind of new or expanded service program.
Obama + Ann Arbor = an idealist liberal match made in heaven
too bad our economy is crap and Obama hasn't turned it around. Does this count as politics on mgoblog?
