Premium Seat Exchange

Submitted by ppToilet on

One of the mantras of the premium seating section has been "don't sell your seats". Basically, you don't want to irritate those who have spent a lot of money on their seats by having opposing fans spoil the experience.

Obviously, it is sometimes not possible to go to games as circumstances arise and the athletic department looks like they've come up with a creative solution to bypass StubHub:

We are building an online forum where all football premium seat holders can submit or donate their individual game tickets to the Premium Seat Exchange.  These tickets can only be purchased by other premium seat holders. Access to the exchange program is exclusive to premium seat holders to ensure that we protect your game day experience. Access is granted through your ticket account and the price of all tickets will be determined by the face value ticket price ($75 or $95 for the 2012 season). If your tickets are purchased, you will receive these funds.

Interesting idea and it seems that it would be a good idea to make friends with someone with premium seats so they can buy, at face value, club seats for you!

As a season ticket holder I love this idea, I'm always trying to buy my friends tickets from the ticket office before the season starts. This should help to get them the games they want.

Does this really help the problem?  People aren't bothered by EMU fans buying those games.  This program won't stop the ticket holder who is looking to make triple the face value on a big ticket game.

Right?  Or am I understanding this wrong?

My only concern is that you have to sell them at face value ($75-95).  My concern is that people won't sell them there because the price is so low.  I would prefer the option to sell for whatever we want.  I actually own two seats in the club, but would want to buy some additonal seats and I will pay more to get the opportunity.

It's only for premium ticket holders.  It's a way for premium seat holders to buy sell tickets to each other only.  We can't buy/sell on stub hub... they don't allow us to..

I own 2 club seats and will continue to seek out alternative markets to sell the games we cannot attend. Sure the annual donation per seat allows a great game day experience and we are excited to be a part of it. But to have the athletic department deny the ability to participate in a free market is a joke.

Why would I ever sell tickets at face when they pull 3-5 times that consistently?

Dave Brandon is a capitalist and so are his season ticket holders.

If you know in advance that you can't use the tickets (or don't want to go for some crazy reason), you can donate the tickets to a charitable organization. This allows you to deduct the ticket price and a portion of your seat donation fee from your taxes. Of course, you'd want to clear this through your accountant...

If you don't mind clarifying further, would the ticket price be a deductible donation? The athletic department includes the PSD as a portion of the ticket price - are you saying that you cannot include that portion? (To some degree, it doesn't matter as for individuals, 80% of the PSD is deductible.)

Thanks for suggesting it -- will look into it for some of the games...and also yell at my CPA sister (also a season ticket holder) for not suggesting this already.

Not sure you HAVE to participate in this system...I think its designed to help keep UM tickets in the hands of the university's fans...sell away on stubhub if its about the money, chief.

That's the locking us out of the free market part that is so frustrating. Try to find club seats on stubhub...they can't sell them per their agreement with UM.

You have to sell on other sites, which don't get as many eyes as stubhub and therefore not nearly as efficient of a market.

As a premium ticket holder of 4 seats, my PSD alone is $2000 per year. I look at that as part of the value of the ticket, and thus, usually try to get closer to $125 for each ticket I sell, but i always sell to a michigan fan Since I go to most games, it's not an issue, but there are many seats around me that have visiting team fans in them every game. In fact, many haven't been used by Michigan fans ever! This was particularly an issue at UTL last year, as I had to have some folks removed from the stadium and that's the issue with selling them blindly to the highest bidder on stubhub. On the flip side, there probably are many loyal fans who would donate their tickets as the cost is not an issue for them. I'm not one of those folks, but they do exist.

A once in a lifetime opportunity to purchase seats next to close friends, all michigan alums. Problem is we all live elsewhere (TX, KY, IL) and get to 2-3 games per year. The cost of travel + the PSD amount adds up quickly.

We are making an investment in our future here and will have these seats forever, but until the day when I can give the tickets away and not use the market value to cover costs -- will continue on the current path.

You'd be shocked at the number of opposing fans parking in the numbered suite parking in the Blue Lot, different people every game.  Makes you wonder just how in tune the folks sitting up there reallly are.

I like this idea, particularly for the "lesser games". It's hard to get people to pony up the face value of the tickets, no less the PSD. But I suspect other premium seat holders who can access this service would willingly pay face if they're looking for additional tickets.

I'd rather use this service for certain games rather than Craigslist.

Business opportunity for Stub Hub. Do the same thing, but for schools' respective alumni clubs. There would have to be a way to verify relatively easily.

I had premium tickets (West side chair back) last year. It was the quickest way for me to get season tickets. I had been on the waiting list for 3-4 years and I had also purchased the All In package two years in a row. I live in Ohio and I can only make it to 3 or 4 games a year. Stubhub blocked the WSCB seats from being sold on their website so I was out of luck. Between the Donation and the Ticket cost I shelled out a lot of money for those seats. I have no problem with the cost however I do have a problem with UofM not wanting me to sell the tickets to anyone. I did sell my Nebraska seats for a little profit but that's not why I was in it. I bought them to attend the games. I gave games away to friends who are Michigan Fans, and I ate a few as well.

I also did not care for the section I was sitting in. I had numerous people tell me durring the OSU game that I needed to sit down. The whole stadium was standing. I stood until I had an usher tell me I needed to sit. The lady behind me told me that she paid A Lot of money for her tickets, and that her daughter was in the band. She was older (Maybe in her 60's) but not old enough that she couldn't stand. I ended up leaving my seats to go stand by the indoor seats entrance where we could be as loud as we wanted to be,

I did not re-purchase those tickets this year. I will only be able to attend 1-2 games this year with my work travel schedule. I will buy them on Stub Hub or scalp them at the game. One day when my kids are older I might look into the season tickets again but not now!

my folks often obtain tickets for friends of mine or theirs who want to attend individual games from other season ticket holders, and nobody ever pays anything other than face. so it's nice to have a way to do this that isn't dependent on having a friend with extra tickets. they should extend the idea, though, so that there's also an exchange to which all season ticket holders have access.
