Possible perfect storm to aid M: Can Cook play / can MSU stop Hackenberg?

Submitted by tedheadfred on

Do we have a possible perfect storm coming up to get that needed help?  Let's look at a few item for MSU/PSU:

PSU O vs MSU D:

Last night the wind may have protected the MSU secondary from being exposed.  PSU's most successful play and biggest talent is at QB and had good receivers.  Can PSU throw on MSU and get a lead?  (insert comment on the strength of the MSU D line here)

MSU O vs. PSU D:

MSU isn't a rushing juggernaut.  Cook may still be out.  Can MSU generate offense against a stout PSU defense?  PSU D can generate turnovers.

No spread yet.  It's gonna be exciting!

Hackenberg truly hasn't had a masterful performance yet. He wants a performance under his belt to dazzle the scouts. Plus Rudock didn't have a bad day vs MSU's pass D and Hackenberg makes more NFL type throws then Rudock does and did especially at that point in the season. Yes there's a chance

MSU without Cook put up 17 on OSU and OSU has a good defense. So lets say that MSU doesn't have cook and they put up 17 or 20 again, does Penn State score more than that? I guess they did put up 16 (3 redzone trips) on our D, and MSU's secondry is not as good as ours, but MSU's D-line might get to Hackenberg in 1 second. Also add the fact that James Franklin is coaching PSU.

That's kinda the same thing I was saying in a thread yesterday. We beat PSU through the air, but their run defense was very good. We couldn't do much of anything on the ground. I'm sure PSU will watch the OSU/MSU game film and concentrate on stopping the run even more. If Cook doesn't play, PSU may have a chance. I think MSU only passed the ball four times in 2nd half.

Why don't we just focus on the fact that in year one under HARBAUGH!! the team has the potential to go 10-2. We need to focus on that because Sparty gonna beat PSU Saturday. Cook will play, PSU's Oline is trash and Franklin certainly won't scheme to account for his team's shortcomings. I'm just thrilled that I can watch games again knowing the team is being coached well and that the future has hope, lots of hope..

see how Cook will be ready to play effectively against PSU.

He might be able to play, but he will not be nearly as effective as before the injury.  No zip on the ball.  Possibly less accurate too.

In addition, if he gets sacked he could harm the shoulder more.  That is too risky.  I think MSU will have to go with the QB tandem they used yesterday.

But not unreasonable either. I wouldn't be surprised if Penn State can play a competitive game with MSU. If PSU can buy time for Hackenberg, anything is possible. MSU may have a slight letdown after that last game. Penn State's defense is capable of shutting down MSU's offense.

The PSU D line needs to play a great game, and so do their backers. But if PSU gets like a quick passing game going to the outside to get rid of the surplus of blitzes that are coming their way, then they take advantage deep late in the game, I think they have a chance because I think MSU might come out a bit flat. And MSU has played up or down to their opponents all year, so yes there is a chance

Really, if two days ago you thought that MSU would face Penn State without Cook, what would you say? I'd say Penn State had a chance. The only thing that happened since then is Ohio State choked hard.

I honestly think half of the big ten would have beaten msu last night without cook.

The stubbornness out of osu was something to behold...

I have no idea why anyone is high on Hack....he was awful yesterday, he holds the ball forever. Almost like he has a disease on throwing the ball away. Also don't think PSU will get help from refs like they did yesterday.

I never imagined a scenario where I'd want Penn State to win at anything, yet here we are. I want PSU to beat litlle brother next saturday. Yesterdays game was a perfect matchup for sparty, a team that does nothing but run. Next week the matchup swings in the opposite direction. It could be interesting.

The people that are saying that STAEE is going to crush PSU.  I agree they will most likely win, but other than a 20pt win over Western, who have they beaten up?  Anyone that says Indiana is just looking at the final score and didn't watch that game.

I hope your wording isn't a sign... Dantonio seems to be able to call a perfect storm at will. It'll be a hurricane when they're on D and a sunny day when on O.

I think it'll be close, but to be honest getting Darian Hicks back was so big for this defense. We move Cox back to safety, and that has made Montae a lot more comfortable back there. Guessing 24-10. We're a lot healthier now, and I think it's showing.

Honestly, if you had to pick a bad team to beat MSU (especially without Cook), it would be Penn State. They have an excellent defensive line and should be able to put pressure on an inexperienced QB.

On offense, Hackenburg and co. aren't good, but the one thing he does do well is throw a nice deep ball. If he can make just enough plays, Penn State's defense might be good enough to hold down a Cook-less MSU offense.

Of course if Cook plays, its all out the window and probably ends up 28-7 or something. Man, if there was ever a game you wish could be moved to Happy Valley at night....

A lot of people have been on here the last two days talking about how bad PSU is and acting like we straight blew them out. If it wasn't for the PSU muffed punt, that game probably would've been another nail bitter with us all shaking in our boots. Our D line did eventually seal the game, but PSU didn't look as terrible as some have been stating. If Cook doesn't play, I just find it hard to believe PSU will lose to an one dimensional MSU running offense, especially with time to prepare for it. Maybe if it's a 10-6 game with MSU's defense basically winning it.

Call me nuts but a combination of: A.) Hack's probable last game B.) Franklin needing to show up C.) MSU with OSU win hang over D.) Psu always being good for one big win a year Might, just MIGHT amount to much glee in A2 once we stomp the Bucks.

They're saying 20%. Grabbing five possible scenarios out of the air, PSU wins in one of them, MSU in four. Not great, but there are definitely storms that could make it happen.

I'm not getting my hopes up, but can you imagine how complete bat shit crazy the Big House would go if PSU pulled off the upset, and Michigan is in the midst of putting the clamps down on a potential game-winning drive for OSU?

Would be absolute bedlam and chaos. The crowd would come alive in a way we may never have heard before.
