Possible alternate sites for B1G champions that don't qualify for playoff: Fiesta, Cotton, Chick Fil A

Colleague Brett McMurphy reports that the league commissioners have agreed that in years where the Rose Bowl is a national semifinal and the Big Ten champion doesn't qualify for the top four, it would head to one of the three "host" bowls. There had been some talk of the Big Ten or SEC champion automatically going to the Orange Bowl, a contract bowl, in years it cannot play in its traditional game (Rose: Big Ten, Sugar: SEC).

But sources tell McMurphy the champions will head to one of the host bowls. The leading candidates are Fiesta, Cotton and Chick-fil-A.

I remember some comments from Delany during the playoff discussion mentioning that the Big Ten bowl tie ins are too Florida heavy and that he was looking into moving some of those to NYC and the West Coast.  Probably won't happen for the top bowls though.

You have a very vague question. Are you suggesting that the Rose Bowl is on the West Coast? Sure, that's true. But of the 10 or so bowls Big Ten teams can potentially play in, one is on the West Coast and more than half of them are in the Southeast where the Big Ten has few alumni/fans.

I just don't see why our conference has a bowl in Tampa, Orlando, Jacksonville and other Southeast cities but it's Rose Bowl or bust for an area that probably has 10 times as many fans.

Delany likes to complain about our bowls not really being that neutral, but schedules most of them where none of our alumni lives.

I agree that most of the Big Ten alumni is based in the Midwest and NE. If the Big Ten had only one bowl, then Florida would be the best. But why have three bowls in Florida and none in California? Fans travel a lot for the big bowls, but are less likely to drop a grand or more per person between tickets, travel and lodging for the smaller bowls. So when teams are playing in Florida for the 5th time in 7 years, the won't be a ton of fans showing up, and this happens a lot. However, if you spread them out a little more, and instead of that Gator Bowl or Outback Bowl, the Big Ten played a bowl in CA somewhere, I bet the attendance would be drastically improved.

It's not that much harder for a Midwestern or NE fan to get to LA versus Tampa. However, it's a ton easier for those Big Ten fans in CA who only get a close bowl game when their team makes the Rose Bowl.

Why should different big ten teams look at it differently? The fan base for all teams is centered around the upper midwest and the bowls are mainly in the south with the rose bowl out west.

You stated you wanted a big ten bowl on the west coast because (I'm assuming) you don't want to travel. However, most of the fan base travels to any bowl, no matter if it is in the south or in the west.

The Chick-fil-A bowl is part of the major six-bowl rotation now. It will be on that top tier. It obviously doesn't have the same tradition/cachet as the other major bowls at this point (and will never match the Rose Bowl), but the Fiesta Bowl was a nothing game 30 years ago -- after a few years of the playoffs, nobody will really remember or care that it didn't used to be a significant game.

And outside of general entertainment quality of the city, if the Big Ten champ isn't going to Pasadena, I don't see much difference between going to Miami or Arlington or Atlanta or wherever.

Those who stay will be champions.

ATL (and Delta's presence in DTW/LGA/MSP/CVG as hubs/minihubs) is probably the most accessible for B1G fans in the B1G footprint.

Much easier to get direct flights to ATL (and at better hours) than the God-forsaken redeyes out to LAX.

Agree that the LA area is a much better place than Atlanta, but I can do a 24 whirlwind for a Michigan bowl on the East Coast, and still goto work the next day.

The irritating thing about the Chick Fil A Bowl is the name.

It's a generic corporate name, not the Peach Bowl anymore.  And now after everything that the corporate sponsor did this year, there's certainly some negative connotations to the name on top of its corporateness.

I agree, Atlanta isn't exactly a New Year's "destination". Nice town and all, but it'd be a lot closer to the experience of the Pizza Bowl at Ford Field than the Rose Bowl in sunny CA.

The playoff system isn't going to be very kind to what remains of college football tradition. Whether or not that's a good or bad thing is up to the individual. I'm not happy about it.

If the Peach Bowl is going to be one of the big boys, it needs to be the Peach Bowl, presented by Chik-a-fil or something like that.  Like how the Rose Bowl kind of hides the sponsorship.  Seriousily just a little class, that is all I ask.

I have absolutely no problem with the Rose Bowl being sponsored in its current incarnation. It doesn't distract from the name, yet you think of Citi when you think of the Rose Bowl. When I was a kid, I always thought well of Citi because it presented me the Rose Bowl. What could be better than that?

Would it hurt to have a B1G bowl besides the Rose Bowl in San Diego or the Bay Area? Both cities are a great place to spend New Years and usually have good weather that time of year. Also the Rose Bowl could host a second bowl like the Fiesta does. I'm still blown away by the number of Big Ten alumni that live out here.

I completely agree with this. Rose Bowl. LA Coliseum, Oakland Coliseum, Candlestick, Qualcomm, any of those could do a bowl (or another one) and would be very attractive to Big Ten teams, I would think. There are tons of Big Ten fans out here, and it's tough for us to get to any non-Rose Bowl bowl game. But if there was a bowl anywhere from SF to SD, the local fans would show up in droves, plus all the non-CA fans who want a good excuse to come to CA in the winter time.

If I may supplement the discussion a little, Dennis Dodd provides some insight into the structure of the overall agreement here - (LINK)

Most notably for the Big Ten:

"The playoff will move forward with its own subset of powers. The SEC and Big Ten will each have two guaranteed spots while the Pac-12 and Big 12 have one."

If that's the case, it seems like it would be the case that, if the Big Ten is not in the Rose Bowl, then it may not be in any playoff bowl west of the Rockies. That being said, WolvinLA2 is correct  in that virtually all of the Big Ten schools have very sizeable alumni/alumnae bases on the West Coast and many of the fanbases do tend to travel well.

One of the more interesting aspects of the new structure involves the "Group Of Five", or the 60 or so non-BCS Division I schools who could potentially earn a spot in one of the bowls. They plan to take the highest ranked team from this group to one of the so-called contract bowls. If the playoffs started tomorrow, that would be Louisville playing someone in  some bowl - no specifics as to which bowl would host them. If we find ourselves consistently in these bowls moving forward, I simply find it intriguing how some of the potential opponents will be decided.
