If a quarterback was to fall to the ground and receive the snap on his knees, he would be down. So, in that last play, the place holder has his knee on the ground when he receives the ball, then stands up to pass it. Why isn't he considered down since his knee was down when he received the ball?
September 19th, 2010 at 12:01 AM ^
The holder on a field goal try or extra point try are not considered 'down' when they have their knee on the ground as they receive the snap...they are allowed to get up with the ball.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:01 AM ^
Because there would never be an extra point or FG attempt because the play would be over as soon as the holder caught the ball with his knee on the ground.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:02 AM ^
It's a special exception for field goals. When the team is lined up for a field goal, the holder is not considered down.
Without that rule, it would always be completely obvious when a fake field goal was going to happen.

We're going to have to bring out A game or else we're fucked.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:16 AM ^
Because they needed a fake field goal in overtime to beat a team we beat a week ago?
September 19th, 2010 at 12:18 AM ^
That's one of the dumbest things I've ever heard.
September 18th, 2010 at 11:57 PM ^
Sparty looked somewhat solid, given what I just saw from our D against the UMASS offense, does make me a bit scurred for that game
September 18th, 2010 at 11:57 PM ^
Man.......the Domers are useless.
September 18th, 2010 at 11:57 PM ^
Just saw the replay. TOTALLY delay of game. No dispute. Can't wait for the domers to marinate on that one.
September 18th, 2010 at 11:58 PM ^
It was a delay of game, but props to having the stones to call that thing.
September 18th, 2010 at 11:58 PM ^
to predict that MSU-ND will get the opening on Sportscenter tomorrow morning.
September 18th, 2010 at 11:58 PM ^
Unfortunate tie-up with the two ND defenders at the line. Directly resulted in that Sparty being wide open. Aww, hamburgers.
September 18th, 2010 at 11:58 PM ^
The play clock on the scoreboard said 0 right before the snap (Tivo :)...Sparty cheats again!
September 18th, 2010 at 11:59 PM ^
expired in the stadium too! missed call big time. great game though

September 19th, 2010 at 12:00 AM ^
and sparty also scored a touchdown where the reciever stepped out (not forced) and came back in and scored.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:00 AM ^
Delay of game...dantonio looks like the grinch
September 19th, 2010 at 12:21 AM ^
He does. He really does.

September 19th, 2010 at 12:00 AM ^
I'd like to see Dantonio try that on Michigans stellar defense......okay i take that back.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:01 AM ^
ND is number two in all time wining percentage, this will help us keep the distance. Now I just hope we SMASH Sparty. Also do you think that was a dig by calling that play "liitle giant"? Oh and I hope RichRod/Denard wipe that cocky smile off Dantonio's face.
September 19th, 2010 at 10:01 AM ^
Texas pass them, or was that just in total # of wins?
September 19th, 2010 at 12:02 AM ^
was hoping ND would win. Also sucks that we won't hear from DameFan1 for a while either.
September 19th, 2010 at 10:58 AM ^
to hang his backwards hat on, we just might.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:02 AM ^
As much as I hate Dantonio (more than Kelly in that race to the bottom), it was a well designed and executed fake. Howvever, was it really a "gutsy" call? I mean the kicker was faciing a 46 yarder, which would have been his career long. Sparty did not need a touchdown but only a first down, so while I think it was no doubt a great call, I would not say it was "gutsy."

September 19th, 2010 at 10:03 AM ^
Yeah, they needed a first down, but did they have time to get a first down?
Answer: No.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:02 AM ^
It's times like these that I miss The Blue-Gray Sky and its insane commentors.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:18 AM ^
Yes! I loved skimming through the BGS comments after losses. It was so much better than reading NDNation. I always feel like I need a shower if I visit that site.
That is what kept me alive through the 2008 season. When we lost I was able to come back from the brink by laughing at the Notre Dame insanity.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:02 AM ^
ya they missed the call...but how is that not a pick play or pass interference? #24 just barreled over 2 guys trying to turn and run with the TE...someone explain that?
September 19th, 2010 at 12:02 AM ^
I just LOVE watching ND lose in heartbreaking style. But as that game went on, I went back and forth over who to root for. For a while, I was actually rooting for ND. Sparty's schedule is so easy this year, they need some losses.
Just like last week, Kelly made some stupid play calls. Going for it on 4th and 2 from your own 40 with 3 minutes left in the game? And yes, that fake field goal took major guts. But it was a 46 yard attempt. ND should have been prepared for a possible fake.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:14 AM ^
September 19th, 2010 at 12:30 AM ^
Well, it wouldn't be pass interference because the ball was not thrown yet. Did he actually pull them down? Then it could be a holding call.
If it was just running over them and causing everyone to fall down, I'm not sure what penalty that would be.
September 19th, 2010 at 9:24 AM ^
called Offensive Pass Interference
September 19th, 2010 at 3:05 PM ^
But the ball wasn't thrown yet, so is it really pass interference?
When DBs are playing press coverage the receivers often have to fight to get off the line. If it's offensive pass interference to make contact with a defender at any time, then playing press coverage would be unstoppable.

Man. Helluva game
September 19th, 2010 at 12:04 AM ^
That wasn't that ballsy. It was creative as hell and a great call. But when you think about it, it was the ideal situation for it.
No one second guesses it if it fails, even though he has a pretty good field goal kicker.
He did that really cool hook and ladder against Iowa last year that I liked as well. Who would think that Danner is such a dangerous swashbuckler?
I liked how just to ease all of our fearful beating hearts, he reverted back to character and made his usual ass out of himself with the reporter. Whew. I was worried there for a second. Don't do that to me Mark.
See you in Ann Arbor Sparty.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:09 AM ^

Are you kidding? Everyone second-guesses that call if it fails, because he has a pretty good field goal kicker. That call was the definition of ballsy.

That's the ABC clock and we don't have tenths of a second there anyway. No need bitching about that now - game is over and they won and that was a ballsy but brilliant call by Dumbtonio. I hate the bastard, but gotta tip my hat to him on that one.
I am looking foward to an undefeated matchup of MSU and Michigan. That will be epic if it happens.
Some Michigan haters are pointing at the U-Mass game and laughing. But I look at it this way - Michigan was unprepared today and they did not respect their opponent, but this scared the shit out of them - which is good. They will NOT take Bowling Green or Indiana lightly now and that is a good thing. I was down on the field at the end of the game as the team went over to the student section. They were not a happy bunch - and as a fan that made me happy because they shouldn't have been.
Plus give U-Mass credit - they came to play and did not get intimidated - hats off to them and their fans who were absolutely great to talk to and especially to their band for just showing up, but they were really good too.

Thanks for this very well written response. I, for one, appreciate it. Plus, excellent sign off.

Far upper right and upper left. They are both :00. It is not a creation of ABC.
Again, I'd be pissed if I were Brian Kelly. Dantonio called that play for a reason. It was too long an attmept for an inexperienced kicker. ND should have been looking for that in OT.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:16 AM ^
...probably had to make the call without the benefit of this screenshot.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:18 AM ^
...there was a discrepancy between ESPN's clock and that in the stadium.
September 19th, 2010 at 12:22 AM ^
There's still an 01 on the field playclock, upper right hand of the score board, in this shot at least.
