Poor Damn Maryland (QB Injury?)

Submitted by LKLIII on
I didn't watch the game, but I'm hearing social media rumors that the Maryland "starting" QB was injured in yesterday's loss to Rutgers. IIRC, the "starting" QB is the last scholarship QB on their roster. The other options are PWOs or converted players from other positions who used to play QB on high school, as the top 2 guys were already knocked out due to season ending injuries. Is there anybody in the Baltimore area that can shed light on this? And if true, do we know the extent of the injury & whether or not they'll play on Saturday when we face them? Or was it just a minor ding and he'll play next week? Maryland isn't very good to begin with (see: "loss to Rutgers" section above). I shudder to think what our D Line will do to the dude who steps in as the 4th string QB with one week of practice at the position. EDIT: Apoligies for the bad formatting. I'm on my phone and for some reason the paragraphs I'm making aren't showing up.

Maybe this means Maryland will switch to the triple option attack ahead of PSU and MSU, which will take them completely by surprise and improve UM's chances of winning the B1G from 1 in a million to 1 in a (million - x) where x is the amount of alcohol it takes for all of us to hallucinate this outcome.

Not sure about future limitations, but Bortenschlager did leave the game with an injury and Maryland finished with their 5th string walk-on QB. The game next week may not be very fair. Hopefully we can get Peters some more throws and get the starters out early.

Game plan should focus more on Peters and the passing game.  Maryland ranks 99th in total defense, 102 in passing defense, and their rush defense is 76.

Edit:

And for people complaining about the passing strategy last night, Minnesota has the 11th ranked passing defense in the country.

Combine that with the poor weather, and you get Higdon and Evans eating.

Exactly! I think we will see much more passing from peters in the Maryland game bc the coaching staff knows that we must throw the ball with consistent success @ Wisconsin and vs osu to get wins in those contests. Peters is capable, all it takes to pull the upset is confidence and.belief in one another. Still plenty of football left to be played.

I actually thought the recent unis with yellow helmets and yellow jerseys looked very clean and classic - much more befitting to the B1G.  They should stick with those.

Unis aside, a closer look at the depth chart reveals that Michigan itself will be starting their...gasp... third string QB.

"Borten" is lace or braids. "Schlager" is a common word having several translations into English depending on context. It could be "hitter" or "beater," but here it's probably more like "setter" or "pounder." "Braid" or "Lace" setter apparently describes some occupation, probably dating from the seventeenth or even sixteenth century.  At that time as in England many German family names followed the occupation of the family patriarch. So names such as "Schmidt" (Smith) and "Zimmermann" (carpenter) are common German names.

So "Bortenschlager" would be something like "lacesetter," maybe in some form of textile manufacture, but that's just a guess.

After just reading some posts on their 247 forum, it seems like most Maryland fans disagree. They’re are many threads calling for him to be fired, which is a bit absurd. They’ve lost SEVERAL QBs this season. It’s hard enough losing your starter alone, but they’re even beyond that. Tough season for Durkin, really hope he can establish a solid program.

The same explanation doesn't necessarily apply to superficially similar cases.

The OP was simply suggesting that the loss to OSU in 2015 is not necessarily an indictment of Durkin's coaching abilities.  Should we blame Don Brown for our recent game against PSU?  I know there might be reasons to think Durkin had his attention divided at the end of 2015, but we don't know that this was the primary reason we were beaten so badly by OSU, which is all the OP's remarks need suggest.  Personally, I don't feel strongly about Durkin one way or another.

ND was pretty bad defensively under Van Gorder though, so that's not that surprising.

IIRC, OSU rushed for either their most or second-most yards of the season against us.  My recollection of that game is that we pretty much played the whole way in our base D, not changing much up even as Elliott was gashing us, and died by a thousand cuts.

He interviewed for the Maryland job the week of the Game and was announced as their coach shortly afterward.

In the meantime, while he was still employed by us as defensive coordinator, he seems to have totally disregarded the effective MSU defense gameplan from a week earlier (in which they made ample use of their safeties against the run) and made sure to keep a high safety all game long to protect against JT Barrett's awesome passing . . . while OSU ran for a season-high against us.

Which was all the more reason to not play vanilla.  We needed safety help against the run but prioritized pass defense more, for some reason.  We needed to force them to throw and take our chances in single coverage.  Maybe they would have beaten us over the top, but the alternative (letting them run it 50 times) sure didn't work.
