Poll: How much did this week change your opinions on our leaders?

Submitted by gbdub on

The biggest debate on the board these days seems to be between the pitchfork posse and the "you wouldn't care if we were winning" brigade. Now that we've had a couple days to process things, I thought I'd propose a poll to inject some data into the discussion. What would you do to Hoke and Brandon if we were a winning team? Please try to be honest. I'll keep things open until Rutgers kickoff, then try to whip up a diary with the results.

EDIT: Changed the thread title to be a bit less inflammatory. Basically I'm just trying to get a gauge on how much this particular incident moved the needle for everyone, since we're arguing back and forth and no one's gotten any numbers yet.

If we were 5-0 we wouldn t be dealing with and seeing all of this crap going on. On the field complete lack of execution, coaching blunders every game, buy a coke get a ticket. The problem is coaching and not developing. That falls on the coach and the AD. Its not a witch hunt it reality

We'd be a hell of a lot better than right now.

Also, Shane wouldn't have started a game, so he wouldn't have been concussed, and Hoke wouldn't have left him in there.  SI would be writing about something else, all the coverage on ESPN would be positive, the fanbase would be grumbling about ticket prices but otherwise happy.

Also, I'd sworn 1,400 times less in front of my 10-month old daughter and been called a pretentious asshole and a hypocrite 12 times less.

It would be a wonderland.

If we were 5-0 and in the playoff hunt, the PR impact would be much less, maybe not even exist. Possible this even gets successfully swept under the rug. Here's the thing though (in addition to hypotheticals don't matter, just ask Hoke): that's an indictment on the culture of winning and the tendency for people to subvert their morals for wins, to make them feel better about their own insecure lives. That's another discussion for another day and is an endless debate. But if it takes losing to bring awareness to do the right thing for health and safety, then I, for one, am glad we are.

This is an intellectually-dishonest hypothetical. If we were 5-0, Shane Morris wouldn't have started a game. This is what some people don't get about Hoke, it's compounding problems. Morris played BECAUSE of the team's record. Hoke made bad decisions leading to us being 2-2 going into Minnesota. Then he made a bad decision to start an immobile, statuesque QB behind a terrible o-line for whatever reason. Then he made the bad decision to keep him in despite even further reduced mobility leading to the headshot. Then he made the bad decision to keep him in there despite that.

Hoke defenders want to take a very myopic view and defend one element of this thing when there's actually about 10 elements at play. Where we want this team to be isn't on the otherside of some door; there's 10 doors between us and there at this point. Its metaphoric turtles the whole way down.

In the interim what I propose is this, the international sign of distress is to fly your flag upside down. We are definitely a program in distress. So I ask that all M supporters start flying their M flag, logo, license plates etc. upside down in visual protest until circumstances are resovled.

Jeter's ability to make these very hot, younger, female celebrities flock to him is unparalleled. For some reason completely lacking in logic, this makes me think he'd be a good AD.
If I had his kind of money and reputation, there is no question whatsoever I'd at least attempt to do the exact same. I mean, damn.

David Brandon is the person who really runs the team.  This is all his fault.  Hoke is becoming overwhelmed because of the pressure and the fact that he is taking the heat for Brandon's decisions.  He made a mistake on Saturday that is going to be enough to get him fired, but it's become obvious that firing coaches and benching QB's isn't the answer in Ann Arbor.

Not that it matters, but here's my 2 cents. Hoke's pressers are just painful to watch. It's shocking how he used to seem so in control in front of the media, and now he's just lost. Brandon's response was typically tone-deaf, 2 days too late, and overly lawyered up. I was also a little disappointed with the time it took Schlissel to make a statement, but I really liked what he had to say.

As far as the "this wouldn't be a big deal if we were winning" argument, well no shit. But if we were winning, we wouldn't be seeing the poor coaching and idiotic mistakes we've seen all year. Do winning teams send out 10 guys to cover punts? Do they punt down 16 with 5 minutes to go? Do they start kids at the most important position on the field who are obviously not ready for prime time? No, they don't. This is just one more fuckup in a season that's been filled with them, and people are pissed off and ready for a change. It's unimaginable that this team, with this coaching staff, could be 5-0, so why even hypothesize how people would react if that was the case?

As a student, it's made me more furious that the Athletic Department, Regents, and President refuse to acknowledge us.  If they wanted to calm things down, they would be meeting with the leaders of the movement and listening to our concerns.  But they clearly don't care about what we have to say- and that's fine, but things are going to get worse.  I can tell you that people are starting to get more organized here and there's a core group of leaders that are coming together

To answer the OP's question, the past few days haven't changed my opinion, just reinforced it.

I've always felt that Brandon was an arrogant jackass whose only interest was himself and reinforcing his own opinions.

I felt that Hoke was a likable schlemiel in over his head.

And I felt that a new university president was unlikely to move swiftly to rectify a situation like this. However, I'm glad that the Shane Event galvanized the university community and that a spotlight was put on Brandon.

He needed to know how unpopular his moves are outside Fort Schembechler, and what the community thinks of his nonsense.

Not that any of this will affect him if he's not terminated. But at least he knows, and has to live with the fact that he is so widely detested.

How much did this week change your opinions on our leaders?

Very little.

I already thought that Brandon was an arrogant douche who cares first and foremost about his ego and whose vision of what Michigan football should be like is very very different from mine.  I've wanted him gone for ages.

As for Hoke, after getting worse as a team every year since 2011 and especially after the ND and Utah debacles this year, my opinion was already that he's a nice guy but an utterly incompetent head coach.  That opinion hasn't changed, either.

I am in the minority who's willing to admit that the Shane Morris incident has gotten way more play in the media because Michigan football is a raging dumpster fire right now.

Regardless, Brandon should be gone ASAP and Hoke should be gone at the end of the season.

But no traction if we were clobbering MN 63-10, Gardner was out after an excellent first half and Bellomy could not find his helmet! It would already be a none story and every one would be wondering are we going to blow out Rutgers on the road by 30 or 40 points! We will be looking at 5-0 with no thought about What Hoke did!

But mostly it was the getting owned by Minnesota bit that did the changing.

Now if you asked me how the incident changed my views of the press and the major contributors to this blog...If you all are on fire, you had better hope I've had a lot of diet coke.  I mean a lot.

As of writing this 54% of respondents think are okay with not fireing Hoke if he loses only 2 more games (Probably Ohio State and Michigan State).  52% want Brandon fired right now.

Is there any precident for this much anomisity toward the AD?!?
