Poggi Deciding Soon
Let's hope Poggi is the first part of a 1-2 Saban-losing punch that ends on September 1.
I also enjoy watching Michigan win occasionally.
What are our chances, Ace?
Has he ever visited?
It's been a while, but yes... at least once. Visited Alabama most recently.
He's definitley visited. More than once I believe. Magnus or someone else may be able to better fill you in.
He has visited twice.
He visited for Purdue last year and he visited in mid-March this year.
I can't remember if I've seen him on TTB or not.
He has been on campus three times, once for a game (Purdue). Latest visit was in March
The next 30 days = June
Sam Webb predicts multiple good things will happen in Michigan recruiting in June.
1+1 = Hurst and Poggi.
Oh yeah... Hurst + Poggi + Treadwell + Green.... think REALLY big
I think Treadwell will decide at the end of the summer. ...but I guess HS kids can change their minds quite easily, so we'll see!
Someone needs to put "MGoLaw" in this PIC for us:
Will you prosecute anyone who does not buckle properly?
Good stuff. +10,000 for the weekend as long as you grant me a license to repost this at will.
If he adds some Maize in there too?
I actually drafted one up at the same time I made the first one.
And of course I'm fine with these being used whenever you want.
I hope the MGoColor Police don't get after you for your rendering of maize!
ZOMG, we are not Oregon.
+ another 10,000 anyway. Good suggestion, M-W.
But far be it from me to critique more hard work and creativity than I was willing to put in.
I tried to match it by using the color picker to match the color of the font on the site. It looks like the color picker failed me. Oh well, changing the color is as simple as using the paint bucket tool.
Wonderful! Great Job!! Even got rid of that sickly looking green. /s
How many more DL were we expected to take?
The number I've heard most is 4, including Taco.
Yeah, but every program does that to a certain extent. ND and OSU didn't offer Bolden last year, even though both teams later took lower rated LBs. Maybe the staff felt Schutt was redundant with Pipkins, and wanted a true 3-tech guy instead.
The Lucien thing makes me crazy (but not in the way it makes everyone else, it seems, crazy). Everyone got so excited about him because he had four stars from Rivals and he liked us, then he though Hoke was crazy for turning him away. HE HAD NO OTHER MAJOR OFFERS. Hoke said no to Lucien because he wasn't good enough. Same reason the big West Coast teams passed on him.
He didn't have a ton of major offers, but Cal, UCLA, Nebraska, Miami, ASU, Texas A&M and Colorado are hardly nobody.
But who on there is elite? He is from LA, but no USC, Washington, Oregon or Stanford, the top recruiters on the west coast. No Texas or Oklahoma, no ND, none of the major midwest or SEC schools.
There are TONS of kids who have offers from those schools but not from Michigan - Lucien is hardly the first. I'm not saying those offers are from nobody, but everyone makes Lucien out to be this can't miss prospect. Well, the good half of the Pac-12 felt fine passing on him, so why is MICHIGAN getting worked up over it?
Why is Michigan getting worked up over it? Because he wanted to come to Michigan. And we need receivers, which is why we're taking 3 or 4 of them this year. And regardless of what other people thought about offering him, he is reportedly in line to start for UCLA in 2012 as a redshirt freshman. Not that UCLA is a great team or has a boatload of other elite guys at wide receiver, but he could turn out to be a pretty darn good receiver...and Michigan has 5'8" Jeremy Gallon starting at split end.
And there are plenty of kids offered by those schools who are offered by Michigan. If Michigan restricted itself to offering only those players who are sought after by "elite" programs, we'd hardly have enough players to field a team of starters right now. If that.
I know we have lost some of the more recent battles to other schools but honestly I am just glad we are in them. The kids are thinking about Michigan seriously, and it is a good thing. You can't win them all, but we are battling for them.
Ill be just as surprised if Poggi picks us as i would if Hurst did not pick us, if that makes any sense.
If not, this is my feeling.....
80% Hurst
20% Poggi
Show me whatcha got, whatcha got, Poggi.
Oh please, oh please, oh please. Not that this class isn't already insane, but this would fill one of our few remaining needs with, maybe, the top guy on the coaches board.
Hurst will be a nose tackle and Poggi will be a strongside defensive end/3 tech. They have nothing to do with one another. And Poggi has visited and loved it.
All of the recent reports say Hurst is being recruited as a 3-tech, like Poggi.
Not that those are set in stone, but what has been reported so far is that Hurst is also a 3-tech, not a NT. This is not super surprising considering he's athletic and un-huge.
I remember an interview with Hurst wherein he said that Mattison told him he was being recruited primarily as a 3 Tech, BUT that he would likely see time at NT as well spelling Pipkins. Hurst is already 300 lbs. so plenty big enough to play NT and his quickness will be an asset there a la Will Carr, Mike Martin and the like. Really happy if he goes BLUE.
That's my impression also, that they view Hurst as a 3-tech/1-tech and Poggi as a 3-tech/5-tech.
Mattison likes to roll his DL during games, so we need 8-10 solid players who can contribute. These two guys would really help.
Hurst was quoted as being told by the coaches that he's being recruited as a 3-tech and he mentioned that it was because PeeWee would be playing NT. He could play NT after PeeWee leaves. Poggi is expected bo be a 3-tech, 5-tech. It appears they would take both and probably still go after a top SDE.
lets try to keep the expectation lid down on this one. After Garnett and Levenberry I tend to be more cautious about when people think we have the best chance. Just hurts my heart too much
always good advice. Keeps the rats out, too.
I know we have a great class already, but it seems we have been losing these more public decisions lately. Hopefully that trend ends with Poggi deciding in our favor.
The interesting thing is not that Hurst is visiting this weekend, it is that Hardreck Walker, another DT, is visiting late June. If Poggi is feeling pressure it is that Hurst AND Walker will take spots, not just that Hurst will. The Walker visit might be the one that is bringing Poggi forward.
Poggi doesn't need to feel pressure from Hurst, its obvious that Michigan is recruiting him at RB. Fred Jackson thinks that he is a mix between Refrigerator Perry (but bigger) and Gayle Sayers (but more elusive).
More like Tecmo Bo Jackson, but more powerful.
Sam Webb has said that he is very confident that Poggi will blue, and he has also said that he believes Michigan will have a great June recruiting month.
Did Sam really say this? Do you by chance have a link? I recall Sam saying something to the effect that we are looking good for Poggi, but nothing saying that he thinks Poggi will be blue.
Looking good really only means we have a good chance, like 30% chance plus. Not that we lead.
WIth that said, i sure hope Sam did say that. Would love to have both Poggi and Hurst but i think Poggi is all Bama.
You think that if Sam felt we had a 30% chance in a two horse race he'd say we're "looking good?" I doubt it.
30% = looking good
He gives Poggi a 20% chance of going blue in an earlier post.
He says in his latest post that he thinks Poggi is "all Bama"
so one must deduce that 20% = looking very, very bad.
so a majority of the uncertainty is bundled up in the 20-30% range.
That's very complex. It seems that the difference between 22% and 28% is about as great as 28% and 90% or so. Once you're at 30, you're golden. Dip below 25 though, and you've got an uphill battle.
It was an example. Sam saying we are looking good for a recruit, may mean that he gives Michigan a 30% shot if 2 other universities are also at 30%, and 1 at 10%.
Wouldnt you say we are looking good too if we are even with 2 others?
Wait, Poggi's dad's name is Biff? Now I really want him.
Make like a tree and get the hell out of here.
I have your car towed all the way to your house and all you've got for me is light beer??
Why didn't you tell me your car had a blindspot? I could have been killed!
Say hi to your mom for me.
That's about as funny as a screen door on a battleship.
"It's leaf you idiot"
Who you calling butthead, butthead?
Just my opinion, but I do like our chances with Poggi. His parents really seemed to love the visit and the coaches, and Alabama wants him as a tight end. I think it's very close, but I just think Michigan might have a 55/45 edge.
And no, I did not think Michigan would get Levenberry, so I don't think every prospect goes our way.
Where is this tight end business coming from? That is the first I have heard that.
He plays TE in high school.
Is Alabama really looking at him for TE?
I couldn't tell you for sure because I don't follow Alabama recruiting, but I believe that's what Roll Damn Tide said in one of his updates.
From what I can gather, they want him as TE/H-Back type. Think Brad Smelley.
Also, Andrew Bone, who is Scout's 'Bama guy, is really confident that Alabama will land Poggi, but he doesn't have nearly as good of a track record as Sam Webb, so take that FWIW
I will take Sam's gut over Andrew's boner anyday of the week
I would like our chances more if Poggi was visiting prior to his annoucement.
I'd say Hurst is a lock to go blue when he visits.
I could believe all the pro-Poggi banter but after Levenberry/Garnett/Isaac/et. al. I have become very skeptical of recruits who visit other schools and commit soon after. Rarely does that seem to work out for the previous "leader" (M). Here's to preparing for the worst and hoping for the best!.....
Whatever happened to Mgoposter Roll Damn Tide? I generally enjoyed hearing his insights on common recruits.
...we can all stop worrying about it because it'll mean he's headed to Bama.
RTD is probably waiting this one out given his last 3 calls:
- Levenberry favors Michigan
- Isaac favors Michigan
- Poggi favors Michigan
Considering the alternative,in this case 1 out of 3 ain't bad
<double post. sorry.>
EDIT: Redacted my joke because I didn't realize this guy died. What kind of sick fuck posts a gif of a guy dying in a thread about recruiting? Is this MGoFacesOfDeath?
did this dude survive?
No he did not.
That window is open back there. That was his head going out as the car rolled. I saw this film in a mandatory seat belt safety class I took for all the wrong reasons.
I wish this was about recruiting. Peace to this guys' family - that he didn't die in vain. I always think about this prior to buckling up...which I guess is the point.
Please say, "Yes."
I think it's Dale Earnhardt.
E
Dude, this guy died. That is a gif of someone being killed, possibly instantaneously. Not cool.
I don't want to imagine the complaining if Michigan loses another 50/50 battle.
Not identical, but they could definitely pass as brothers
I'd be very happy with another RVB.
Troy Smith? Are you sure?
whatever his name is, some damn buckeye QB. What is his name anyway? Anyway..... memorable Michigan play
I'm not doubting the kids talents, but let's be real here. He will have a much better shot at making some noise at Michigan than he will at Bama. Southern D line recruits are freaks.
He won't have to worry about souther D-line recruits, because he's reportedly being recruited for tight end by Alabama.
Poggi, Treadwell, Green commitment on same day sometime this June, Ok recruiting deities?
Oh, and Hurst this weekend too please. It's been awhile since the last Hello post, I need a hit.
but with 31 points, I'm surprised you even know what a "Hello" post looks like. I bet you're a Hello post virgin.
Either way, welcome to the board, sir.
We don't seem to do well in these close calls when they don't visit Michigan last.
But let's hope that:
- academics
- playing at DT
- and the Hoke family culture
....win the day over Bama.
I have been hearing this too - Not a knock against Michigan or Hoke, but Saban goes around promising the best recruits that they will have a future in the NFL if they play for him, and who can compete against that? Maybe USC or Florida State. But in recent years, Michigan has not put out too many first rounders.
I think Hurst picks Michigan this weekend and Poggi goes to Alabama. (Not that they influence each other since Hurst at 6' 2'' would be better slotted for the nose anyway).
...we are in trouble. Saban rarely loses kids that he really wants. We have a knack for finishing a close second for the big fish so to speak. Hopefully that trend won't continue. I think we should really go after Green as hard as possible. Green+Treadwell+ Hurst+ Poggi would be a great finish.
This is silly. Bama doesn't get everyone they really want... by a long shot. Come on. This is classic... if they get a kid it is because they REALLY wanted him. If they don't it must be because they didn't really want him because... you know... Bama always gets a kid if they really want him so they must not have really wanted him.
Bama has never finished a class with a 4.0 star average in Scout's database. I'm pretty sure that if they were getting everyone they wanted they'd win the recruiting war every year, right? They don't. Michigan currently has a 4.0 star average with 18 commits. Are we getting everyone we want... I meant the ones we REALLY want??
Please.
I agree with you. However, there are schools out there that have a better track record at landing top tier recruits year after year and usually get what they want (not always who they want). If Bama misses on Poggi, they will surely get a top DL in his place.
Schools with a great track record? Bama, osu, USC, ND (but they will leave soon after), and FSU. I consider Michigan in the second tier, and will soon cross over and join these schools with a year or two more under Hoke. Everyone is bitching about losing out on Ty Issaic, Lavenberry, ect.. We have a great class and will continue to have a top 10 class every year with a guy that knows how to sell Michigan. Hoke and Mattison know what's up.
When Bama really wants a kid....strings get pulled. That's all I'm saying. Julio Jones committed to Fsu the night before signing day and low and behold an overnight phone call lol. Kuandjo is another example. Michigan does things right. Miss Mary and Singletary don't cut corners. I believe Bama will. All I'm saying.
Strings get pulled? Does the 14 in michiganman14 stand for years old, seriously?
Only getting people they REALLY want? Sounds like something Buckeye fans would think of.
I guess Bama didn't REALLY want Poggi after all.... it is the only explanation.
Recruit X favors Michigan. Recruit X then visits 2nd school more recently. Recruit X sets commit date. Recruit X picks other school.
It's happened way too much for me to not think that he's going to Bama
Per Poggi's father, after his second and most recent visit to Alabama:
"Everyone wants him to play defensive line, but everyone has told him that he could play tight end for them. There are a few schools recruiting him solely as a tight end/H-back and as you know from looking at the NFL draft, the last two days that position has become incredibly valuable in the league. Tennessee has been recruiting him as a H-back/tight end, as is Oklahoma. Alabama has offered him at like three different positions, so we’ll see. He just wants to play- he doesn't care where."
He gone.
While a TE is valuable at the next level. A DT has even more value in the NFL. Especially if he has received good coaching... which Poggi would get at Michigan.
NFL teams, can always pick up a good TE after the 2nd day of the draft. However, if you have a chance at a good DT, you take him in the 1st round.
To bad he doesn't see it that way, but nice try.
This reminds me of the Woody Hayes quote about passing:
"There are three things can happen when you pass the ball and two of them ain't good"
If Poggi chooses Alabama, there are three things that can happen and two of them ain't good.
A. He will indeed make it to the NFL
B. He'll have his offer pulled before signing day, in lieu of another recruit (now referred to as "Pulling a Saban"): http://oversigning.com/testing/index.php/tag/alabama/
C. He'll get cut before his RS Freshman season to make room for a 2013 recruit (read that same link for information on how Saban cuts current players, post signing day, to make room for incoming recruits)
There probably isn't much chance of anything inbetween happening.
The funny thing about Woody's statement, of course, is there are three things that can happen when you run the ball, and two of them ain't good. You can gain yards, lose yards, or fumble.
True-Dat!
Alright. Officially unbuckling and going to the bar. I've seen this movie before and don't like the ending.
This is good news given the portents for June.
He's going to the Tide. Probably why the kid from Texas was offered.
Oh, well. Although this does make me wonder a little about what it is with the current recruiting strategy that two headed battles may as well be conceded once they start.
First come first serve. I wouldn't look at it as a sign of weakness with Poggi, but a precaution if he goes elsewhere. They can't just send offers to their first choice, anything can happen with recruiting.
Why in the hell are we missing these kids, our class is shit, we are failing. I am going to go jump off a bridge. #sarcasm I would be happy if we didn't sign one more kid. This class kicks ass so quit bitching. F!
That's a bitch! We need to sign all 5 stars going forward. What an idiot!
I like how you felt the need to put the word "fucking" in that sentence.
It adds emphasis. I do the same thing.
It does add mother fucking emphasis!
Contrary to weird and extremely biased readings of what I said, I wasn't suggesting Hoke can't recruit. I am over the moon with how well the staff has done, but you can't deny there's a trend of losing 50/50 battles or even battles where a guy slightly favors Michigan. I'm just wondering if it's just one of those things or something more systematic. That's all, no bashing of the staff intended.
I reiterate, I think Poggi's Bama bound. Doubt there's any need to buckle up.
There's a decent possibility that Michigan misses out on all of their top remaining targets. That is the only downfall of having 18 verbals before June 1st. I bet Hoke lands at least 2 recruits in this class that nobody including Sam Webb is mentioning. Regardless this class will be top 5 nationally and that is awesome.
Exactly even if the class misses out on Treadwell, Green, and Poggi(highly likely). It's not the end of the world as the class is very highly rated and with great talent. I just think that we need to get ready to welcome more Willie Henry Senior Year Breakout specials(which given the success of Jake Ryan I'nm a big fan of) than five star guys to fill out the rest of the class.
I don't understand the connection between getting a lot of early verbals and missing out on later top targets. Help me out?
I think he means...
a) We've already won 18 recruiting "battles"
and
b) some top targets might possibly be turned off by the guys who are already committed.
Thanks... definitely possible.
Still, though, if you think about the particular guys involved, this doesn't seem like a realistic explanation:
Isaac clearly wasn't worried about competition at his position, since he committed knowing that another 5-star RB was about to commit to USC.
Garnett joined an O-line class at Stanford that was completely loaded with talent - much more so than even our O-line class (though I think Peat committed after him).
Levenberry... well, this might actually be relevant for Levenberry.
And for Poggi, yes, Michigan has 18 commitments already, but exactly zero of them are DTs. Even if Hurst commits, it's hard for me to believe that this would scare Poggi out of committing.
Just my opinion, but I think Poggi choosing not to decide at the end of April is an indicator. I know that academics were high on his list and he has a brother at Duke, so his family has probably pushed academics. Saban is definitely selling the NFL very hard and making him take more time to consider. Hoke hasn't been here long enough to establish what Saban has at Bama, obviously. Saban is probably spinning the offer at multiple positions as a positive and using that as a tool to guarantee playing time. I think it's likely that Saban has done enough to make academics an afterthought for Poggi. Have him going to Bama, merely my take on it.
Guess we'll see if academics are part of the equation for Poggi.
If anyone picks Bama over Michigan and then says academics were an important part of the decision, then they are either misinformed, delusional or just full of it.
Having a brother at Duke is a good sign.
We could wind up surprised, but I've got to go with the consensus that Poggi may commit to Bama. But we'll see if he changes his mind after UM wins the kickoff classic in Dallas on Sept. 1. (fingers crossed)
We missed out on Levenberry. We missed out on Isaac. Why in God's name is everybody ready to write off every recruit we come down to the final two, for, now? Lord. Bunch of gloomy folk. Let's wait and see.
I think what's happened is we've learned to read between the lines instead of applying hope and personal biases to the information received. In all of these cases there's been what seems to be a tipping point where the battle has gone against UM and never was able to reverse course. In the case of Poggi, it seems like we've gone past the tipping point and thus the negativity.
I believe it's referred to as hindsight bias. After you get kicked in the balls three times in the past 70 days you decide wearing a cup is a great idea...
for good luck.
We NEEED Poggi and Hurst.
One down...
