Please register for U-M License Plate in Texas

Submitted by GetSumBlue on

Don't think this is OT, but if it is, someone can correct.

Calling all Texans:

I just received an email from the Houston Alumni association stating that a University of Michigan specialty license plate could finally be coming to Texas.

"The University of Michigan license plate is on its way to Texas! A portion of each plate sale goes to support scholarships for Texas students attending U-M. Be among the first to register at http://www.myplates.com/go/michigan

The design goes before the TX DMV board as early as May 9. We need to show we can meet the new 200 plate minimum, so please register if you're interested. My Plates will send you a special launch offer when the plate goes on sale. Go Blue!"

Come on everyone!

appears to be taking an "interest count" instead of being a registration form.  If you volunteer to receive emails regarding the status of this effort, are you locked into ordering one?  I wonder if we can get the count to 200 without necessarily committing to purchasing one...

Personally, I'd be happy to deal with a few spam emails so that the Texans on the Blog can get their license plates.

but from the standpoint of the TX DMV, why in the world would they allow that? Texans seem pretty damn proud of their whole "Don't mess with Texas" schtick, and I have a hard time envisioning them letting a logo from one of those damn Yankee schools up north sully their license plate. Maybe they like the revenue more than anything else.

It would stick in my craw a bit to see a Buckeye logo on a Michigan license plate.

Yeah, I see Alabama plates (gah!) all the time.  I've even seen a Sparty plate (blecch).  The website includes plates for most major Texas universities and a few other schools, mainly from the southeast.  Big Ten representation includes Sparty, Indiana, Illinois, Nebraska, and Purdue, so it's a little unclear as to what, exactly, the criteria for inclusion are. :-)

BTW, I clicked through one of the UT plates, and the base prices appear to be $55 for a single year, $195 for a five-year term, and $295 for a ten-year term; they go up from there if you want a custom plate instead of random text.  They also mention that you may have to pay extra when you register the vehicle so that the expiration date on the plates and vehicle sticker match up.

I added my name to the list, but I'm not entirely sold... that's a pretty pricey way to show pride.

BTW - the registration form assumes that your state is Texas.  I don't know that they're going to be verifying addresses or anything, but I doubt having out-of-state users sign up is going to make much of an impression upon TxDMV, so those of you who aren't in Texas can feel free to save your spam folder. :-)

YES! I actually boughta shirt from a facebook ad (first time ever, that) that said something to the effect of "In Texas, blue runs deep". I swear, I've met more Michiganders here in Dallas than I ever did while living in Ann Arbor!!!

There is a U-M Texas plate I see around my neighborhood peridocially. I assumed it was a purchased vanity plate.

Unfortunately, there is a Sparty plate in the parking garage at work on a regular basis also. I thought I was far enough away to avoid them.

Basically, the law is currently written such that only state universities within Illinois, or private universities within Illinois or contiguous states, can have a university vanity plate.  As noted in the 2nd link provided, this is known as the "notre dame law" and was pushed through by nd alum michael madigan.

I moved to the Dallas area recently and reluctantly gave up my U of M license plate from Michigan. I did save it but sure do miss it on the car.  I signed up and will eagerly await updates.

Nice.. got the same email.

What a convoluted process. Apparently the Dallas alumni club had to put up $5k just to get the ball rolling. Then, there was the design and feedback stage last year. Now they need 200 people to show interest. Then you need to pay $55/yr for the privilege.

Don't get me wrong, I'll get one, but jeez..how hard is it to print a block M on a piece of metal?
