Playoff Coverage Exhaustion

Submitted by ijohnb on
Just got to float it out there. I am completely aware that it is has something to do with a certain participant, but does anybody else think it is getting carried away? I am interested in these other bowl games on their own terms and they are going "full playoff" all the time and way more than last year. Understanding that MSU being in it is part of the equation, is playoff exhaustion a real thing? I feel it right about now. Sometimes I actually just want to hear about the Auburn v. Memphis game.

My questiion is why in the hell are these games being played on New Year's eve for god's sake.  Playing them Saturday sets up perfectly with the New Year's day games being the prelude and the championship games the following day being the main course.

But now they've got it exactly backwards AND they're showing the games on a day where I'll bet they're going to see a dramatic reduction in viewers as people have other things to do outside of football.

Considering who's playing the nightcap, I'm okay with that.  I can understand the thinking somewhat though.  If you're at a NYE party, do you want to watch a football game or a bunch of crappy interviews?

Only problem is that the Sparty-Bama game will probably end at or around midnight when most people will be tuned to network TV.

Needs to be trained how to say Michigan and State in the same sentence every 45 mins so we can learn to pronounce their coaches name, Mick D'Altoids

Every college football fan pined like hell for a CFP during the BCS era and now we finally have one. Can't complain. IMO it's no different than the hype surrounding the NCAA Final Four. If Michigan were in it, we'd be on cloud nine with all the coverage. I also have a feeling we'll be there soon. So just hold on, buddy. We're closer than most people believe.

I also like having 4 different conferences represented and I don't think we can really argue against the teams playing in the playoff games. You get to read about some pretty cool back stories about each team or coach you never knew about. Nothing pissed me off more than the sour grapes surrounding the BCS every year and how someone else deserved to be there. I will gladly put up with ESPN/ABC's over-played commercials to see a true CFP Champion crowned at the end of the season.

Agree. We have so many bowl games and they always talk about Clemson-Oklahoma and MSU-Bama every single halftime and nothing else. What about the Baylor-UNC game or LSU-TTU game? As for the playoff, you could have it on New Years or saturday and get more viewership than competing with Times Square.

agree, they'll talk about it on every halftime show until the games are played. funny thing is if it were Michigan I could never get enough of it, I'd tune into each halftime show and just smile the entire time...

It's (about to be) 2016 and people still complain about the media?

Change the channel, go to a different website, etc.  There is no shortage of coverage of Memphis/Auburn.  You could spend weeks (literally) reading game previews and watching Auburn or Memphis football breakdowns.

Sure the playoff coverage could give rise to exhaustion, especially of the trivial.  Yet I find myself starved for any coverage of the M submarine at the same time, leading to further exhaustion.

If we were in it...I'd be soaking up all of the fluff.

You have to understand that it's on ESPN and ESPN is obviously going to push a premier EXCLUSIVE sporting event on its network.

I hate how it's become NFL Network #2 during football season because football is played on CBS, NBC, and FOX. ESPN generally gets MNF and that's it. But their coverage throughout the week is overkill to even normal overkill.

This I can put up with...

1. It's a one-off event and not a season long thing

2. It's exclusive to their network and if Michigan was playing, I wouldn't be able to get enough of the slurpage. I'd be taping media and shit like that, just because it's a once a year thing. For some programs, it's a once in a lifetime thing.

Well, ESPN/ABC is airing the actual games, therefore, they are going to highlight, publicize, etc. all they can to show the games off. I think last year the OSU-Alabama game had the highest non-Super Bowl sports viewership ever (until the championship game I believe).

but it's likely a bit to do with the cosmic fact that msu will win it all if they beat Bama. Nobody outside of Lansing wants that so it's something I'd rather not think about, let alone discuss.

I don't know, I work in a place where I have to see the Detroit papers and LSJ every day, and the slurping is definitely getting old. I read papers far more religiously in 1997 than I do today, and I don't remember such a level of coverage. Print media kicking and scratching to stay relevant, I suppose.

I'm a big time Antenna TV watcher because I love retro TV shoes, and they have some good lineups. Every fucking commercial break, they have to advertise for this cheeseball assed program coming on tonight about Mork and State's rise. I'll be glad when it finally airs, and even happier if they get pasted tomorrow.

Seems like corporate ram-my-head-up-my-ass-because-I-know-what-I'm-doing obstinence from ESPN. I want to watch both games but I got stuff to do on new year's eve.

I suspect ESPN will correct it after this one. A network that is struggling right now is about to see a serious dip in viewership in their prized posession.

As long as you are here complaining about the coverage Michigan is getting in any year we make the playoffs and remain consistent in your complaints, I can support your view.
