Pizza Bowl Open Thread
I managed to get out of a meeting earlier than expected, so this shall be the last thing I do at my desk here....
Continuing our series of non-flashy, non-relevant bowl games is the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl, played right here in Michigan at the home of the playoff-bound Detroit Lions.
Our contestants are a 7-5 Western Michigan team versus a 6-6 Purdue team. Most pundits are predicting a close one that, either way, shows the world that Purdue has a way to go to relevancy.
4:30 PM on ESPN.
Later this evening, the Belk Bowl. Oh yeah, fun and excitement continues.

Missed FG. This is just peachy for conference "prestige."
December 27th, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
I wonder if Purdue is kicking themselves already for giving Hope that extension yet? They look terrible.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:09 PM ^
Start of a great night tonight. Fat Tire, Portillo's, football, and megangoblue.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:12 PM ^
+ alcohol + GF == #winning
December 27th, 2011 at 5:17 PM ^
Ever been to Portillo's? It gets a spot pretty high on the list, even with the Pizza and Belk Bowls on.
Home for me is a town with about as many places to eat as people, and I still fight traffic to go a town north and eat there.

$2 refills on mugs of beer after you buy the first mug/beer for $3.50 on Sundays and Mondays, plus TVs and pool tables. I get a little rush every time I sneak into enemy territory to drink and sneak back out undetected.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:33 PM ^
If you ever make it to Illinois, you need to make it your first stop. Anyone else from the area can vouch for that (you can't get it any further east than Merrilville, IN though, which sucks).
December 27th, 2011 at 5:10 PM ^
that was an insane catch of a pass that never should have been thrown. Nice play to get to first and goal. How do you throw into double coverage like that? It ended up being triple.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:13 PM ^
Portillo's alone would be the start of a great night.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:13 PM ^
Unintentional onside kick works like a charm for Purdue. This is hilarious.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:14 PM ^
Hope drew that up
December 27th, 2011 at 5:13 PM ^
I wondered why they didn't go for 2, they were going for the onside kick after. Because it worked I'll say it was clever. :o)
December 27th, 2011 at 5:14 PM ^
are you kidding? Gutsy call. I think the mathlete's analysis is proving accurate in this game. MOAR two-pt conversions! MOAR onside kicks!!
December 27th, 2011 at 5:20 PM ^
This is an ugly game, but man, I really find a lot of these low games against equally crappy teams to be quite entertaining.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:22 PM ^
These games tend to start sloppy because of the long layoffs. I would expect the same in the Michigan vs Virginia Tech game as well. So don't yell at your tv if Denard starts out a little rusty.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
Another turnover!? 2 each for both teams and we're still in the 1st half.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
I didn't realize this until seeing Alex Carder and remembering the jackass reporter saying he was the best QB in Michigan, but we actually played WMU this year. That seems like an eternity ago.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:25 PM ^
Two great gashes of the Purdue D end in an interception. This is getting oddly entertaining for the turnovers alone.
OFFTOPIC: I spent most of the first quarter on the phone getting promoted - late Christmas gift to me.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:30 PM ^
So when my power goes out in a storm, I can now blame you?
December 27th, 2011 at 5:33 PM ^
It means you can call me and I will direct it to the appropriate designer, rather than design the solution myself. :-)
December 27th, 2011 at 5:44 PM ^
Do you have the authority to redirect the repair crews to my area as well? In all seriousness, I'm in the northeast corner of Ann Arbor, and in an older neighborhood with above ground power lines which made it seem like any substantial snow storm came through we would lose power. It has actually gotten significantly infrequent over the last couple years. Anything that you guys did, or is it mostly the transmission line companies?
December 27th, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
It's probably something I designed for a reliability project. I find myself out there quite a bit. I typically have the north and west side of the city, as well as Scio and Lima Townships. That is (soon to be was) me too.

Between increased power outages and increase in bowl game threads.

I applaud Western for breaking with convention and calling their Sam linebackers Rover instead. It's about time someone finally stood up and did it. /s
December 27th, 2011 at 5:35 PM ^
Loved that fan sign that said something along the lines of "Detroit belongs to Purdue". Only their fan base could embrace the Pizza Bowl like that. Take pride in it BoilerFan.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:45 PM ^
I have a feeling the lead and a game of "hot potato" will have a lot in common in this game, for apparently nobody really wants to win this one.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:54 PM ^
And yet noone wants to lose it either. It's a vicious cycle.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
Huge cajones
December 27th, 2011 at 5:47 PM ^
Jesus, second onside attempted and recovered by purdue. This game rocks. Seriously, very entertaining.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:48 PM ^
Kinda sad that Purdue needs to revert to an on side kick half way through the second quarter against Western.
December 27th, 2011 at 6:05 PM ^
Needs to, or is capatalizing on an advantage based on the way Western lines up. It worked twice.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:48 PM ^
Danny Hope reads the Mathlete.
December 27th, 2011 at 5:49 PM ^
Reads mgoblog
December 27th, 2011 at 6:03 PM ^
.....shouting, "MOAR ONSIDE KICKS!". That would be pretty funny, I think.
EDIT: Danny Hope storms the field, distracting the officials with his facial hair. Looking at the replay, I think I see his point, not to mention the moustache.
OH,GEEZ EDIT: Did I miss something? Did someone grease the football?
December 27th, 2011 at 6:03 PM ^
Some seriously great MACtion
December 27th, 2011 at 6:07 PM ^
Even though the lockout's over this is still better than todays NBA.
December 27th, 2011 at 6:16 PM ^
Another unsolicited slam on the nba
December 27th, 2011 at 6:23 PM ^
Jim Romes had a few days off and I miss him pointing out why MAC > NBA during the week.
December 27th, 2011 at 6:31 PM ^
Jim Rome is an unwatchable asshat.
December 27th, 2011 at 7:19 PM ^
Jim Rome is a god.
December 27th, 2011 at 6:09 PM ^
This is a rather exicting goal line stand, but alas, it ends in a field goal.....or an onside kick.
December 27th, 2011 at 6:30 PM ^
Just used the Little Caesars coupon for free crazy bread that they advertised during the game. So good.
December 27th, 2011 at 6:43 PM ^
It is pretty good, but I don't understand what is so crazy about it. The first time I had it, I was expecting cheese to be involved in some capacity.
December 27th, 2011 at 7:04 PM ^
It is really hitting the spot for me. I am a recent u of m college graduate in transition to a job, so naturally I got one, but this definitely helps the pockets.
December 27th, 2011 at 6:42 PM ^
Once again, fouls and Zeno's Paradox....it's uncanny this bowl season.
December 27th, 2011 at 6:46 PM ^
I've been wanting to ask you. What is the deal with the ponies. I just googled Derpy and laughed at the youtube video.
December 27th, 2011 at 6:54 PM ^
My kids actually got me into the latest incarnation of "My Little Pony", which I obviously find amusing enough to make use of show-related memes, not to mention my avatar. It's actually a sort of Animaniacs-esque deal, where the animation is clearly meant for kids, but the references in the show are actually pop culture in their nature (it makes constant Broadway and movie references), and some of the humor is moderately adult. It helps that I actually know a few people that work on the show in Vancouver through my sister, so I've become mild acquaintances with some of its creators. I just find the show funny basically, and for someone that has to do what I do each day, somewhat escapist.
December 27th, 2011 at 7:05 PM ^
I didn't think I would learn anything about my little ponies today. I also loled at the definition of brony on urban dictionary. From the few clips I saw it doesn't look all that bad.
December 27th, 2011 at 7:11 PM ^
In the year that I have been on this board, you're actually only the second person to ask. I don't mind answering - I am obviously not ashamed of it. LOL
