Pick one Jaylen Brown or Caris Levert

Submitted by MgoHacker on
Title says it all who would you rather have for next year if their is truly no Beileinien way to get both. Both will be great offensively and both will head to the NBA after the year commences. Levert is almost certainly the better defender given his experience. Senior leadership is important however with Spike, Zak and Derrick there will be plenty. Caris is also very injury prone which is why I would lean towards Jaylen. What are your thoughts?

Caris all day. He really cares about this team its not just another stop on the road to the NBA. Last year I remember him just laying out to get a rebound. He plays with heart. Brown seems to be deciding based on which gets him to the NBA faster.

If I were being totally selfish I would pick Brown.  Foot issues can be not only serious but recurring (see Durant, Bill Walton, Doug Collins, etc) so unfortunately I don't know if Levert will ever get over them properly.

Brown. Duke showed you how good you can be with freshmen. That's all that scored in the second half of the title game last night.

Starters PG:Walton SG:Levert SF:Brown PF:Irvin C:Doyle The bench is going to be loaded with guys like Spike,MAAR,Dawkins,Chatman,Wilson,Robinson, and Donnal. Also don't know what Teske will bring to the table.

the minutes play out.  Some guys who played last year may sit a lot.  But as they say, depth is always a good problem to have.

My early guess:

PG:  Derrick (25), Spike (15)

SG: Caris (35), MAAR (5)

SF: Dawkins (25), Robinson (10), Irvin (5)

PF: Irvin (30), Chatman (5), Wagner (5)

C:  Doyle (25), Wilson (10), Donnal (5)

I hope/think MAAR gets a lot more than 5 minutes/game. He's going to be a great defender which can be a frequent difference maker against teams with strong backcourts.

Plus I think his presence on the court can make for better overall offensive performance, even if he isn't a top shooter. Defenses have to account for MAAR's ability to get to the rim which helps our guards spread the floor more easily and get better shot selections.

Won't play this game. I don't know who is reading this. I don't want to be disrespectful to the camp of either LeVert or Brown. And honestly, I want both. And if Brown wants to come to Michigan, I'll bet you the cost of the next HTTV that Beilein finds a way to accomodate BOTH Brown AND LeVert.

Let's assume that both players will leave after next year so this is a one year decision and not a situation where Brown says for 2-3 years. Does that change your pick? For one year I pick Levert. I will admit that I haven't watched enough of Brown to judge his potential fairly. If he were to stay for 2-3 years then maybe you pick him. Either way, next year will be decided by how well the six guys taller than 6'6" play, not the guards and wings.

LOL at those saying Levert.

Did you miss last nights game?  That completely developed team of Wisconsn had no answer down the stretch for that young blue chip team of Duke.

You take the blue chipper and don't think twice about it.

People citing Leverts stats remind me of the people that use to cite Devin Gardners stats in 2013 trying to make the point he's a good QB.   Our basketball team was bad this past year.  Levert's stats look like they do because we had no one else.

It's not true that he got his stats because we didn't have anyone else. He got the stats because he was anointed as the man and everyone else deferred to him and waited for him to do everything while he was trying to live up to the expectations and put the team on his shoulders.

That meant everything had to either start with him or run through him and once he got the ball there was no team ball, there was no team, just a bunch of guys standing there watching Caris and he either force a bad three or dribble around and around trying to make something happen until he forced up an off balance fade away 12 footer with 5 guys in his face.

When Caris was part of the team he was good to great, when he was supposed to be the team it just didn't work and though he was getting numbers the offense bogged down.

The key next year, whether Caris is here or not, will be to play as a team with heart and effort the way we did so often the after the starters went down, even with starters coming back or better players coming in.

Hustle, concentration, intensity on defense, moving, cutting, sharp ball movement, attacking the basket/looking for the best shot or good shots rather than specifically looking for threes. Looking inside, driving the lane and taking some mid range jumpers as well will make the threes easier and we'll hit a higher percentage of them when they come naturally and in the rhythm of a good offense.

Just trying to score instead of only trying threes will prevent the deadly long droughts as well.

With Caris you know exactly what you are getting, and with Brown you think you know what you are getting, but you really have no idea. Where is it possible for Brown to be a total bust, Caris will not be. Plus add in the fact that Caris has team leadership/chemistry/understanding of the playbook....I'd say Caris is a easy pick.

In my ideal world, you can in fact have it both ways and LeVert would stay and Brown would come to Michigan. That being said, it is probably a safer bet - at least based on what I understand - that LeVert stays for another year than Brown coming to Michigan, so based on probabilities, I would take LeVert if I can only choose one. That, and as others have said, it's the difference between having data and having none too.

I'd choose whichever is here longer.  If both are gone after one season, then Levert all the way.  Why?  We'll first we expect players to be loyal, so we need to show the same.  Second, Levert is a really good player, knows the system and is a leader, why trade a sure thing for a chance?

Long term, if Brown stays 2-3 years, I'd choose him given Levert wants to go to the NBA...

I'd always take the guy who has done it at a top level (enough to be widely considered a fringe lottery pick until his injury)... not to mention he's been in Beilein's system for years (ask Kam Chatman how that matters).

I'd consider Brown because, frankly, it'd be nice if Beilein could grab a top 5 kid as it might continue some recruiting momentum (we all know top kids look to see where other top kids go)... but Levert seems to be more of a known quantity and won't have to adjust to the college game or a new system. I'd take Levert.

Don't get me wrong, I like Levert but he was inconsistent a lot this year. Although it sucks that he broke his foot (again), it did allow for the team to gel this year much more than I believe they would have. Levert shined in 2014 due to being a "part" of the team, but not the leader. Having Jaylen come in as a freshman and without the immediate "leadership role" being thrust upon him, I believe he can help the team out and give us at least 2 solid years. Levert coming back will be great for stats, but I don't think the overall team performance would be better.
