Pharaoh Brown and other Oregon Ducks players accused of bullying
Ok so my first post, please be gentle.
I don't know if anyone has seen this yet, but a video showing what some are claiming as bullying at Oregon has gone viral. In the video, several Oregon football players can be seen taking part in a campus snowball fight which ends when people and players begin to attack a car and a man who stepped out of it with snowballs.
One of such players was former Michigan commit Pharaoh Brown.
"A photo posted by Register-Guard photographer Chris Pietsch shows UO tight end Pharaoh Brown dumping a bucket of snow on another student. The viral video shows someone wearing the same outfit using a similar looking bucket to dump snow on the driver of the car."
Although this is kind of a dick move, to me it just comes off as young kids making a bad decision. I was wondering what the MgoBlog community thought of this.

I wish there were more snowball fights in the world.

If you're going to get yourself into a snowball fight, you better have this guy on your side.

In the event that you do not want to create another tab:

Sometimes people forget what it was like to be young. I am 40 and still throw snow at kids (and sometimes adults). I can't believe the way todays society tries to make criminals of youths having fun...
December 9th, 2013 at 11:02 AM ^
that "youths" can be taught and, more importantly, expected to stop their fun WHEN IT'S AT THE EXPENSE OF OTHER PEOPLE, then you have a very low opinion of youths and the society that shapes them.

Kids being kids. While it sucks for the old man getting stuck in that frenzy I can't help but think this is just a case of immature college kids being immature college kids. That said, mob mentality is in full force here, scary what people do in situations like this.
December 8th, 2013 at 7:54 PM ^
Really? Would you treat other people that way when you were 18-22? That "old man" was a physics professor... not that any football players would know that. To me, this screams of the Oregon football players thinking they're above everyone else, who wouldn't think that given the attention they get? Would you appreciate your father being treated this way? What if one of those snow balls was ice or has a rock in it? Pretty disgusting to be honest.
December 8th, 2013 at 8:00 PM ^
No I wouldn't, but I wasn't raised the same way as others. This isn't just about the football team either, there are plenty of other people there that idly sat by and let it happen, and probably even joined in. Like I said, this is "immature" college kids doing "immature" things.
December 8th, 2013 at 7:59 PM ^
i'm just against it in terms of it being disrespectful and douchey and indicative of these kids with inflated senses of self-importance thinking they're way cooler than they actually are.
December 8th, 2013 at 8:09 PM ^
That was a dick move and it definitely seemed like a mob mentality, but come on, it was snow. And yes, that "old man" is still old regardless of being a physics professor. What does that matter? If he worked at Wal-Mart then it's OK for him to get pelted with snowballs? It obviously wasn't just football players involved in this anyway. Bottom line is it was a fun idea that went over the top but really isn't that huge a deal.

Yes, criticizing people for unprovoked assault is "snooty arrogance."
I hope someone breaks your nose with an unprovoked iceball one day and then calls you snooty and arrogant when you dare to be upset about that.

Unreal how this is even a story. America continues to soften....

Had the guy retaliated how?
December 8th, 2013 at 8:41 PM ^
by starting his car in D and not waiting for the prankster in front of him to get out of the way
December 8th, 2013 at 8:43 PM ^
America isn't softening, its standard for respectful behavior is dropping fast. There was a time when this type of act dirceted at an adult, especially on a college campus, would have been unthinkable. The fact that you consider it to be not a story says it all.
Nice to see at least one player had the decency to apologize for it.

i don't really think this would be any more morally defensible had the person in the car been younger...
December 8th, 2013 at 9:57 PM ^
It's about what's socially acceptable.
December 8th, 2013 at 10:19 PM ^
Old man blocked in a car who happens to be emeritus in physics (I think), it's just sad and pathetic. Kids can be kids and have a good time among themselves but it is unfortunate that respect for elders or faculty or the assumption that "hey, we shouldn't block cars and involve people not in the fight" doesn't seem to matter there.
Social assumptions about respect continue to slide while informing what is assumed acceptable.
December 8th, 2013 at 11:34 PM ^
is not the age of the person driving the car, but solely the action of bullying and being thoughtless and assholey.
i don't care if the person in the car is a physics professor or a pizza boy, it's just the idea of picking on people for no reason other than to feel an inflated sense of coolness.
December 8th, 2013 at 11:57 PM ^
And I'm guessing there's probably pretty general agreement to that, at least among the people that find this objectionable in the first place.
But when it comes to historical standards, which is what came up in this subthread and a couple of others, I think it's the elder-respect issue that's really changed. There have always been people whose understanding of consent is shaky and I can easily imagine in one of our snowball fights back in the day that someone might have gone after one of the other kids (by college age I don't think it would have happened, but when we were kids) that was just looking on and not part of it. It would have been dickish, but it isn't unthinkable.
But a teacher? No way in hell.
That wasn't right, it shouldn't have mattered. But it did.
December 9th, 2013 at 2:20 PM ^
All for a good snowball fight when it is among people wanting to participate. Take it to anyone in your frat, team, etc, hit them all as hard as possible all in good fun.
Randomly stopping cars and then pelting individuals without warning multiple times in the face is just being an asshole and should lead to some punishment for those involved, illegal detainment, assault, etc etc I would think could be pressed by the individuals in the video.
If you happen to think this should be condoned, IMO you might be that same kind of asshole. I would truly enjoy seeing your reaction if this happened to you or a member of your family and then let me know what ya think.

Yeah, you certainly wouldn't mind this happening to your father/wife/girlfriend right? I'm sure they'd love to have a bucket of snow thrown into their car and be pegged in the face by a bunch of over-entitled football players.

Those students were blocking the cars from leaving. Potentially dangerous if escalated.
December 8th, 2013 at 8:48 PM ^
There's not a person on here that would be OK with a mob of people throwing snowballs in the face of their mother, father, girlfriend, grandfather, etc.

December 8th, 2013 at 8:57 PM ^

December 8th, 2013 at 7:52 PM ^
and mobs are douches. it is what it is.

I mean, it's about time Oregon stood up to anybody. Good practice for the bowl game.

Funny for abit, went over the line with throwing bucket of snow in the car. Kids being kids.

From lynchings to riots mobs have caused an incredible amount of pain and misery in this country. We need as a society have to do a better job of dealing with this aspect of human society.

seems more like a prank than bullying. College students around the nation do shit like this.
December 8th, 2013 at 8:11 PM ^
I strongly disagree. You can both sense and see the hostility of the scene. I might say that the first car, the van, was a prank. But what they did to the old man was far more than a prank.
December 8th, 2013 at 8:12 PM ^
many pranks are forms of bullying, especially when they're done on random strangers who have no possible way to consent and probably wouldn't consent if given the chance.
