PFF Comments for UM-PSU

Submitted by alum96 on

PFF was not so high on Jake as we were with eye test.   Somehow he got a negative grade after leading the nation the prior 2 weeks (thanks Indiana and rutgers!).  Main takeaway was he did well when not under pressure; when under pressure he only had 50% completion rate and 39 yds passing.  Considering he played an actual competent defense unlike the prior 2 weeks, I thought he did more than enough myself!

Quarterback Jake Rudock (-1.3 game grade) came into the day coming off his best two starts this season (he led the nation in our PFF QB grades the last two weeks), but against the Nittany Lions he had a mixed day. When he was not under pressure he was very consistent, going 19 of 26 with 217 yards and a PFF grade of +2.0. However, the storyline was flipped when the Nittany Lions’ pass rush got to him; he was pressured on 15 dropbacks, and on those he only completed 50 percent of his passes for 39 yards and a QB rating of 22.6 and a -2.0 PFF grade.

The breakout game for Taco? PFF loved our DL again which has been a theme most of the year.  Opponent caveats aside (PSU OL is crap) but it was nice to see secondary contributions from Taco Taco Man -- I gotta be a Taco man.  Hope to see more Taco smothering OSU QB(s) this week to build up to the 2016 season.

The story of the game was the consistent pressure the defense was able to create on Penn State QB Christian Hackenberg (-0.8). The Wolverines managed to get pressure on 65 percent of Hackenberg dropbacks. The most successful pass-rushers were DE Taco Charlton (+4.6), who had seven total pressures with two sacks, and DE Chris Wormley (+3.7), who had 10 total pressures also with two sacks.

After the early blip to Barkley, the rush D settled in quite nicely sans Glasgow.  Again, caveats for competition level but it was nice to see domination even against a motley crew.

Penn State only attempted 17 run plays, but outside of the first run to Saquon Barkley (+0.6), which went for 56 yards, the Wolverines held the Nittany Lions to just 17 yards on 16 designed run attempts. Both of the Wolverines’ starting defensive tackles created havoc in the run game, especially Maurice Hurst (+4.0), who had an outstanding run-stop percentage of 23.1 thanks to three stops on 13 run snaps. The Wolverines won this game thanks to their overwhelming talent on the defensive line against the weakness of Penn State’s offensive line.

While the last blurb is from the PSU section, UM's pass protect seems to continue to be "well above average" while the run blocking is (redacted).   It did help Nassib went out of the game early (didnt realize he only played 2 snaps) but the interior of the line seemed to keep Zettel and Johnson at bay in the pass rush which is all you can ask of the unit at its current performance level.  It appears Cole kicked the a$$ of the non Nassib DE.

Entering into this week, the Nittany Lions had been able to hang their hats on the defensive line trio of Austin Johnson (-0.6), Anthony Zettel (+0.1) and Carl Nassib (who only played two snaps in this game). Neither Zettel nor Johnson were able to get much going versus the Wolverines’ offensive line, with Zettel getting four pressures and Johnson zero. The loss to injury of Nassib, who currently has PFF’s highest pass-rushing productivity by a 4-3 DE at 19.1 (the second highest is Oklahoma State’s Emmanuel Ogbah at 15.9), the Penn State pass rush was significantly weaker.

Bad boys bad boys...whatcha gonna do?

Top performers:

DE Taco Charlton (+4.6)

DT Maurice Hurst (+4.0)

DE Chris Wormley (+3.7)

OL Mason Cole (+2.8)

LB James Ross (+2.0)

He was +2.0 on 26 of his pass attempts (when not hurried), and -2.0 on 15 of his pass attempts (when hurried). The average of those two numbers is a total grade of -1.3. No idea how PFF does its ratings, but that seems mathematically...odd...

When you consider Hack had two (2) completions of over 20 yards; one of which was a gift when Peppers had the WR blanketed then used poor technique to play the ball.

Without that, Hack is 12/31 for 112 yards and 0 TDs, for a YPA of 3.61.

Pro scouts are supposed to take those things into account, especially if you're going to split out when QB is pressured or not.

The reason behind the rule is too important. Football can't say we're too incompentent to protect our QBs from serious head injuries.

They need to spend time in the film room this offseason reviewing all the calls and questionable non-calls and reach a consensus on what constitutes targeting and how to handle cases that are close.

The Bg Ten also needs to look closely at the competence of their replay officials.

Lose Jenkins-Stone, add Mone and Gary*.

I agree.

If we had a truly elite speed DE ala Calhoun or Bosa you could not double him and he'd probably have Nassib like #s next year.  But we'd be talking Alabama riches at that point.

We won't have a normal BUCK next year unless Marshall gets his head out his ass or a guy like Jones is ready to play as a rs fr but the "big kids" starting line will be something like Wormley - Mone - Glasgow - Henry.   Our 2nd team of (a buck to be named later) - Hurst - Godin - Charlton would probably be starting for the bottom half the of the conference.

The 5-1-5 we play next year will be cool.

*oh yes indeed

Yes easy sell to DL (as with almost every defensive player in this class) - you are just about all going to play in 2017 and many of you will start since almost everyone is gone in 13 months.

Gary is "only" 280 so I guess would be a backup end next year.   Also hoping Shelton Johnson can contribute something - he looked fun on film if undersized for Big 10 football at that point.  225 SDE doesn't work quite well - will be curious what he weighs in at next spring (all weight gain AND weight loss is good of course)

Dunno.  People who do football more serious than me seem to think he is oversized.  I think the type of body you want there is a Frank Clark type in a perfect world.

Dante Fowler - who was Durkin's BUCK at UF - was 6'3 261 going into the draft.  (Carlos Kemp is about that size coming out of HS)  Obviously style of play is part of it and not just size - not sure how athletic he is in space like they want the BUCK to be.  Obviously Fowler is one of those freak of nature guys so difficult to compare anyone to him.

I realize a Durkin really prefers a Buck LB to a traditional WDE. But I do think Charlton is going to be the best guy we have available. If so, then I imagine we'd put Charlton there and have him basically play WDE (even though he'd probably still be called a Buck). Then I have to imagine at least one of Marshall, Rueben Jones, or Shelton Johnson will be ready to contribute as a backup.

The fumble and pick were ugly but he did take a couple nasty licks and kept the ball moving late in the game. Overall, I'd give him a B- also considering the lagging run game.

that is a bit harsh to me.  the pick was on a 3rd and very long.  i don't see a problem taking a chance there.  the int return hurt tho in terms of yardage.

and the fumble was due to a blind side hit; that is less than 50% his fault.  give the defender some credit there.

i think he did a great job, considering some of the hits he took.  his confidence is sky high; especially on throws > 20 yards.

also, earlier in the year, he missing some of those screens.  i think he nailed everyone of them in this game, and there had to be at least 10 of them.

At one point, it seemed like Rudock completed 10 in a row or something. He had 3 bad throws and one bad play I can think of. He gotten away with two. One he threw a pick. The other was not a throw but he fumbled. No way Rudock was worse than Hack.

It is great to see about our DL. We need them in full swing this week against the run.

I've been seeing a lot of PFF this year (front page and threads) and I don't remember seeing anything from them here before. Their "about" page makes it seem like they've been up and running in their current capacity dating back to at least 2010 and possibly 2004.

Are these college grades new features or have I been completely oblivious for years on end?

Just added college this year I believe.  Been doing pro stuff a long while.

I tried not to read about any Michigan football stuff outside the confines of Mgoblog last year because it hurt my eyes and scarred my heart so maybe they started it last year but its recent either way.
