Petition: Seven Nation Army

Submitted by Maize n Blue on

EDIT: OK relax everyone. The main concern was that playing 7NA 5 times in a quarter is a bit excessive. Although I'd like to see piped-in music removed completely, I also understand why its popular. If Hoke and the players like it, obviously thats what matters most... but I have a feeling the emotional response to the song will be less significant with more frequent use.

I know there are more important things going on right now, but I would like to gauge interest on this board about starting a petition regarding the use of piped in music. Although getting rid of it entirely is probably not a realistic goal at this point, I would like to write a letter to the appropriate parties in order to limit its use. The 1st quarter just ended, and I heard Seven Nation Army play about 5 times already. How would you guys feel about a petition promoting the following:

  • Emphasis on the MMB over piped-in music
  • Songs like "Seven Nation Army" should only be played ONCE throughout the game if at all. (I have to admit at the ND game, I didn't mind a well-placed White Stripes or Lose Yourself when used sparringly.)
  • Following the tradition of Michigan football and the game day experience

I support banning One Nation Army. It should never be played.

Seven Nation Army rocks though and makes our student section louder with a chant they enjoy doing.

Join this century.

Touche' about the title. And no, it does not get louder (when it counts during pre-snap reads). Many make the argument (including Brian) that when the music stops before 3rd down, the crowd is singing instead of yelling consistently. And if you read my post, I said it should be limited. [cant switch out of bold for some reason]... if not banned.

People always used to bitch about how quiet the Big House was. Now that the fans are getting involved, you're complaining that we're making the wrong kind of noise.  Good grief.  If you don't like it, don't do it.  It's not especially exciting to watch a game that's 14-0 in the first quarter when teams are just trading punts/turnovers

Before third downs the mmb plays their hex song or whatever that also involves not continous noise and makes the crowd quieter than it could be in theory but nobody complains about that because its the band.  If you have a problem with piped in music fine, but don't try to complain it leads to less noise than the band playing would create or some bullshit like that.

What I don't understand is why PSU basically adopted it as their fight song. It's not like the White Stripes have any relation to PSU, they're from Detroit. I just don't get it. If anyone can lay claim to the usage of the song, it should at least be a Michigan based team, preferably a minor league team, but whatever to get the crowd pumped up.

Go to a state game, its all piped in, all the time, and it sucks.

MMB could play SNA. Or LA Woman. They already play Led Zeppelin it's pretty cool. USC played NIN at the Rose Bowl, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZFsGcH9mSJw. At the ND game they played the MMB over the speakers, if you want loud. Or pull Superstition out of the back catalog.

And being Ann Arbor, they got no excuse not playing Black Sabbath's Sweet Leaf at least twice each game.

I thought about this Board, in the First Quarter of the SDSU game.  I was looking diagonally across the field, at the student sections; thinking about all of the people who see the students as models for standing up, and making noise.  And several minutes into the Frist Quarter, the student sections were still about 1/3 empty.  I should have taken a cellphone picture, of the action on the field, the scoreboard, and all of the empty rows in the student section.

I like it and think that it creates a crazy game time atmosphere but what it all boils down to is the players. They seem to react and get pumped during the important times that it is played and I think it is gonna be up to them and the coaches on when and how it's used. As long as it helps them in some way why should anyone else give a damn.

You seriously think the players need 7 Nation Army to be adequately hyped up for a game?

That's the stupidest thing anyone's said yet on this thread.

I'd think the tradition of 132 years of Michigan football, 42 B10 Championships, and beating Ohio is motivation enough.

Brady Hoke, for one, would agree since he opens every team meeting with that, NOT 7 Nation Army.

This is an inflammatory thread, so why not post some inflammatory items? :)

Today's suggestion for piped-in music:

The band could play that one! Forgive Jasper -- he's old. (But he does like SNA.)

Now for the inflammatory part ...

I'm very fond of our band, but I'd like to see it move away from the standard Midwestern quasi-military (and somewhat dorky, IMO) look and toward something like Stanford's operation (which, admittedly, is very overrated, along with the tree mascot).

On an earlier thread before the season started, people were knocking the song because they blast it in the horseshoe fifty times a game like it's their unofficial anthem?? Now people want it, i cant keep up with all this? I don't care either way, they could have dueling flutes and I wouldn't mind.

Turned over to Pitt-ND at perfect time.  Kelly was mad!

It's somebodys elses job to choose the music.   You can probably send your application into the Athletic department.

The sentiment of the OP is fine, the manner is dumb.

7NA was overplayed today.  Most of us can probably agree on that.  It seemed like it wasn't going anything at all to get the crowd into it, especially when played in the first quarter.

The reality is this: The student section will sing/dance to anything.  7NA, Journey, the MMB, anything.  The question is whether or not the AD wants to try to be unique in this regard or is just going to go with what they know is done at every other stadium in the nation.  So far, the latter.

I would like to see it saved for later in games if they're are insistent on it.

The other reality is that the students/fans are into the game when it is worth being into.  That's the bigger issue.  If you want a better game day atmosphere, stop scheduling EMU and baby seals.  The atmosphere was electric in '04 without any piped in music.  It's all about the game and winning.

I'm sorry, I was at that game in '04, and the crowd was hardly electric.  I've got to call bullspit here.  I'm not going to break down all the psychology for you, but piped in music works.  People are less self-conscious about their own cheering when ambient noise is elevated.  I dont care if they have to pump spice girls over the sound system--If SDSU's quarterback cannot make adjustments at the line, spice up my freaking life.  If SDSU's offensive line has to look at the centers hands(as opposed to the defensive line) to know when the ball has been snapped, go ahead and get with my friends.  You can take your tradition of sitting on your hands, you can shine it up real nice, turn it sideways...

Fair enough on MSU '04 - I was a high schooler watching from my living room.

I also could have used Penn State '06, which I was there for and was rocking.

Please don't tell me to get off my hands.  I'm the person detests 7NA because what used to be a constant scream from my friends' lungs is now a humming to a tune that gets grossly quiet at times. I'm screaming throughout the song, not just the loud notes.

On the positive side, it seems they cut 7NA at the huddle break which let people stop humming and just scream.  I think that's the best way to make it loud if you're going to use it.  I just wish they'd find other songs to include so we don't turn into PSU.
