Pete Carroll to Seattle?

Submitted by MrVociferous on
Well here's a rumor for you...it looks like the Seahawks are going after Pete Carroll and that Carroll is interested in the job. That would be one hell of a shakeup in college football and the world of recruiting. This is all according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN

the NCAA will soon find the wherewithal to truly drop the hammer on USC. In fact, I wouldn't be at all surprised if the real truth is that Carroll fears the hammer is going to fall regardless, and he wants to book before it does. He strikes me as a man who will not stick around to take the medicine.

Yep. Get out of town before the storm hits. Given that Kiffen and Sark are relatively new at Tennessee and Washington, and less likely to leave their programs, where would USC go to replace Carroll? Jim Harbaugh? Norm Chow?

I completely agree. This reeks somewhat of Calipari and other coaches who get to move on, scot-free, and leave behind a trail of sanctions. If he leaves, I have to believe the biggest reason is imprending ban-hammer.

I can't believe PC would want to jump back to the NFL after the debacle known as the 1997-1999 NE Patriots. Could this make Oregon the new PAC-10 powerhouse?

Tressel to USC? He'd clean that place up. It would be weird at first to see the Sweater Vest stalking the sidelines at the Coliseum, but I could get used to the sight. I would not place too much stock in any of this, by the way. Every off season there is a "Carroll to the NFL" rumor, and nothing ever comes of it.

It sounds good to me. I said on another thread (that was discussing teams and investigations) that the NCAA would never investigate USC until after Carroll left. Perhaps I had it a little wrong and they are actually going to force his hand by actually doing an investigation now, rather than waiting for him to leave.

with no PC at USC and sanctions abound I wouldn't call Oregon the new powerhouse of the pac 10. don't forget about the direction stanford is going. the way i see it. This will make the Rose Bowl the Big Ten's new stomping ground

Time to git, while the gittin's good. I lived in Seattle 20 years ago, as the Microsoft-based population boom was just taking off. At the time, native Washingtonians complained about the influx of Southern Californians, who were bringing all their problems and inflating property values to unreasonable levels. Welcome Steve Sarkasian and, now, Pete Carroll.

One of these days I'm going to go on an epic northern trip. I really want to go up to Alaska to catch those barn door halibuts. Do you know any websites that have information on BC fishing and guides?

I'll believe the Carroll to the NFL rumors a few months after it actually happens. Every year somebody sniffs around, he listens so the folks at SC remember he's in high demand, and then he stays.

I do not see why he would want to leave. He can make a competitive salary at USC and is under a lot less pressure there. He might be showing interest to get some more incentives from his current job.

same reason spurrier left his gig at florida. just like players, coaches want to make it to the highest level. sneaky pete probably thinks he is a better coach than his last go around. not to mention he's getting close to 60 and figures this is his last shot at the pro's. he can sign a big time contract and retire after this stint with the seahawks, whether it's successful or unsuccessful. then he can go bang that grad student he lives with at some place in malibu.

I am a Pats' fan and remember his time as coach, as well as his explanation for why it ended badly. The situation in Seattle avoids the problems that, in his view, led to his downfall in NE. Carroll replaced Parcells right after the Pats' 1996 Super Bowl season. Even though he went to the playoffs in his first two years, the team's performance kept declining each year. Carroll blamed the player personnel guy, Bobby Grier, for failing to bring in enough talent. There probably was something to that complaint. Carroll said that he wanted player personnel control if he ever went back to the NFL. Seattle does not have a GM, and, if they hire Carroll now, before hiring a GM, Carroll will probably get to decide how much player personnel control he will have and he will influence -- if not dictate -- who the GM will be. Situations like this don't arise in the NFL that often. And when they arise as your program may be on the brink of sanctions . . . dreary winters and Mt. Rainier start to look awfully good.

As a Seahawks fan, I hate this move if it happens. I think Carroll's talents are best suited for the college game (like a Butch Davis or Nick Saban). This has disaster written all over it. Seattle already tried this route with Dennis Erickson and it didn't work. You gotta figure SC is coming after Sarkisian if Carroll leaves. SC would be the only program I could Sark leaving for. Basically, this could ruin 2 of the teams in Seattle. Thanks a lot Paul Allen.
