Personal Story to Verify Harbaugh to Michigan
I had a little encounter today that, to me, says Harbaugh to Michigan is happening.
So, I am from Youngstown, OH. This morning, I went to my gym for a little early morning workout, and another member of my gym is the father of Chris Durkin (the QB who was committed to MSU, flipped to VT, is a freshman there now). This is significant because they are close cousins with D.J. Durkin. I know Chris' father a little bit (not saying his name for privacy reasons), and saw him there this morning. We were talking a little bit, and asked about my freshman year at Michigan. It then turned into a conversation about Michigan football, and he said he would starting rooting for Michigan football next season (after giving me shit for wearing Michigan shirts in the past). I asked why, and he said he has a cousin who would be coaching there next season, and when I asked if it was D.J. Durkin, he said it was.
Conversation stopped there, but basically we can infer from this that Harbuagh is coming, and D.J. Durkin knows it and will be joining him.

Yes please!

I just want this to be official. Sick of the speculation

Only an 80% chance of Harbaugh?!?!
December 26th, 2014 at 11:52 AM ^
By the Weather Channel's standards, that's as good as a guarantee. Have you ever seen it NOT rain on an 80% chance of rain day?
December 26th, 2014 at 12:02 PM ^
Yes, roughly 20% of the time. Rain predictions have gotten really good.
Nate Silver's The Signal and the Noise has a cool chapter on that topic.
December 26th, 2014 at 12:03 PM ^
As a lifeguard who prayed for rain every day, I disagree entirely
December 26th, 2014 at 2:08 PM ^
the way the weather forecast works as far as % chance of rain works is as follows: if there is any chance (in this case 80%) the percentage reflects the amount of the forecast area will receive rain therefore if it's 80% chance it means that there is a 100% chance of rain occurring but only 80% chance it will happen where you are...much like it's a 100% chance that Jim harbaugh will coach next year but currently will only coach 80% of Michigan's games
December 26th, 2014 at 12:03 PM ^
The European model -- much more accurate for winter weather (and head coaches) -- has chance of Harbaugh at 95%.
December 26th, 2014 at 12:17 PM ^
I think that's an 80% chance of wet harbaugh. Hopefully those are happy tears.
December 26th, 2014 at 11:51 AM ^
Shouldn't it be up to 85% today?

I love how things turn sunny after Harbaugh day!

This picture needs to be the new MgoBlog banner, at least for the next week.

You could be making shit up but I don't care. Welcome Harbaugh!

Aren't parents' names usually on the profile of players on the University's athletic website?
December 26th, 2014 at 11:47 AM ^
Yeah, this isn't the most secure anonymization...

Not sure. If people really wanted to find out the name, I'm sure they could, but I wanted to give this at least a little bit of privacy.
December 26th, 2014 at 12:06 PM ^
I think you should rethink your privacy policy.

I've already figured out his last lname is Durkin.
Half way to figuring out your source!

This is positive therefore it is real.

said Durkins family has no say, its all on Jim to decide....had to.
December 26th, 2014 at 11:54 AM ^
Yeah but if Durkin's family knows they have a cousin coaching in AA next year then we can infer who the head coach is.

Confirmation by a thousand cuts.
There have been so many confirmations from so many different and even odd-ball angles at this point, that you can pretty much be assured that it is a done deal.
Not "done deal but you never know, flaky things can happen" or "done deal as long as the Raiders don't make a Godfather offer", but just straight out done deal.
He's coming.
I've already cleared my calendar for a Monday announcement and a Tuesday halftime speech at the Illinois game.

if we go down in flames, so be it.
December 26th, 2014 at 12:41 PM ^
I was an initial skeptic (I mean, who wouldn't be . . . a guy that coached in 3 NFC Championship games and the Superbowl over the last 4 years is going to walk away from that and go coach at 5-7 Michigan? Yeah, right. Tinfoil much?)
But now I'm all in. I'm not convinced by any one thing, but by the sheer level of independent confirmation by all kinds of disparate sources, many of whom don't generally agree or even like each other.
December 26th, 2014 at 1:29 PM ^
This coach hire is unique in the length of time the parties have needed to keep it quiet--probably because college teams usually aren't in the position of hiring NFL guys from teams with playoff chances in December. Most coaching hires take a few days or at most a couple weeks, which really limits the opportunity for little anecdotes like this one to occur and then leak out into the public domain.
December 26th, 2014 at 2:27 PM ^
And I wasn't sure until the abundance of posts like this lately and to read your interpretation of it. "It's happening" has taken on more than just a life of its own... It's become a part of Michigan football history.
Go Blue!!

As a fanbase we've been punched in the dong so much our collective strength is legend.
I'm in on the optimism.

"This is significant because they are close cousins with D.J. Durkin."
Is a close cousin a higher rank than a first or second cousin?
December 26th, 2014 at 11:56 AM ^
It is possible to have cousins you never see or talk to (example: any of my 12 cousins I see once a decade despite being first cousins). Thus, saying "close" Is a way of stating relationship status that is not guaranteed

Why do these conversations always seem to take place a they gym? Seems odd.
December 26th, 2014 at 11:52 AM ^
Yes. Yes they are.

Because dudes that work out know shit.
December 26th, 2014 at 12:20 PM ^
I guess. If Brian asked me to write a searchbits, I would have to decline on account of I don't currently have a gym membership, and therefore am not privy to any inside info.

Because when you're feeling your muscles break down and your joints creak, that's when you let your guard down. I guess.
