Personal foul at end of Purdue game.

Submitted by mooseman on
At the end of the Purdue game, after the clock ran out, a Purdue lineman hit a NIU player who was on the ground in what was a very late hit that appeared to be an intent to injure. He was given a personal foul (meaningless given circumstance). If Purdue does not take action, does the Big Ten step in again or is there something about a punch (no matter how weak) that causes them to act. I think the Purdue incident was more likely to cause an injury. I think it will be interesting to see.

Saw that and thought the exact same thing. If the B10 doesn't step in it makes the Mouton suspension look ridiculous and that they were catering to Charlie in the wake of Oregon/Boise. They have set a precedent that is going to be hell living up to in terms of Big 10 discipline. That being said, if RichRod would have acknowledged it and stated that it was being handled in-house I don't think the B10 would have stepped in. Regardless, the conference has now established conduct guidelines for acceptable on the field behavior that would ultimately make them look hypocritical.

Talked specifically about this in his postgame press conference. He said Michigan will be watching each B10 game to see if similar things to the Mouton punch happen and how they are punished.

Are all of you blind? He was clearly trying to punch out the ball. Obviously it was late and stupid, but it was in no way an "intent to injure". Watch it again before you spew conjecture.

I guess it's just a matter of perception? Unfortunately I don't have a way of going back to look at it now, but from the replays I saw when it was happening, here's what I saw: NIU guy gets the ball and goes to the ground with the ball tucked in his left arm. PU guy jumps towards him (late and in vain, this I agree with) and attempts the punch the ball out with an uppercut motion. His elbow comes in contact with the NIU guy's side, true, but to my eyes the energy of the blow was located in the fist's futile effort to dislodge the ball. Each time I saw the replay, this was the impression that I got. I saw no malice, just frustration, sort of like a defender knocking the ball out of the hands of someone who has just scored. In conclusion, I don't think he led with the elbow. I think he led with the fist in a punching motion. If you can find a replay, I'm open to being wrong. Just don't think I am from what I remember seeing.

Step 1-watch the replay again. Step 2-notice that the NIU player was on the ground, the play was clearly over and THE BALL WAS IN HIS OTHER FUCKING HAND! Step 3-experience the revelation that you need to pull your head out of your ass. I really don't think its that big of a deal but your don't need to be a douche.

Alright, clearly someone needs to find the replay so we can all watch this again. I never said it wasn't late or stupid. I just said that he was trying to punch the ball out. I disagree that the ball was in his other hand. However, this is all based on memory from the replays that we saw. Maybe my memory is failing me. Maybe yours is. Either way, this only goes to prove how unreliable witnesses can be in the courtroom. Two people can see the same thing and describe it completely differently.

The Big Ten Network went to it after the UM game so I have it on DVR. Unfortunately, I may not be the guy to get it from that black box to this one. However, since you invited me to watch it again, I did. I assure you that the ball was in the NIU players right hand which was closer to the ground. The Purdue player came at him for the other side. I agree--stupid, late and out of frustration. I can't say I know what his intent was but it certainly was not to knock the ball loose. We are making too much of this but I just think it will be interesting to see the response to it.

i can't stand people who take their anger out on innocent people. i think if you're gonna punch somebody it should be for a good reason. I didn't mind when the oregon rb hit the boise st dt because he was asking for it by smack talking, i thought the guy from boise st should have been suspended for the year because smack talk is so immature. Anyway, the guy from purdue should at least get one game if not more.

I was at this game. The NIU guy was down for several minutes before eventually getting up, which probably wasn't on the TV broadcast. We tailgated right next to the parents of NIU's QB. He really wanted to go to Purdue and was recruited but dropped eventually, and he ended up at NIU, probably was pretty damn cool for him to end up playing in West Lafayette and winning the game.
