Permanent AD Candidate Emerging

Submitted by DrMantisToboggan on

My people are saying Hackett is going to work on passing the reigns to Warde Manuel after the Nike deal is announced.

My source is the same as my apparell deal info (which should be announced any time on or after 7/1), someone who works closely with Jim Hackett, and someone I trust until something he tells me proves to not be accurate.

If it's true Hackett will probably ride off into the sunset with an approval rating that rivals Bo. With only 8ish months on the job so far he has hired the prodigal son and returned us to Nike (which seems to be the heavily preferred brand amongst athletes and coaches and slightly preferred amongst fans). Though probably a result of his first action, he has also revived football season ticket sales and the waiting list.

My source didn't give me a timeline, just that once the bow is tied on our apparell contract, Jim will want to set the wheels for Warde in motion.

Sorry if this is too much speculation and grounds for negging.

Hackett doesn't want to do this job for very long and wants to get back to the retirement he's earned.  So the fact he is doing a great job now is moot.  Bringing in someone permanent now makes a lot of sense.  The choice of Manuel is interesting, but not completely surprising.  You could argue there are other candidates that are more seasoned in higher profile jobs.  But on the other hand, Manuel's graduating from U-M  and playing here are big pluses.  In the end, I'll defer to Hackett and Schlissel.  If they think he's the best guy for the job, so be it.

Either you are DOTMAN on the premium Scout boards or you're posting premium info here since this was posted not that long ago today.

I know of "DOTMAN", I actually had a convo on scout with him a while ago about Nike. I think our sources are either coworkers or the same person, although he has way more than my one, because we have the same bird in our ear about the apparell.

I see the thread on scout now, I guess news just gets around at the same rate when it is coming from the same office? I dunno.

I get that. Luckily for me I'm not all that concerned about the reputation of my anonymous internet personas. I just share what I can when my buddy texts me cool things.

If people like it, good. If not, well I've learned to take a neg.

I hope your username alludes to Duke. I have a few Duke alums in the family and it's cool to see other people who can find a way to be both Michigan and Duke fans after the Fab 5.

In regards to the verity of my posts, glad you believe me. If I knew better how to add pictures in comments I could probably throw a picture on here that would speak to my credentials. I'm just not very technologically inclined and learning how to do so has never been worth the effort to me.

"Given the high profile of this site I don't see why people think it's so completely inconceivable that people with actual sources would post things on scout and rivals but not here."

That's not the worry. Given the high profile of this site, can't you also see why some people who are just talking out their ass would like to be worshipped as some news-breaking inside source? Not saying that's the case with this guy, but I don't know either way. I'm not aware of him posting anything here before that had inside info like this. There was a guy last season saying stuff about the team, I think something about playbooks, that a bunch of people immediately took as gospel. He posted other stuff as well and I'm pretty sure it turned out he was full of it.

I never know what to make of him.

He seemed fairly plugged in during that Coaching Search.

Everything since has seemed to be just reposting pretty well circulated info and speculating to arouse hype. So who knows how much you can actually trust a guy who spells Gregg with 3 G's

I have heard similar things on both fronts, but I was not aware of any timeline regarding Warde. So, thanks for that nugget. I know some of Warde's extended family. They stay in the same hotel as we do on game weekends.Hackett has been a blessing! Personally, I wish he would stay, but I know he wants to retire.

If this is all true, then Hackett will basically leave having hit for the cycle and thrown a no-hitter in the same game.

Of course, if you are not a fan of Nike clothing you'll probably start 50 threads around here condemning him to hell.  But for the rest of us, he's been a great stopgap after the Brandon debacle.

I couldn't care less which supplier we go with although I hope all the people pro Nike are willing to pay a little more for tickets if the gap in dollars from the deal is in the millions of dollars.

As others have said Hackett stepped in and has probably stopped our athletic department from going to a dark place.

Students, alumni, and fans can only be expected to hold on for so long without results.

I wrote a long post on this awhile back, Manuel would be my choice if we went with Michigan ties. Greg Byrne at Arizona would be my choice if we wanted someone completely away from the UofM family.

Manuel is a very good AD, an awesome man, I've had the pleasure of meeting with him on a number of occasions.

I'll take Harbaugh, a record breaking Nike contract, and Manuel in a heartbeat.

I just watched Manuel get honored as one of the ADs of the Year a couple weeks ago when I was at NACDA.

I remember a national reporter speaking of the disarray of Michigan football because we had a furniture executive running the department. Ended of being one of the best turnarounds for the Michigan program. I love Jim Hackett and I am not alone.

I don't know what "Mockingly" is, but no, he's making reference to one of the most famous and disgusting quotes by one of the most famous and disgusting racists ever, George Wallace, who ran for president on: "segregation now, segregation tomorrow, segregation forever"

Not very appropriate at all, especially to assocate Hackett with that when he's about to hire a black man to be the athletic director!
