That Jabrill is going pro.

Make that report false, and I'm a happy camper!  I have wondered--based on things Jabrill himself has recently said--whether this might be a harder decision than most people are making it out to be.

I hope Jabrill does whatever he decides is in his own best interest--but selfishly, I hope that best interest includes returning to don the winged helmet and win the Heisman!

One thing Jabrill has shown over the course of his career is that he is goal oriented. He sets goals and does his best to achieve them. One thing he said during his recruitment and after committing to UM was that he wanted to win the Heisman like Woodson did. Perhaps he really wants to achieve that goal. One thing is for sure...the number of blow hards on this board that say he is definitely gone or definitely saying aren't going to make a bit of difference and we'll all know what he chooses before long.

"Funny how I haven't made any decisions on my future. This is a complete false report"

"This is going to be one of the hardest decisions in my life. If you haven't heard anything from the UofM or myself, it's FALSE. Thank You"

Not really, he just probably hasn't decided yet.  My guess is that he was planning on leaving and had an agent lined up but not getting to play in the bowl game has left a bad taste in his mouth and he feels like he has unfinished business.  So he will probably give it this week to let the emotions die down and will probably leave in the end.

That's how you get a report like this, agent is pretty sure its a done deal and it gets leaked, something from the outside changes (injury not allowing him to play last game) and the decision is put on hold.

This is my take as well. He didn't look ready to make a true decision in his post-game interviews. The guy was broken up. Glad he's taking his time to make his decision - no need to rush it until you know for sure what you want to do. He already stated he had an insurance policy set up for this year, so if he does decide on coming back then you know that will be the case again.

Nah, he probably just wants to control the message and is annoyed this came out. The report is probably correct; but also, he probably wants to be able to have the chance to let family and friends know, let coaches/teammates know, finalize agent decision and sign contract, plan for his training program pre-draft, and be able to make his own announcement rather than having some stranger leak info on Twitter. Can't blame him for that. He's ghost.

I will never understand how people who aren't close to the situation unequivocally tell others (who also don't know) what's going to happen. It happens all the time. Happened with Harbaugh, and everyone was wrong. You would think eventually people would learn, but here we are.
Jabrill himself is saying he hasn't decided. Why do people feel the need to prognosticate?

SeattleWolverine

I might be wrong and I'm certainly not close to the situation.

You got me, it's a random message board post and truth be told, no one really gives a shit what you or I have to say, it's just discussion for our own entertainment. Anyway, guilty, I don't parse all of my message board statements with the appropriate equivocations. I don't even spell check or proofread for grammar and on occcasion I use profanity too. What can I say? I'm a terrible person.

Let me rephase, "It is my opinion that Peppers will probably declare for the draft and the likely purpose of this denial is to maintain control over the timing and content of the dissemenation of his decision. My assumption that he plans to leave is based on his growth as a player, the significant level of awards, recognition and personal achievement at the college level earned this year, his status as a project 1st round pick with the limited potential improvements in his draft stock if he stays, the rebuilding of the defense in 2017, and numerous unsubstantiated rumors regarding his activities of late such as interviewing agents etc. While there are exceptions, historical precedent for similar players indicates a high probability of departure."

I did note your statement that, "Jabrill himself is saying he hasn't decided." You're not really naive enough that you take what people say to the media at face value as the actual truth and whole truth are you?

I dont think he would bother tweeting this if he was pretty sure that he was leaving, but the most likely scenario is that he is telling the truth and simply  hasn't made up his mind yet either way.

I still think that leaving is the smart thing to do (for his sake) and would be surprised if it does not end up that way in the end.

And considering what happened to Butt, Clark, and Newsome (just to pick three teammates), it would be totally understandable if he left. If he does return, I hope he has a tremendous insurance policy.

As the Backstreet Boys once said, "Quit playing games with my heart."

I just want to accept the fact that he's gone, but Jabrill won't let me.

I'm glad to see this even if he does in fact leave.. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if his injury gave him second thoughts to what could have been an already-made decision to go pro. You could tell it hurt him to not play in what could have been his final game for UM. He loves the school no doubt. No matter what he decides, he's been one of my all-time favorite players to watch. Too few memories, but the few that I have I will most definitely remember. His passion for the game is awesome to see.

This is wierd. My only guess is that this kid is what we think he is...and that's a kid who genuinely loves Michigan. He is the shining star we've coveted for a long time and I think he is torn. Head says go make millions. Heart says go get paid. I'm sure his family is on board with his head. If he is getting feedback from NFL advisors that he is a top 3 SAFETY then him leaving makes sense. That would likely put him in the 1st round. I have a gut feeling that there is mixed reviews as to his NFL projection and he is listed bigger than he actually is. He is the size of many NFL corners. His most dynamic projection may be on offense to be honest. It would be nice to have him back at safety for another year to prepare him for the league but money talks. The worst thing would be for him to either jump this year and struggle at a position he hasn't played in a year or come back and get hurt trying to cement his Michigan legacy. Normally it wouldn't even be a decision but I think "Michigan Legacy" means something to this kid. I pray that whatever he decides is best for him and he finds his ceiling both financially and as a player. In my humble and non-professional opinion I think another year at safety in the B1G will prepare him to be an impact player in the league. But money talks and he owes us nothing.

You could see it in his face in the interview after the Orange Bowl. He LOVES Michigan and wants nothing more than to win a Championship (Big Ten and National) for this University. He was devestated to not be on the field with his teammates in that game.

I also agree with your analysis of his NFL prospects. I am not sure what position he would play in the NFL. He is clearly the most athletic player in the draft, but he is caught somewhere between Safety and LB.

He clearly has a very difficult decision to make just as he states in his tweet.

Have you heard what some scouts have said about his comparison to Malik Hooker? Mat Miller said they would take Hooker and it's not even close. For an NFL safety, it's hard to predict their impact if their lack of interceptions are as questionable as their coverage skills. At an NFL level, I tend to agree. That's a good reason for Jabrill to return, for the sake of development, and, with a more dynamic offense next season, to determine an actual position.

ak47

January 3rd, 2017 at 1:57 PM ^

Hooker has shown the ability to be a pretty elite ballhawking free safety.  Peppers is an elite athlete but hasn't truly elite skills at any one position yet.  His coverage skills are still somewhat in question and he is too small to play lb in the NFL, I think lack of a gauranteed position could potentially hurt his draft stock.  If he hears he is dropping back to the middle of the first round you could certainly make an argument that he should come back on the condition that he gets to play safety most snaps as a way to get back into the top 10 by having a good year in a defined nfl position.

WeimyWoodson

January 3rd, 2017 at 2:06 PM ^

and Peppers decided to come back to "improve his draft stock" he would have to have a guarentee that next season he is going to play saftey and not the viper role.  It would make zero sense for him to come back to improve his safety skills and then never play the position.

It would be strange knowing how well he can play the viper role watching someone else play it while Peppers would be back to saftey.  All in all if he came back it would have to be to improve skills at his draftable position and have him play that all season, not move him around, despite the viper role being what's best for the team with his talents.

Idk. It wouldn't be a bad look to throw Metellus or maybe Hudson in the Viper role and Peppers at Safety with Kinnel. Clark and Long/Hill/Watson at CB would be a legit defensive backfield.

Metellus, McCray, and Bush/Furbush would be a pretty legit linebacking corp though unproven

and Gary Mone Hurst and Winovich is a nasty Dline.

Throw in some freshman or RS depth and that has the potential to be a really good defense.

As the son of two emmy-award winning broadcast journalists, I was taught from a very young age that in life AND in journalism that "it's important to get it first; but most important to first get it right".

How in the hell can legimiate "sources of information" (Forbes and other individuals, if you can even call them that due to their constant anonymity) spew information without first making sure they've got it right?

Wow.
