An excerpt. The cut off line at top is about Hoke. It was about the big programs in the Big Ten East letting the past just be the past. I thought it demonstrative of the editorial sentiment in the book: these are the people who are embarrassed by Jay Paterno and the 409ers.

perhaps a unique situation. Are you talking about a very small printing or is the perception that the majority of Penn State fans have their heads up their ass (no pun intented) incorrect?

It seems obvious that the power is with the latter group.

It depends what group of fans and how intense their level of caring is. LinebackerU used to be their closest thing to MGoBlog but the primaries from that have retired and their editor writes just this every year and otherwise does his normal job. Blackshoediaries on SBNation is now in control of the once-junior members, though Cari and Jared are among the best editors SBNation has on any of their team sites.

That portion--the kind who would read MGoBlog if it was Michigan fans we're talking about--are represented now by BSD and they agree with the "it's in the past" sentiment. It's not like it's that hard for good people to say "Child rape going on inside the program is inexcusable and they had a moral responsibility to report that." The position is more nuanced because they're in the thick of it--they saw the university try everything it could to put the damage everywhere but on itself. Regarding the NCAA, they don't argue whether it was deserved, but correctly point out the NCAA was grandstanding, and was trying to let Tim Beckman et al. do the damage it wouldn't by picking off the roster. Emmert expected half the team to transfer.

The "409s" as they call them--the group Jay Paterno is the de facto face of now--are met with nothing but contempt, the way we talk about the Rivals boards who bag on Rodriguez and think Harbaugh is going to go 12-0 this year because he whips the players harder, blah blah. I bet you interact with 409s more than the BSD crew because the 409s are active as shit and annoying as shit. Kinda like how everyone on Facebook has political opinions but you always seem to find the nutters.

Any time I am reminded of Penn State football still existing as a money-making industry, I get upset. I wish the program just got wiped from the face of the Earth. It should have AT LEAST been removed from the Big Ten. Just awful leadership in college sports today.

RK - I COMPLETELY agree with you and upvote!  I had posted the following comment before, but it once again fits here.

(They are) a huge stain that will never go away.  This is way beyod SEC bagmen and free tattoos, this has to do with a TOTAL lack of moral compass, TOTAL lack of contrition and just plain blind and delusional are the majority of that fan base and YES I am ashamed that they are part of this conference, so I will never welcome those degenerates.

Ditto... the PSU backers in denial is what perpetuates this.  Just like Little Brother up in East Lansing -- don't like your reputation, then quit behaving in a manner which makes it credible.

That school is dead for me and if JD had any stones whatsoever, he would have kicked those child molesting enablers out of the conference.

I thought they should have been given the death penalty for one year.  I'm sure there were/are plenty of good people associated with that program, so to permanently destroy it would be too much.  But a year without football would have driven home the point to everyone that football is not bigger than the safety of children.  After that they could have rebuilt, albeit with a stigma that would take some time to dissipate.

Sorry for being so blunt ......... but given my previous interactions with you, I don't particularly want to interact with you at all.

And that's perfectly fair if you don't give a damn about MY thoughts.

At the least, I try my best to be respectful here.  I realize that I am a guest and visitor.

End of discussion from my POV.

Can't wait for this game. It will be my first trip to Happy Valley. My wife's cousin is a PSU alum and she hooked me up with tickets. Going with my dad, uncle, and father in law. Sitting in section EGU, row 65. Who else is making the trip?

Their fans are great, unless you get too loud cheering for your team. Then you get dirty looks, comments, or snowballs.
The stadium looks like a high school stadium if it took 1980's wrestler amounts of steroids. It's just steel beams on top of steel beams, man.
Super loud.
Suuuuuper loud.
Also plan on getting in earlier than you think you need to. The section and letters you have on your ticket are pretty much nonsensical.
Also, it's Pennsylvania. If you plan on tailgating, don't plan on having level ground. Sideways grills and hot dogs rolling off tables are pretty normal.
But... Yuengling and Iron City beer!

I enjoy reading your work here as regards Michigan (that's why I lurk, I root for Michigan as my second favorite team).

I have a LONG LONG flight from Atlanta to Phoenix tomorrow AM (that I am not particularly looking forward to) ----- so I will order this for the Kindle as reading material.  This should make the flight go better!!

(and believe me, I'm one of those PSU fans who is simply tired of the JoeBots.  But that is what it is)

Franklin is a lot of things but his one weakness appears to be he is not at all a gamer. Brady Hoke gave him a free Hail Mary yes, but he wasted a timeout in the closing seconds to save two yards before taking a safety.

interestingly, franklin's very open about his admiration for analytics etc (and very cagey about talking specifics with respect to how his staff uses them)...he even showed up as a panelist at the sloan conference this past spring.

that said, i wasn't thrilled with a lot of the decisions they made during games last year. so yes, there appears to be some disconnect between what he's preaching and what they're actually doing on the field. i'm willing to give them a pass for last year...but i expect, with a return to a normal depth chart, that those kind of things will improve. but we'll see.

Part of that--and I said this in that roundtable answer I referenced--is there really weren't a lot of good options. Here's the decision tree:

Have Hack throw again!

Waitaminute they know he's throwing every down can we do ANYTHING else to get the pressure off him?

  • Can we run
    /tries run
    No.
  • Can we screen?
    /tries screen
    No.
  • Can we short-pass?
    /tries that.
    No.
  • Can we do those things anyway just so the D isn't sitting against the pass?
    /tries them again.
    /tries passing.
/defense is still sitting on the pass.
    No.
  • Have Hackenberg throw.
    /sack
    /reception (occasionally)
    /sack.
