Penn State Snowflakes: The Defense

Submitted by LSAClassOf2000 on

This will be the repository for your thoughts on the defense and general hot takes regarding the defense for our game against Penn State.

Also, people have asked about it, so if you have rebranding ideas and want to call these threads, something else, I am listening.

There was a flood of freshmen who came in on that last defensive stand and David Long was among them. Also saw Bush, Hill and Metellus. Interestingly I don't believe Khaleke Hudson was out there.

I'm very bummed about Clark. His body language was not good. I think it's a significant injury. Hopefully the freshman Long can step up and they have no drop off with him.

Clark was having a very good year. Dammmmmitttt!!!!

Much respect to Barkley--Franklin put it all on him in the 2nd half, and he got the crap kicked out of him even as he got his yards. Noticed Harbaugh made a point of shaking his hand before leaving the field.

And yeah, poor Clark. Heal up quick!

One area for need of improvement is still the RB out of the backfield. Barkley killed the D 4-5x when he was outside with the LB chasing. Way too much room. LB got crushed on the one play and another Corner bit hard and couldn't recover. But this has Been an issue all year. I hope Brown corrects this at some point.

At one point Barkley had 110 yards and the rest of PSU had 10. He got to the outside 4-5x and did a lot of damage. The 40y run being the worst. Just like the 78y off tackle run during UCF. Just saying it's still an issue.

When he was even or next to the QB - he was probably going to get the ball - McSorley didn't really make himself a running threat.

When he was not the ball carrier he was a dangerous receiver on a wheel route, flares or screens. He was covered by LB on some plays and they couldn't stay with him except for the first few seconds. On some plays, Peppers took him.

Basically the defense ended up keying on him.

PSU was totally outplayed and simply didn't have any hopes. Hard to imagine but the game was really over after the first quarter.

GREAT WIN!

Im not expecting a blow out like the at all. But I do think that we can handle Wisconson pretty easily..... I think its a real good match up for us and especially our defence

Not as impressive as Durkin's for my money but they're decent enough. And yes I know Durkin's got roughed up a few times but that defense has a number of important injuries.

I love the pressure this year.  We almost killed that QB today.

Dominating, smothering performance by our D-line.

Gedeon looks better than any LB last year.

Peppers is being used much more effectively this year IMO - how many TFL's does he have already?

We're slightly more susceptible to deep balls.  I'll take that in trade for the devastating pressure. Having Lewis back will minimize those issues.

Durkin's style lends itself to dominating lesser opponents. You keep one guy back to mop up and everyone else just goes and wins their 1 on 1 matchup. When the better teams came around, he refused to get that safety involved and we got steamrolled at the point of attack over and over.

Also, this defense so far has had just as many injuries to deal with thus far.

I was a little worried with him being out for the first three games but he looked fine.  Wish he hadn't taken that hit on the kick return from that kicker/battering ram.  At one point Griese said Penn State's best play was to throw it up and hope for pass interference.  I guess if that's your opposition's best hope, you're playing pretty well.

Whoever called Penn St getting yards on thr little shovel pass was a genius. That one play consistently got them yards. They had some success with Barkley on wheels with rub routes and WRs running off coverage. Everything else, not so much.
