Path to 1000 wins

Submitted by 1464 on

With Harbaugh on-board and Michigan surpassing Notre Dame in win percentage a few weeks back (and strengthening its lead since), I got bored and decided to look at all-time wins.  Michigan now sits at 932.

Will Harbaugh be here for win number 1000?  Given our current trajectory, we hit that in about late 2022 or early 2023, basically when the youngest kids we're recruiting are into their senior seasons.

Here are the top 9 schools by wins, courtesy of Wikipedia.  Number 10 doesn't deserve mention.

Rank Team Won Lost Tied Pct. [a] Games
1 Michigan 932 331 36 .731 1299
2 Notre Dame 895 319 42 .729 1253
3 Yale 890 369 55 .698 1314
4 Texas 888 356 33 .708 1277
5 Nebraska 885 368 40 .700 1293
6 Ohio State 879 320 53 .723 1252
7 Alabama 869 326 43 .719 1238
8 Oklahoma 863 321 53 .719 1237
9 Harvard 860 385 50 .683 1295

I also found it interesting that our closest competition for best win percentage will not be ND, given that they are staring down a long walk in the CFB desert in the near future.  Bama will fall off a bit in a couple years when Saban returns to whatever robot factory that created him.  Oklahoma seems destined to stay good but not great.  Texas is still in a freefall.  So it looks like OSU and Michigan are poised to battle for this for a few years.

It's not that I have a hard time seeing us lose this game, it's that I have a hard time finding a way Sparty makes it close. Even if they play "their best game of the year," I feel it wouldn't be good enough to keep it within 20 points.

I'm scared that I am thinking that. Why am I scared?

Do we always have to resort to coach speak?  Let me revise my OP, then:

Our focus is always on today.  On ourselves.  How to make those changes to make Michigan a better football team.  It's our job as fans to make sure everyone pulls in the same direction.

Nose down, chin up, head on a swivel.

We're riding on the backs of generations of greats who have walked these halls before us.  Mighty men who tamed the down-in-front crowd for years.  Fought back against the noodle.  Brought us to where we are now.  Now, I'm not sure if we have 90 wins or 900.  All I know is that we must do everything we can to honor those who came before us.  If we work hard, let loose, and show up early, we may just have a chance.  But that all starts today.

So we're gonna go out there Saturday, in front of dozens of players.  And we're gonna ALTERNATE sitting and standing!  We're gonna SHAKE SOME KEYS!  We're gonna chant things and do half assed waves.  Some of us may get kicked out for public drunkness.  Others may spill our nachos.  But the key here - is that we learn from that.  Improve.  Survive.  Advance.

Why the fuck are you worried about Saturday?  You have no influence on Saturday.  Let's... maybe discuss things on a message board designed to discuss said things?  Does.. that make sense?

Yeah man, I got you, I guess I just fail to see the point in projecting 68 wins down the road and looking past this season into an unknown future when we're in the middle of what could be the season of the century as it stands so far. We're at the tail end of a rivalry week where, for the first time in a decade, we're feeling supremely confident in our chances tomorrow.

I could also ask you why you're worried about the future when you have no influence on the future. Heck, if you apply that attitude to everything, why are we even on this site? Nobody here has any influence on what happens on the field.

Although, great speech! I'm certainly going to shake the shit out of my keys and eat some nachos with some extra gusto this weekend.

I think for win #1000, UM should have a massive bash at the Big House. And I don't mean tea and biscuits. I mean 20,000 kegs and live music and disco balls. And strippers...

When I was there in the late 80's there was always people selling jugs of fresh apple cider on the way to the stadium. So we would bring a bottle of vodka, replace some of the cider with vodka, and then carry it in as if it was a jug of cider (which was allowed for some reason)

What about Grand Valley State for win percentage? They will be unstoppable once they rehire coach purple face.

According to the same wikipedia article, Rutgers is the all time leader in losses with 631.

EDIT: my mistake, they are just the losingest program listed on the winningest programs page. Indiana is actually the all time leader with 658.
