Past OSU Coaches: Non-Compliant and Proud of It!

Submitted by MGoAero on

Earle Bruce quote from Columbus Dispatch article:

"Bruce also defended Tressel and said he was trying to protect the players the way former Ohio State coaches would have done.

'I wouldn't turn in players. I would try to help them, and coach (Woody) Hayes did the same thing.'"

Niiiiiiiice.

Also of note:

"Since 2006, the NCAA has sanctioned 27 schools for violating bylaw 10.1, which requires coaches and others to be truthful and forthcoming about possible NCAA violations. Of the 12 coaches involved, only one kept his job. The others either resigned or were fired by their schools."

Would have punched an NCAA investigator...

There is no need to open your mouth on this if you are a former coach. Simply say, I stand behind the program and have no intimate details of the situation at hand...Not, I would have protected cheaters as well.

There has to come a point in your life where you just don't care if ESPN is going to bag on you or you're worried about future employment. Trust me, if I didn't care about potential future employment I'd tell a lot of people what I really think...

(Woody) Hayes, Bruce said, once refused to cooperate with the NCAA after it learned that the coach had given several players $20.

"No coach at Ohio State, and I mean none, has ever done more for the program on and off the field than coach Tressel," Bruce said

--------------

Hayes was handing out twenties, but Tressel has done more for the program?  I wonder how much he is handing out.  Hey Bruce, details please!

That happened in 1956.  Woody helped players get summer jobs with local businesses-real jobs, not fake jobs-and there was an issue with Black players getting paid less than White players.  Woody found out about it and paid the Black players out of his own pocket to make up for the difference.  The NCAA put OSU on a one year probation as a result.

OK, that would make a little more sense.  They probably should have clarified that in the article.  I definitely would like to know that Woody was a stickler about the rules, because otherwise, that might cast doubt on his protégé.

The reaction down here is interesting.  We have a sales department of about 80 people, mostly guys, in their late 20's and early 30's.  Virtually everyone of them is a Buckeye fan of some note.  The mood has gone as follows:

Tuesday: We heard something's coming out.....but my friend's in the AD say it's nothing to worry about.

Wednesday: That might be bad but because Tressel said he did it to protect the players we're pretty sure we'll be ok.

Thursday: This is bad.  Really, really bad.

Friday: ?

I keep reminding them of the name "Ed Martin".  I let them we had a pretty decent run of success in basketball (like them in football) at one time too.

They all have sad faces right now.  I love it.

Speaking of Ed Martin, if that Riffe character gets a lawyer (not local) to file charges on Cicero then we will really see some fireworks as the subpeonas will fly and we will maybe find out what Gee meant when he said this:

Gee said he asked Tressel, "questions none of you (reporters) would dare ask ... to make sure there was no kind of smoking gun."

By omission, it sounds like Cooper might have been the only clean coach at TSIO in the last fifty years.  It's tough for TSIO to beat Michigan when the playing field is level.

A trend I have noticed with past OSU football coaches is that they never actually retire.

John Cooper: Fired

Earl Bruce: Fired

Woody Hayes: Fired

Wes Fesler: Fired

Will Tressel make it 5 in a row?  I would think his track record against us is enough to keep him coaching there until he's as old as Paterno.
