Overview of 2014 Michigan Basketball Recruiting via Sam Webb

Overview of 2014 Michigan Basketball Recruiting via Sam Webb

On today's recruiting roundup, Sam Webb provided a good summary of where Michigan basketball's 2014 recruiting stands following Bates-Diop and Tate committing to OSU. Here's a link to the podcast and an embed:

Sam briefly mentioned the two other prospects who currently have Michigan offers—Devin Booker, a 6-4 shooting guard from Moss Point H.S. in Mississippi, ranked #18 in the country by ESPN, and Trevon Bluiett, a 6-5 small forward from Park Tudor School in Indianapolis, ranked #47 nationally. Sam said that the Wolverines seem really strong with Bluiett.

Two other 2014 prospects seem to be next in line to get a Michigan offer, according to Sam:

  • Vincent Edwards: 6-6 small forward from Middletown H.S. in Ohio. Michigan staff has told him that if he makes it to campus, he'll get an offer.
  • Ricky Doyle: 6-9 power forward out of Bishop Verot H.S. in Fort Myers, Florida. Doyle is looking for a school combining academics and athletics, so Michigan and Duke both have a good shot at him.

Also, here are a couple more names to keep an eye on: Tyler Wideman, a 6-7 PF out of Lake Central H.S., the same school that Glenn Robinson III attended, and Kameron Chatman, a 6-6 small forward from Long Beach Polytechnic in California.

This may all be old news for those who have been following Michigan basketball recruiting closely, but I haven't really been doing so, and I found Sam's rundown useful. More than anything, I think this points out that there are still plenty of other good prospects on Michigan's radar for 2014

Fun fact: Middletown (located between Dayton and Cincy) has also produced such basketball greats as Jerry Lucas (below) and...Jerry Lucas.

I hadn't heard anyone say that before.  My impression was that Indiana was in the drivers' seat.

IU is really crowded in the 2013 class, and they're in on great talent for 2014.  At some point you have to believe that the depth chart will deter a player or two.  Let's hope Blueitt is one of them.

Final Four would be huge for this program.  Despite all that Belein has done in the last few years here at UM, we are apparently still in the back seat when recruiting against Indiana, OSU, and MSU to some degree.  I think a Final Four run this year could change all that.

We nabbed GRIII and Zak Irvin, two of the top prospects out of Indiana, and Irvin had an early IU offer.  We got Derrick Walton from MI, probably the top '13 prospect in Michigan (outside of James Young, i guess), as MSU was about to offer.  In Ohio we got Donnal and are in great shape for Kennard in '15.  If we go up against IU, OSU, and MSU, we are sure to lose some, but right now we're doing great.  Of course, winning always helps.

Had 31 in his first game last night, 24 of them in the first half.

Irvin did have early offers from IU and Purdue. They both offered him, Collin Hartman (IU), Devin Davis (IU), and Basil Smotherman (PU) at nearly the same time, in a first-come first-served sort of way. I bet both IU and PU wishes they would've taken a different approach as Irvin is clearly the best of the 4 small forwards. Davis will be good for IU, but Hartman and especialy Smotherman are big stretches even as spot contributors on their respective teams.

Bluiett is a great player. I coach against his team every year on Christmas break. It'll be nice not having to deal with Yogi Ferrell too this year, but Trevon is great in his own right. I've said for a while now I think he'll end up at Michigan. IU already has one commit in 2014 in SG James Blackmon, and I think they'll take 1 more Indiana kid (JaQuan Lyle) and look out east for big men.

As a coach in Indiana, you want no part of Tyler Wideman.

Also, Purdue fans think they've got Vince Edwards locked up, so nothing would make me happier than Michigan taking him. Painter has swung and missed on so many big recruits lately, it's almost funny. The Zellers, the Plumlees, Chasson Randle, Branden Dawson, Gary Harris, GR 3, Jeremy Hollowell, Bates-Diop, Derek Willis...the list goes on.
