over/under

Submitted by Maize and Luke on

I started thinking about this Sunday but after seeing Jamele's little "we own you" I thought I would see what my fellow mgobloggers think.

Assuming (and it's a big assumption) that Dantonio & Harbaugh are still coaching for the next 10 years how many times will UM beat sparty?  If I set the over/under at 6.5 what will you take?  Personally I'd take the over.  Do the same for OSU and put the over/under at 5.5 I might just avoid this one all together.  But if I had to choose I'd take the under as I can see these two rivals splitting the next 10.

Our rivals are both at their absolute peaks right now. If the situations were reversed and they were talking about how they were about to win 7 of 10 off us (or even 5 of 10) they would be laughed out of the room. We need to prove it before we start talking about any of this stuff.

I actually agree with you and I'm not typically a cart before the horse kind of guy. I started this post as something fun and positive to talk about instead of another "what might have been" post. And I am excited about our future. So with all of the talk about forgetting the past, I thought this would be a way to look at our bright future.

I agree it's fun, and there's obviously nothing wrong with speculation on a message board.  I just think we should all have an awareness of how ridiculous it sounds to those in rival fanbases.

I also think our future is bright, but no matter how great Harbaugh is, we have to recognize that our rivals are playing really good football right now, and it's going to be a fight to take those series back over.  They'll have their time wandering in the desert again eventually.

You're probably right but I think it's also a little late for awareness. I mean have you seen some of the posts lately? /s
And I also don't believe there is a rational, level headed, mature fan base I existence, at least not that I have seen. Though it's probably not a bad idea to strive for that.

The level of a program's success doesn't dictate how they perform in a game that is often determined by plays and calls that never occur in other contests. It is the emotional investment that you place in the outcome of a certain game that determines its value and how you respond over time. Some teams like Michigan are good because that is their historical pretext, culture and tradition.

No matter what is said or written, Michigan State will never, ever, ever catch Michigan in the record book in this rivalry. Never. So, the idea that Michigan is owned during a certain period is a question of trending performance based on many factors including coaching and talent recruitment as well as performance.

Because this game is not the endgame determinant of the season for either team, not like the Ohio State game is, this rivalry is not on the same level as that one. And for MSU, that is as much a motivating factor in their performance against Michigan as whether they are on the same level historically with Michigan.

In this argument, Sparty loves to conflate current performance as the ulitmate hedge against a careeer record which actually bespeaks ownership. But ownership over anything is a relative term, which even Harbaugh acknowledged by calling MSU the bigger program in Michigan prior to this game.

The importance of this game, other than extending the team's winning record, was to reassert the message that Michigan will physically compete at the same level as Sparty and will not be bullied because this has been the result of recent matchups in both score and outcome. Whether that message was sent Saturday is probably not going to be accepted by MSU based on play and result until you actually kick their ass in score and outcome. And that will have to wait yet another year when the ownership question can be reevaluated with gusto.

I would downvote you but it isn't worth the MGoPoint.  I assume you live in a pessimistic state of mind.  I can empathize because I do too.  However, if after watching this Michigan team after watching the last two or three years and you not realize that this head coach and the staff he hand picks will be exceptional, you are not convinceable.  You might be young, mid twenties or less, and not realize the anomaly you have witnessed the last ten years.  Dantonio has a great record against Michigan.  Please take the time to analyze the talent and coaching over the last ten against the talent and coaching of the previous ten.  The comparison will be stark.  Harbaugh is and will field a team that is head and shoulders above the MSU teams.  He had them beat this year. Fluke plays happen but are rare.  Michigan victories will not be. Over the next ten they will be 7-3.  State gets up for this game and an abhorration or two is plausible..

LJ is exactly right. While UM is not in a rebuilding process, we are still below both MSU and OSU. We are closer to MSU than OSU, but starting next year, UM will overtake MSU (that isn't even in question for me). We are only going to get better and MSU is losing some key players who greatly contributed to their success over the past few years.

What Dantonio had with Carr (0-1), RichRod (3-0), and Hoke (1-3) is what Harbaugh will get. He got his win. Harbaugh will probably not get the chance to beat him more than once as Dantonio will probably leave/retire after next season's (a) beat down, or (b) their 5-7 year.

this will shake out like with Pete Carroll at USC.   Which will probably result in a "what's your deal" moment in East Lansing.

It certainly seems to be setting up that way.  Dantonio will probably move along especially with the writing on the wall.

Writing on the wall? Dantonio owns us. He out coached the last 3 Michigan coaches he's faced. It's hard to admit, I get that, but Dantonio is one of the best college football coaches of all time. He's not quitting anything because we hired Jim Harbaugh. Get out of here with that. He'll be licking his chops to beat us again when we bring another new qb, no RB, no outside threat at WR and a paper thin offensive line to east Lansing next year.

Dantonio is the best college football coach of all time? Not even close. He had a few good years. His main accomplishments are beating his rival during their down years, making MSU relevant, winning B1G twice, one shared, win bowl games. That makes someone the best college football of all time? Get outta here.

would have taken a big ten team to more than one Rose Bowl.   Dantonio's accomplishments can be easily rooted in the flux of the U of M program and exploiting the opportunity made available to him as a result of that.  And you're wrong about the last three michigan coaches.  It was only RichRod and Hoke.  Carr outcoached Dantonio, which is saying something because Carr wasn't that creative.

Just like Izzo and the fab five fallout.  Who, btw was almost loured away to the NBA by a whole lot of money and not because of JB.

with respect to what you are saying about a new qb, a paper thin offensive line,  no RB, or outside receiver threat.  I simply don't think anybody has any clue as to what you're talking about.

I was seriously asking.  I looked at the roster this morning and I see that Kalis and Magnuson are both seniors.  I was really asking if they were going to be back due to redshirts because it did not provide that information.

I get that he is a good coach but one of the greatest of all time?  He has a couple of conference titles and a Rose Bowl.  He has not seriously competed for a national championship.  He has been impressive building a program from scratch but State has not dominated the college football landscape.  He took them to 1 BCS bowl game in the entire existence of the BCS bowls and he beat Baylor.  You are really going out on a limb for your buddy here.

I don't mind showing respect to a rival coach, even though Dantonio makes it very hard to appreciate him. Just beating Michigan 7 out of 8 does not make someone a great coach in all of college football. It makes him a great coach between M and MSU in the last eight years. Stop it. He can beat us next 10 years, but he won't be at the level of Saban, Meyer. Harbaugh will be there in a few years. Just watch. Dantonio would not be. You know why? Because he has to compete against Harbaugh and Meyer and he is at MSU.

Dantonio is the 3rd best coach in the Big Ten, after Harbaugh and Meyer.

He's a very good coach.  He did for MSU what Hayden Fry did at Iowa--win big at a place where it is hard, but not impossible (Indiana), to win big.

But he is not on the same level as Harbaugh or Meyer.

And certainly not one of the best of all time.

What last three? He was 0-1 against Carr... Dominated RichRod (3-0) and dominated Hoke (3-1)... He did not dominate Harbaugh... He is 0-1* against Harbaugh. He got two. He won't win against Harbaugh again.

As for this "paper-thin" O-line...? We return 4/5. Glasgow leaves, but I honestly believe Kugler is better. Kugler was injured for the fall camp wasn't he? I thought I had heard/read here that he was pushing Glasgow to where Glasgow was moving back to Guard.

O'Korn is better than Rudock. We all but know this as fact. Harbaugh said something like Rudock is the best QB we have at this time or something... O'Korn will start I'd bet. I expect this team to be significantly better on offense next year, where the defense may take a half step back losing 3 LB's and a Safety.

harder by graduations than Michigan for 2016.

As another poster stated correctly, if MSU's QB were 90% as good as Conner Cook, Michigan would have won by comfortable margin.

MSU loses the guy that has saved them in several games this year.  Without lights out passing by Cook they surely would have lost to Michigan and Rutgers.

Moreover, they are the team that will come into 2016 having to fill a lot more holes on the o-line.

To me, the biggest issue is that Dantonio and his staff got great results while not recruiting at a top 20 level.  Calhoun was a low three-star, as was Cook, etc.  Right now, MSU's recruiting class next year is basically on par with Michigan -- 20 recruits versus 21; 88.11 average rating versus 87.85.  MSU has two DEs ranked in the top 100 on board.  With very good coaching (which I will concede MSU has) and a new level of talent significantly above its historical average, it's hard to see why MSU won't be able to continue competing at the OSU/UM level for the foreseeable future.

(Relatedly, the more troubling takeaway for me from Saturday's game was the line play.  E.g., given the amount of injuries to MSU's OL, I had expected Michigan's DL to generate more of a rush.)

won't fill the major gaps they will suffer from graduations for the 2016 season.  Might show up a couple years later.

Anyway, Dantonio is not JL Smith, so as long as he remains MSU will field a good team.  I just don't think that they are going to win 10 or 11 games every year going forward.  Michigan was an easy win for them for much of the Rod and Hoke earas.  No more.

And I think that 2016 will be their worst year in while.

Some people are just so determined to suck the life/fun out of this board. Serious question: Why in seven hells do you click into a thread just to tell someone to shut up about the subject? If you really have nothing better to do, go hang out on Mlive.
