Matte helmets too!!
Plus matte helmets with nice Maize wings.
My only worry is, if that jersey is for the bowl game, then what was the one for found in the lockerroom?.....
It's possible it was designed/prototyped before Michigan knew their home/road bowl designation.
Only problem is that Michigan is the home team...
I also believe it is fairly common for Adidas to send other prototypes for the team to use/wear in practice (on a regular basis). This is done as a way to test different materials, styles, fittings, and even color combination I'm sure.
I guess unless you count Brian as an old codger, or easlily more than half this blogs readers that often prefer that new uniforms not be debuted every two weeks or so
Haha thats exactly what I was going to say. I love these uniforms. Let all the whining and complain begin. Theres nothing wrong with these for one game.
How about two games (Alabama)? How about three, four, five games (2011 ND, MSU, Sugar Bowl)? At what point do we no longer have the most recognizable and powerful brand in college football?
I usually consider myself pretty progressive on uniform design (for instance, I really like Oregon's assortment), so I don't classify myself as an "old codger." But it feels like we're cashing in our tradition to sell a few one-off jerseys.
I'm not sure we do now, or did years ago (have the most recognizable and powerful brand in college football). Similar to how many fans can't imagine a recruit every wanting to go to another school over THIS IS MICHIGAN FERGODSAKES (TM), many people on this blog wear rose colored (or maize as it may be) glasses when it comes to our uniforms and the overall brand. There are many schools that have history and prestige simlar to Michigan. Notre Dame, Alabama, USC, Texas to name the most prominate. I agree the winged helmet is likely the most famous helmet, but our uniforms are no more recognizable than Penn States or Notre Dames. Everybody needs to relax on the uniform hatred.
Yes, this. I don't think most neutral observes could tell out jerseys from West Virginia's or Cal's without seeing the helmets along with them. Our brand is in the helmet and the block M, not in the lack of piping or whatever people want to believe
Your post is so full of shit I don't know where to begin.
Michigan has the the most recognizable brand in college football in the same universe where the Horror, RichRod, and generally the last 10 years never happened.
Those teams you mentioend are largely absent the entire new uniform trend. And it does not matter one bit whether we have ther #1 or the #10 most recognizable brand in college football--its a very very strong brand and brand name, so messing with it, like if we are any pne of the other 100 schools out there, is dumb.
I agree with you totally... I understand a lot of it is to get the players excited and this "new era" of marketing college athletics ... however, as the post above suggest, is changing the unitforms worth getting lost in all of the "noise"? For someone in there mid-20's I tend to side on tradition and nothing is more recognizable than the block M, maize and blue and of course the winged helmet. Why fix something that isnt broke?!
Has Penn State, Texas, Alabama and USC changed their uniforms 4 or 5 times, in as many years?
when talking about uniforms, i specifcally mentioned penn state and notre dame. penn state added names to the back of their jersey's this year, which in my opinion is a much bigger change than a one or two off unique jersey per year. Notre dame has changed theirs more than we have.
I get not liking the uniforms, i just don't get the massive OMG freakouts that come with them. I watch football and cheer on michigan for the actual games, players and plays. Fashion doesn't play a big role in my fandom.
For the most part, I like Dave Brandon and what he has overseen in his tenure as AD, but cannot believe that which he has wrought unto the UM brand imagery, most noteworthy being our uniforms - these are beyond ugly and bear no relevance whatsoever to the historical Michigan brand.
Standard techniques give standard results.
Awful!! I like that helmet look on other teams, but not on this helmet.
They're Matte, not shiny. And in general, these look like shit. It's the Bama uniform, with some colors flopped. WHYYYYYYYYY
Anybody got the number for Ann Arbor Torch and Pitchfork?
I agree, this stuff is for Cal and WV.
I don't understand this at all. Dave Brandon has been so about the "BRAND" in so many ways. The split M is gone. The Block M is everywhere. Every AD twitter account has the same avatar, Block M with their sport.
He's been extremely uniform, everywhere except for the damn football uniforms!!
This is tradition, history, those uniforms and helmets ARE michigan football. And that he has no qualms about selling to adidas on a semi-weekly basis.
I did the counting below. This is the EIGTH jersey Michigan will have worn in our last 25 football games. We've had a new look every THREE games. Ridiculous.
Big shock, it's ugly. Sell jerseys, make $$.
Dave Brandon doesn't care if it's bad wow (which it is) or good wow (as in at least it doesn't look like the sparty shitstain helmets from last year)
I always hoped we could do better than "at least our helmet is not a shitstain". The issue is, people already own our traditional jerseys, and the only time they buy new ones is when there is a new player they can get. Well, new players come along too slowly, but Adidas can crap one of these jerseys out in a second and DB can sell a stack of them for fat profit even if it looks terrible. People want to be part of the fan experience and for a lot of them it means buying a horrible jersey they have a 50ish% of always relating to a defeat.
Does anyone look at the jersey they bought for the Alabama game and think "Man, this jersey not only looks great, but it reminds me of our awesome game against 'Bama!"
Kinda like the helmet, not too pumped about the jersey.
Looking DAMN good! If Kovacs likes them we all should! Just temporary folks!
Just temporary? Yeah, until the next piss ugly uniform
Like the Matte paint.
Can tolerate the white w/blue shoulder look.
Can't stand the way the numbers look.
EDIT: Also think they should have done blue pants.
Matte helmets are nice.
Whose team sports Nike Pro Combat on those "special days".
I hate our pro-combat jerseys for the Michigan game and I've said that several times here. Wear 'em against Nebraska, or in some bullshit bowl, not for games that matter.
It kinda looks like the yellow on the helmet is normal and only the blue is matte.
Kovacs' looks really tan. Like reaallly tan.
And, uh, well-endowed... maybe a bit too much detail for a mannequin?
From those pics, the maize pants kinda look bad with the jerseys. Should try some blue pants, imho.
If we're the home team, we should wear blue jerseys with maize numbers. Maize pants. And the most Iconic helmet in college sports.
If we're the road team, we should wear white jerseys, maize pants, and the most Iconic helmet in college sports.
Why is that so hard?
Oh, I agree, there's no reason to touch them other than using modern materials and such.
But if you're gonna screw with them, at least make them look semi nice. Maize pants with white jerseys with maize numbers, a strip of blue on the shoulders, and blue helments is just... imbalanced. Yes, it would look like Toledo or WVU, but aren't we already nearly there?
Blue pants would have made Michigan look like Toledo. How about white jerseys with blue numbers, outlined with maize. Blue block M's on the sleeves and white pants.
Go Michigan Mountaineers!
Surprisingly, me likey those helmets!
Nothing terrible in a vacuum, but nothing helps branding quite like constantly changing the way you look.
Love the helmet. Jersey looks okay. I'd rather have a Bennigan's or an Applebee's patch on the left shoulder though. Better prices on their menus.
Isn't Michigan the home team?
I kind of like the helmets; at least they didn't screw with the design. The jerseys, on the other hand...meh.
Fire David Brandon.
The most iconic look in all of sports has been changed for no reason other than to maximize profits.
(Serious question: Where do the Legends patches fit?)
oh man totally sikk you guyz
Change can be good. But please lord don't fuck with the helmets.
I actually like them. I think they look good. It's only for the bowl game. I'll be adding it to my growing alternate jersey collection.
It's only for the under the lights game. It's only for the MSU game. It's only for the Alabama game. It's only for the bowl game. Bullshit.
Like the "rematch" with Appy State. It's all about the publicity, right?
can't wait for the "rematch uniform" to be unveiled. WOW factor indeed!
also, two-tone helmets look like ass. Particularly Michigan's.
Then simply don't buy them. Complaining about them is doing nothing. They're obviously doing well in sales and the players like them enough for them to keep doing them.
Kids get excited about these things. I overheard a couple recruits at the Spring Game that Michigan's gloves they wore last year were "cold". I assume that's a good thing.
Dave Brandon thanks you for confirming his theories on marketing.
The one he borrowed from P.T. Barnum, yes?
Failure to see the irony of saying, in the same breath, "it's only for the bowl game," and "I'll add this to my ever-growing connection," is astonishing. The reason we have these jerseys is not because it matters what the players think about them, but because we have fans who are willing to piss hell of ducats up the wall on every gimmick Brandon throws at them and pretend that "it's only this once."
This is just hideous. The matte finish usually only looks good with black or gray helmets
is whether it is a block "M" logo on the shoulder or a jersey number... the logical rationale is a block "M"
We're wearing the road uniform? Damn.
Designated home team wearing white. Ala LSU.
So is there anything we won't do for money now Dave? Thanks for messing with the best uniforms in sports once again
At this point, I have less of a problem with the alternative uniforms (because I know they're coming) than I have with the fact that they're butt ugly. These just don't do it for me. To mess with the helmet...I don't know man. Is nothing holy?
I actually like the helmet. But the jersey is God-awful. Horrible. Why can't they just wear the regular jersey? People pay a sh-tload of money to travel to these bowl games. They want to see Michigan as Michigan, not as a side-show circus act. I'll never understand the need to create new designs, especially since every single one of them has been ugly thus far.
Honestly, I don't mind them messing with the white uniforms. The white uniforms have gone through many different forms throughout the years; there's not really a unified 'tradition' with the white unis. It's the home blues which have been unchanged for so long. Those are the ones that I have a problem with changing.
You make a good point. Better to mess with the white than the blue. That said, why can't the special designs be more special and less "special"? People on that stupid show Project Runway (my wife made me watch) could design something better than this piece of garbage. And how much did the AD pay to have these garbage jerseys made?
Helmets are awesome. Jerseys, however, meh. Blue numbers and I think they'd be alright.
Steve and Barry's sell those jerseys. For under 8.50 too
*Sold.... How did we ever let a place like that go out of business?
I believe Michigan took away their licensing. Too inexpensive for their taste. Yes, everything was made in Pakistan LOL.
I used to be an assistant manager at Steve and Barry's and the jerseys were $21.18 with tax. God I miss that place.
Absolute garbage. I hate Dave Brandon. I hate this jersey, I hate this helmet, I hate the numbers, I hate the logo, I hate the advertisement on the jersey.
Easy there, Herm. Michigan has been wearing bowl patches every year long before Dave Brandon. Whether it was the Capital One Bowl, Allstate Sugar Bowl etc.
For the 2003 Outback Bowl, the actual Outback logo was on the sleeves. Not a patch. It was part of the jerseys.
but stop beating around the bush and tell us how you really feel?
I love Dwight Shrute and I love Herm.
Brandon is also the one that is starting the slow transition back to actual traditional 'maize' and away from the highlighter yellow of the last decade. Suppose you hate that too? Brandon's idea after all.
Are you talking to us?
how you really feel Herm.
Would you hate the patch if it were for the rose bowl? Didn't think so
Of course not, the Rose Bowl stands for tradition, honor, and classic games from almost a century of continuous play. The "Outback" Bowl is a third-rate, made-up bowl to promote shoddy faux-Australian cuisine to middle-income Midwestern American families so that they can gorge themselves on a helping of meat, potatoes, and pure fat that could sustain a small African village for a week.
This is why Herm is such a necessary part of the MGoBlog community.
I think I'll message the Outback Bowl commissioner that's pulling in multiples of six figures to ask this question: "Why does the Outback Bowl exist?".
I understand such disdain reserved for the "Heart of Dallas Bowl" or the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl, but the Outback Bowl is generally a pretty good one matching quality opponents most years. If you're suggesting it shouldn't exist, then you're the only one that wants to go back to the 1971 and earlier system where only the Big Ten champion goes bowling.
WE are the reason the Outback Bowl exists. Our fandom, our money.
You are aware the Outback bowl is actually the Hall of Fame bowl, right?
The rest - meh. It isn't that I hate it, it just doesn't do a lot for me.
If I were Adidass, I would have left the text off and be confident people would recognize the logo. It is similar to having to use a /s tag - if you have to use it, you're probably doing something wrong.
Every day I am thankful for Herm. He makes me feel a lot younger.
Anyone who doesn't hate every bit of this can show themselves out.
I do not care even the slightest bit about UNIFORM CONTROVERSY. I know I'm not alone here. The boys are still playing football and they are still representing my school.
The "support the troops" argument. This has nothing to do with criticizing the players. It has everything to do criticizing the leadership.
(Commence: "but the kids love the crazy new stuff"-- STFU--Alabama and USC disagree.)
It's more the, "I don't give a shit and it isn't a big deal because it is cloth that is covering people" argument. Football will still be football.
"Football will still be football."
That would be nice. Unfortunately, it's becoming NASCAR with a side order of NBA fan experience!!!
Please excuse me. I'm going to go vomit.
I just don't get the design inspiration. Is it supposed to harken to something in Michigan's football tradition, or is it just a random look that somebody thought was cool and contemporary?
Also, I wonder what it would look like if the wings/stripes were also matte. At least they didn't suffer a glitter explosion like:
And I'm glad they're not anything like:
with "at least it's not this..., or this..." is every time a change is made you get closer to finally accepting a Michigan helmet with wings on one side and a wolverine busting out of block M on the other.
If they stuck with the brushed gold for 100% of the helmet then they would be pretty sweet. Alas, they have to showcase their made up Irish heritage.
Notre Dame = French
As in "Wow, those are effing ugly!"
I hate the fashion show that sports has become.
LOVE the helmets.
Jersey would be better with blue numbers, that's my main complaint
Adidas would fuck up a one car funeral.
Not a fan of those uniforms at all, but I've always despised our move from maize to electric yellow. I'm surprised more traditionalists don't complain about the very fundamental problem of Michigan no longer wearing its true colors anymore...new uniform design or not.
Looks cool to me. It's too bad that Brandon stomped puppies and put them through a blender, then made a polyester-blend fabric out of the blended puppies in order to make these uniforms. That evil bastard. Next thing you know he's going to outlaw football and outsource the team to China...
Still better than his first choice....
I am not amused... at what point do they get an effing clue. STOP MESSING WITH THE MOST ICONIC UNIFORMS IN FOOTBALL!!!!
Here is a video of Kovacs showing the Uni for the bowl.
Matte helmets are a cool concept. And at least they are doing the M on the sleeve, trending back toward these I hope:
Not for sure what to think of the jersey, yet. Do love the Helmet I've always wanted us to try the matte blue. Everyone just needs to embrace it, because it's going to happen
YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO LIKE ALTERNATE UNIFORMS ON MGOBLOG
NEG NEG NEG NEG NEG NEG NEG NEG
This picture > 1000 words.
Quote from Denard.
Case closed. He loves them. I'm sure most of the rest of the team does, too. End of story.
You actually think a team member would say they hated them if they did? Not gonna happen, let alone the leader of the team.
If the team loved black jerseys with red helmets, just for a change, would you be on board with it then?
But I like them. I actually think we have to change things up once in a while on special occasions. This is the type of thing that sells to recruits. Screw all the old codger traditionalists that are whining. They can stare and marvel at the traditional uni's the other 11 games a year.
I think we could get really crazy and do some optifade digital stuff with the helmets too.
So we're only doing alternate uniforms once a year?! That's awesome. Thanks for this welcome breaking news. I had no idea the Brandon was making a drastic departure from his traditional practice of using alternate uniformz at least 3 times a year.
In 2011 Michigan wore:
That's 6 jerseys in 13 games.
By my count, in Michigan's last 25 games they will have worn 8 different jerseys. Or a different one every THREE games. That's just stupid.
Awful, kill it all, darkness, sadness, pain, synergy...
I'll like these a lot more if we beat South Carolina in them.
And our loss to Bama is the leading reason why people dislike the Cowboys Classic jerseys (which I personally love). Hopefully we get good memories out of these ones.
I'd dispute that being the leading cause for hating them. Close second though.
It's the cost of progress in the modern college athletics era, gentlemen.
More UNIFORMZ! = more $$ and more $$ = more state-of-the-art facilities needed to compete with other programs
This argument makes me want to throw up - it's repeated ad nauseum and reflects a complete failure to engage in critical thought. It is a bullshit talking point that makes no sense, especially with regard to Michigan. We are the motherfucking Joneses in terms of facilities and every other damn structural advantage. We do not need more monetizing, future-creating dreck.
I absolutely love the matte helmet...wanted this for a long time...
I like the jersey too...
Long hair don't care!
I think the matte helmet looks fucking awesome. Can't wait till NYD!
Totally agree re: the helmets. I'm not a huge fan of the jersey, but those helmets look pretty cool to me.
So sick of this crap. I'm not an old dude, so it looks like I'm gonna have to be sick of this crap for a long time. Or at least until DB GETS THE HELL OFF MY LAWN.
I can hear it now.... watching the game with my 5 year old son.... "Where's Michigan, Dad?"
I could care less what jersey they wear as long as they win Michigan will look great in anything. It doesnt matter what you look like only the final score is important.
They would look much better with blue numbers.
I kinda like the helmets.
tired of watching the clown show that college football fashion has become.
You are Michigan fer'godsakes, quit trying to look like some school who thinks they're Michigan.
Maize numbers are a horrible idea. So is a blue yoke. So is any change whatsoever to the helmet. And I kinda liked the Bama unis.
Get off my lawn.
As a current student, I really like these! They look good, and the team is excited about playing in them. Hopefully our boys make some good memories wearing these jerseys!
How the fuck do you know the students like them? This sounds suspiciously like the post of an interm from the athletic department.
Quit using so many damn exclamation points, you sound like a damn sissy. I agree with the man above me, this post is obviously Dave Brandon's doing.
Unis are horrible.
Helmets actually look pretty sweet.
just puked. No im not hung over
I'm going to start with saying I feel like I have used up a huge chunk of my outrage, and I just can't afford to get all bent out of shape about the jersey thing anymore. I agree with the whole "This is Michigan" sentiment and all that, but I feel like I am trying to punch through a steel wall when I get all upset, so I guess I am going to try to critique these from an "oh, well" stand point.
The numbers are too big and gaudy. These would actually look pretty slick if the numbers were just a flat blue or maize that matched the shoulders and slightly smaller. Otherwise, I don't hate it. It's not as tacky as the Alabama maize shoulders. If they're going to do these, they could make them look sleeker and not so gaudy, but I guess that's the opposite of what they are trying to achieve.
Regarding the helmet, I actually think the flat looks pretty cool. I don't know if changing the paint/finish really constitutes messing with tradition, but that's debatable. My only concern is that it's a step toward doing something outrageous (i.e. ND or MSU) like some posters demonstrated above.
The difference between ND and MSU is that their recent tradition has been lacking. ND hasn't had the winning to prevent the takeover of bad uniforms. MSU has never had it. If we start losing consistently then I expect the uniforms to start going downhill. Our winning is preventing that from happening.
Uh.... 2008 through 2010.....
And.... our uniforms are on a rocket powered sled to hell going down hill.
Sparty... two straight 11 win seasons. Uniforms from the bottom of the hill.
ND..... to hell with ND.
We had three bad years.
Notre Dame has had a mediocre (bad) decade.
MSU had a few good years.
Why would God allow this to happen?
And he hates you.
It's not fair that everyone else should be punished for that!
These uniformz are all of us being punished for that.
And He hates you.
(Corrected for proper deity reference capitalization.)
Actually, there's no consensus on that; it's more a stylistic preference than anything else. I personally don't like it because it looks weird.
I'll stick with the lower case "h" for him.
At least until he stops watching people touch themselves.
If the helmets don't get all scratched up like cheap kids toys, ill be happy.
Branding. I can't stand the way our helmets look on national tv when the paint comes off.
SMH...I Give up. You win dave you win. But, I hatechu.
It's not about whether they look good or not. The question is: Do they look like Michigan Football?
The answer is no.
(BTW- I'm even willing to tolerate this once a year, but anything more is a clown show)
How far are we now from a black alternate?
Tune in to next year's Notre Dame night game. You'll love the WOW moment of a stadium-wide Black Out as the team runs out of the tunnel in our black jerseys and back and maize chrome-finished helmets.
helmets are cool, unis are ugh. does tradition count for anything anymore, or do we all now have to be like oregon?
Helmet I can live with. Jersey makes me want to rip my own eyes out.
I'll admit it: I really like the helmets.
The jerseys would make good kindling for the torches for the march to drive Brandon out of the ADs office though. We are getting dangerously close to Nike COMBATZ/Euro-soccer clown costumes
We have some of the best and most simple / understated uniforms in all of sports. Why can't we wear them?
Helmets not so bad, jerseys are bad but something I noticed before, and it may be something small, is the "Riddel" on the helmets in red. I know the front one usually has MICHIGAN but the back stays with the red "Riddel", can that be changed to blue? Is there something saying it can't be changed from red?
Sadly for the helmet, the Riddell logo is their corporate trademark and it is officially red, although one wonders if they would make an exception for teams now and again, as it does stand out for some reason with the matte look. That being said, the matte look for the helmets is actually pretty slick, in my opinion.
As for the jersey, as others have said, the blue numbers would improve this some, and seeing the back fo the jersey sells me on the notion that blue numbers would at least make this better but it wouldn't do enough to change my opinion that this is a jersey merely "because we can" from the department. Not a fan.
I know there was a discussion in another thread a couple days ago on brand equity, and how alternative uniforms, if overdone, can start harming this valuable resource. For a brand with the potential market of Michigan and the iconic block "M" that goes with it, perhaps very sadly, it takes a lot of alternive jerseys before visible harm is done to brand equity.
Is this why I keep getting all the "Bad Idea T-Shirts" ads when I come to mgoblog?
Is being open to the idea of alternate uniforms but hating ugly ones like this a possible position for me to take here? If so, sign me up for that one.
Shouldn't it be special "uniform"? It misses the point of having uniforms to change them multiple times in a year. Just pick a home and away and go with it, otherwise they're just outfits.
why we would wear these if we are the home team.
I really like the helmets, i would be curious to see what the hemets would look like with the maize as a matted finish also.
... baby. I could give a rat's ass about anything else.
I LOVE the helmets. I think the uniform is okay.
says Michigan is his top team because of their bowl uniforms. Will visit tomorrow
It's a cool, modern spin on the uni. We don't always have to look in the rear view mirror at the way things "used to be". It's the helmet that's iconic, not the jersey.
Players nowadays like the alternate looks. The game is about them, not us fans.
My scale of recent alternates (tolerable to unforgivably bad):
11 ND (UTL)
This one is close to tolerable because of the helmets, but just a little too uniformz for my taste due to the numbers.
At this point I'm just so tired of all this. I could maybe understand one alternate uni a year, but even that's still too much for me.
But what, we're up to like 6 or 7 different Jerseys in the last 2 years? That's bullshit.
I'm sick of the fact that if we schedule a big game (hello UTL2) there's like a 95% chance we're going to bust out something piss ugly for the game "For the WOW experience".
it's hideous. The maize numbers make it look like a cheap knockoff from Walmart. I'm really not opposed to alternate uniforms (UTL was pretty good) but they always looks so cheap and tacky. Nice job Dave Brandon.
B1G, Addidas, Riddell, Outback, M... They really are starting to look like NASCAR uni's
We get highlighter yellow from these clowns instead of maize, so we shouldn't be surprised they can't find their own asses in the dark with two hands and a flashlight.
Hell, why not some neon blinking lights embedded in the helmet? It's the holiday season after all.
Dear Dave Brandon,
Thanks for making my alma mater's football experience no different than that of every other team out there. Being able to cling to things like tradition and a uniform that has barely changed since the late 1930s were really starting to kill my buzz. Now if you could please eliminate the band in favor of the latest JOCK JAMZ CD, throw a furry mascot on the sidelines, and make sure our video boards and sidelines are graced with enough Domino's Pizza, PNC Bank, and General Motors ads to have me ordering their products in my sleep, you'll be able to convince the next generation of kids to be Michigan fans. They won't have to defeat all odds like the hundreds of thousands of other Michigan fans out there who had to suffer through all that tradition in order to sit through a football game. I can't wait until I walk through the gates of DOW Chemical Michigan Stadium to watch my beloved Bell Tire Michigan Wolverines play. I'll certainly say "wow" for you.
Thank you for not saying "no" to the hallucinigenic ravings of a 23-year-old Adidas designer from the Netherlands who has never watched a Michigan football game in his life. The next shiny athletics building and 17-year-old running back recruit are totally worth it.
This is Michigan (TM).*
*A wholly owned subsidiary of Anheuser-Busch InBev.
God Bless You young man and all your words!
You should actually email this to Brandon. Back in the early days of his tenure he would respond to most emails. Don't know if he still does. I couldn't find his email address in the campus directory,
We also have special GLI hockey jersey's
For the first ever the product on the ice performs as bad as it looks.
reward to the guys. Heck, let the seniors pick them or whatever.
Prefer the traditional look for regular season as a symbol of "Michigan has historically and will continually focus on winning with straightforward, no BS football.". That's the brand essence.
Wake me up when they try to mess with the home uniform again. Never really liked any of the away jerseys so might as well keep trying to find something that looks good.
When you start messing around with the uniform (which has traditionally been the primary brand represenatation), you take away from the most distintive recognition of your brand. Once that happens, the other elements become more apparent, making your brand less memorable.
A good analogy is the Coke bottle. They can put whatever they want on the bottle (and they have) as long as the shape of the bottle stays the same you know it is Coke.
So when you see this, you know it is Michigan and remember Michigan:
When you see the uni's above the individual parts become more recognizable because you have lost the primary base design. Thus you are more likely to focus on the following:
Adidas: 8 logos (1 jersey, 1 pants, 1 each wristband x 2, 1 each sock x 2, 1 each shoe x 2)
B1G: 1 logo (jersey)
Outback Bowl: 1 logo (jersey)
Riddell: 1 logo (helmet)
Michigan: 2 logos (1 block M on the pants, and the winged helmet)
The Michigan athletic dep'ts strategy sure doesn't follow most traditional or new brand philosophies.
It could be worse.
...and that is not a dare, Mr. Brandon.
The blue shoulders are OK, but the numbers look cheap. Maybe they'll be better on.
finds out the blue version is for UTL part 2
we wear something like this. Looks like East Keokuk State. Hind-end ugly.
They're not "special uniforms". You've tried this clown shit for every single meaningful game we've played in the past two years. Anybody who watches Michigan on national-stage games has seen FIVE different uniforms in the past two years. That's not special, that's a mother-effing sideshow. This makes no economic sense (nobody's running out to buy these pieces of horseshit), no branding sense, no traditional sense, and no fan-support sense. In short, you, Dave Brandon, are a moron. Please go back to selling pizzas and leave our freaking football tradition alone.
And by the way I hate your pizza too.
Love matte helmets. The jerseys look horrible.
I hope so hard that there's a front page poll asking readers what they think of these. These things are the. worst.
Good lord y'all always bitching about something. As long as the kids like em that's all that matters.
I like it. A much better attempt than the MSU jerseys. Still not as good as the Sugar Bowl jerseys.
I think this picture is appropriate for this thread
That uniform would look way cooler if it came with a cape. Too easy to grab during a game, though, I suppose.
No capes. /Edna
The matte helmet looks good. That's not the uniform I would expect from the "home" team, but hopefully it looks better on the players. And I guess this means no legends patches.
I have always been one to keep the helmets the same. However, this minor change I can live with. The jeseys are whatever. Adidas seems to come up with a new design that is equally boing and unoriginal every week. I feel like their design team is sitting somewhere in a east coast high school right now waiting to get out of class. I am not complaining; I just feel that they are not drastically different. If they wear them then ok. If they don't I am cool with that too. Just hope the home unis do no start changing. As long as the helmet design is the same I am cool with those as well. I like the matte look.
Is boing the new wack?
sorry for the double-barrel joke. blame mobile non-editability
Yes. It is horrible, this idea.
Looks like shit.
We also have new hockey jersey's for the GLI
These uniforms are terrible. It's a good thing Yost is dead.
Yes, good thing. Otherwise your MGoUsername would be really creepy
The yellow numbers will be tough to see on the television. It will look like a blob on everyones backs. It's got blue piping so there is a chance we will be able to see them but it won't be very clear.
Um....I actually like them. And I'm probably one of the oldest real people posting here (Herm doesnt count - he's simply another RDT incarnation).
So that makes three of us I guess who approve. Brandon, me and that dude in section 3 who wears whatever jersey we're featuring this year. Just us three.
The helmet, you won't even be able to tell from a distance. Anyways I think yet look cool
Literally no one else cares about this but Michigan fans. Also, when did everyone become such a pro at marketing? I feel like Dave Brandon says the word and everyone all of a sudden knows everything there is to know about marketing a program/brand.
Is this football or barbie time? Play and talk about the dang game.

You mean to tell me only Michigan fans care about Michigan jerseys!?!?!?!?
yeah, I'm old, so what? I still wear the Bo style navy Block M hat. Never tried another style. Hell, I probably have boxer shorts older than some of you. I hate uniformz, but my opinion is not what matters to the people making decisions.
Froma global perspective, I think its dangerous to do whatever you can in the sake of profits. Eventually you become dependent on those numbers, and if you can't reach them, then you might make other concessions to your ideals in order to maintain those profits. Eventually, you're a slave to the dollar and have lost a lot of what made you special to begin with.
May not happen for 100 years, but the slow erosion of certain values and traditions is a slippery slope we are now all trying to reclaim solid footing on. Short term gain, potential long term loss.
Now...GET OFF MY LAWN
And that statement is...WHO wants some free PIZZA-AAAAAAA?!
Seriously, these look like uniforms you'd shoot out of T-Shirt cannon at a San Jose SabreCats game.
Rolling out a few alternate uniforms a season like we're some flash-in-the-pan team begging for attention is bad enough. But what I hate most is the implied premise that this is a special game that deserves recognition.
Playing Ohio State is a special game. Playing in the Rose Bowl is a special game. Playing against a mediocre team in the fucking Outback Bowl is NOT a special game for Michigan. Why do we want to give the impression that playing in the Outback Bowl is such an honor that we design a special uniform for it, when our sights should be set so much higher?
I'm ok with it BECAUSE it isn't a huge game for us. The players get to have fun for a week in Florida, celebrate their season of hard work done in the classroom and on the field, and play an exhibition game, which at the end of the day doesn't mean much.
If it was the Rose Bowl or National Championship I'd want to remember Michigan wearing something more traditional. This isn't, so I'm cool with whatever, as long as the players enjoy it.
This is exactly what Dave Brandon wants, some fans to accept the new uniforms for "big" games and the rest to accept them for "not-important" games. Well guess what, Dave? We're not going to accept any of your goddamn XNFL jerseys. They generally look like they were designed by a fourteen year old girl with a box of mis-labeled crayons.
If anyone here is generally happy with the way college football has been moving in the past decade, I would really like to hear your reasons explaining why. While cheating may not be as prevalent as the 1980s, it is more necessary to winning. The bowls have grown more numerous and less significant. The BCS has proven to be a failed system which had promised to right the wrongs of years past... instead rarely a year has passed when significant wrongs were not egregiously distributed. The uniform fad is one which I pray will pass when clearer heads prevail or over-medicated fifteen year old Wal-Mart Wolverines who haven't learned how to use a belt yet stop buying jerseys.
The new conference system gave tradition and academics the seat in the back of the plane next to the bathroom, while giving profiteers the emergency row exit with the extra leg rooms and the television people now run the cockpit. Instead of the athletic directors saying "Take the wheel Jesus" they have turned in to "Take the wheel Big Ten Network". I pity those who are going to be subjected to the "new" college football.
So shove your faces full of 48 oz sodas, squeal when the rap music blares through the million dollar sound system, use cuss words against opposing teams, scream your loudest believing it will impact the game, pay more money for worse seats, show up later to the games in order to drink more, buy your $100 jerseys because you can think of nothing else to frivolously spend your money on, forget about the marching band, ask for the cheer leaders to wear less and dance more scandalously, proclaim the importance of the "student-athlete" while blatantly ignoring the realities of the current semi-professional system, and most importantly, remember to ask your goddamn cable provider to pick up the Big Ten Network because that is what college athletics and life is all about!
the best post ever. And to think that the newfangled "World Wide Web" made it possible!
you people suck
Awww so nice of you to say that, Prof X! You suck too!
Here, come give Peggy a hug.
Me thinks DB skiped class that day in Advertising 101 when they did a case study on new Coke. Sometimes you can mess with a good thing and totally screw it up. DB is on his way of doing just that. Send him back to the pizza shop. Now, get off my damn lawn.
Too Big To Fail, huh?
Dave Brandon comes from the world of public corporations, where the most important thing is showing profits in the next quarter. To the extent it cares about profits, Michigan should care about the next quarter, but also the next year, decade, and century. If fifty years from now nobody views our uniforms differently than they view Maryland's or Oklahoma State's, then we will have flushed a lot of long-term brand value down the drain.
Stupid uniform discussions are stupid. I like the traditional clean uniforms, and DO NOT WANT Nike Pro-combat uniforms. Having said that, if people want to waste their money on every iteration of uniform that comes out, well, that's their prerogative. I can't blame DB too much . . . suckers are born every minute.
One aesthetic comment: any uniform that is made to be put over pads (in terms of appearance, having a contrasting color or design on the pads, i.e., UTL, MSU bumblebee, Outback Bowl) looks particularly stupid when worn by John Q. Public without pads.
One practical comment: who cares about the uniform, as long as Michigan wins!!
Love the helmets. The blue is actually a lot darker than the original helmets and there is less Maize. However, the jerseys not so much especially the pants...
I love them - b/c they are on the white unis. Keep the blue home standard. However, we are the home team here, so why are we wearing white.
Dear Maryland, welcome to the Big10. Out of solidarity and as a welcoming gesture, we're trying to mimic your style. How'd we do?
More gimmick bullshit with the uniforms. I'm sure the players love them though so whatever.
its not that i don't like the design, i just don't believe that the purpose of the design is warranted.
The Romans got cute and began to nick thier gold coins first, then began using cheap metals to make them, and this led to thier downfall....
WTF Brandon stop tinkering with the uniforms... how is he getting away with this crap? The bumblebee jerseys were an embarassment, and now he is messin with the helmets.
God, I cannot stand all of these alternate uniforms.
so many patches and logos it's on the verge of looking like a nascar jacket.
As long as they never change the winged helmet, I can deal with these occasional uniform tweaks.
They changed the winged helmet.
I've changed my stance on the uniformz trend. I used to hate any changes, but now I'm at the point where I can live with a couple alternates given two conditions. 1) are the players excited about wearing them? and 2) is the team recognizable on tv?
I wasn't a fan of may of the alts so far, the UTL being the exception, but there was never any doubt watching the games who was playing. The brand remains strong. On top of this, Denard was quoted as being really excited about wearing these so I don't see any problems.
Add yellow trim to the shoulders and you might be on to something.
While overall I still hate these almost as much as I hate liver and onions, that does look better.
I'm with you. But I couldn't let DB and Adidas have all the fun.
Wow, much better.
I cry and run whenever I have to touch photoshop, so forgive the rookie question. Is there a way to quickly invert the maize and blue on the pants? I.E. Blue pants with maize "M" and Adidas logo?
I'm sure I'm insane, but I just think it'd look better against a white jersey with the blue shoulders.
My photoshop skills aren't very good either... just good enough to create these rough mock-ups.
Still, that's perfect for a mock up. Thank you for taking the time.
Call me crazy, but I think that looks better than what a team of Adidas and ADpt people were able to put together.
Now thats about 1000X better. The maize numbers just dont look right. I can say atleast they kept the wings gloss.
Much better indeed
Just awful. I almost don't even want to watch the game now.
LOL, is this sarcasm, or do you really decide which sporting events you watch based on the aesthetics of the uniforms?
Question: Do players love USC's uniforms, which have remained relatively the same for decades and have never once featured names on the backs?
Do players love Penn State's uniforms, which essentially haven't changed since the last ice age?
Do players love Alabama's uniforms, which have been relatively unchanged for decades?
Players like winning, and players value tradition if you sell them on tradition. We are moving more and more in the direction of selling them on merchandising and Oregonization. For me, the whole "players like it, so we must do it" argument doesn't hold water as long as teams that don't do this kind of thing still manage to win without it, and without their players having to get trotted out in press releases to say how much they love whatever they're going to be given to wear whether they say it or not.
I'll preface this by admitting I'm a "get off my lawn" type when it comes to jerseys. But I just don't comprehend why the away jersey has to keep getting so damn busy or gaudy. I hate piping and design like that, so maybe that's why I hate these so much. I'm not sure. But there's just way too much going on.
I also fear the helmet change is a prelude to the inevitable. Fuck.
I'm ambivalent on the aesthetics of the jerseys. But in reality what I think means absolutely nothing - it's the players that wear (and approve) the jerseys. I've never played a down of Michigan football. I have no right to say whether or not I think what they wear is pretty.
I diagree wholeheartedly with you on this one, my friend. You have EVERY right to say what you think about Michigan's uniforms. You are a Michigan fan. Michigan football, and every other Michigan athletic program, owes its existence to its fans.
Furthermore, I doubt very much the players were consulted about whether or not the jerseys would be used. DB thinks fans will vote with their money by purchasing these jerseys. And he's probably right.
Or are those lacrosse uniforms?
...look like shit.
Love love love the helmets, I've always been a fan of matte and I think these are really well done. Will make the wings pop even more since they're still gloss.
The jerseys on the other hand, meh.
White pants would look a lot better. If you are going to change the uni's at least make them look good!
I think it is funny that valid comments are being negged for the sole reason of liking the uniforms. Talk about groupthink.
Yellow numbers look so disjointed from everything else.
Love the matte textured helmets.
I'm with you there. A new look I could get behind.
I thought we were the home team this year? Guess I was wrong. My kids will take two.
these uniforms suck.
Stupid, stupid, stupid. Bowl games and night games and neutral games bring out a new stupid ass uniform every...single...time. How many more times do I have to say if its not broken, don't fix it? I want a time machine so I can go back to years where college football wasn't a fashion show with special themed uniforms.
I don't care if I sound like a cranky old man. We have the best uniforms in college football. Use them. Leave the ugly factor to Oregon.
If football isnt a fassion show, then why do you care about the fassion aspect so much.
Pointing out logic fails is clearly trolling.
I remember the good old days when old people couldnt use the internet.
and when I say hate, I mean HATE this
Im embarrased to frequent this blog after reading the absurd reaction from both the for and against crowds.
Why? Why the hell? Why the f---? Why do they hate the regular uniforms so damn much? What, are we trying to make maryland feel welcome???
Recruiting tool, recruits love the alternate uniforms. I think much of the general fan base does too, the more casual (non MGoBlog) types anyways. I think overall the athletic department does a nice job of maintaining tradition but not letting us fall behind other schools in terms of what's now. Alternate unis are definitely now
Can we please have Nike back???
Just stopping by to register my discontent. That's all. Rabble rabble and whatnot.
It is a sad state of affairs when channels like E news talk about football because of Tim Tebow, and MGoBlog has a discussion thread in which people are discussing whether our FB jerseys would look better with blue or yellow pants and whether matte clashes with ordinary finish.
Don't yellow, maize, gold, white numbers on a light jersey. Never have, probably never will. Besides that meh.
The Alabama game jerseys and these both look like shit. The numbers and the shoulders look awful.
Maybe the players like it? Maybe they are just taking what little mods to uniforms they can get? God at least make them look good. The UTL ones were fantastic and the Sugar bowl ones were pretty damn nice. Stripes = Classic. Solids = Vomit.
The players liking these uniforms, like every other uniform we've had the last couple years, is just playerspeak. They're not going to tell the media they don't like the uniforms, they've been told what to say by Michigan's pr people.
I think these unis are pretty sweet and the helmets are on point!
...where I've seen that design before; the (now defunct) Pensacola Ice Pilots of the ECHL.
EDIT: Gah, I apologize for the ginourmous size of that pic...if anyone with mad editing skillz can fix that for the benefit of the community, you have my blessing to do so.
I love them. Time to change, as the game around you changes.
Love love love love love the helmets
But that flat color on the helmet is sick!!
I'm 50-50 on the jerseys though. The blue shoulders remind me of Michigan hockey jerseys from the 80's I think.
I'm not usually a get off my lawn guy, but GET THE FUCK OFF MY LAWN BEFORE I GET MY PUMP ACTION 12 GAUGE.
Rabble rabble. Angry angry. Hate hate hate.
Fire Dave Brandon. This shit is ridiculous. We're not Oregon, we're Michigan fergodsakes!
At least oregons look cool...
Let's fire Dave Brandon because he's bad at uniform choices, but great at making money. I say keep Brandon for life. Super smart dude.
One might argue Michigan is the 2nd most profitable brand in spite of David Brandon, and not because of. Certainly there was a lot to work with there before he showed up. One might also argue some things are worth more than money. That a program could reach a point at which incremental profits don't mean a whole lot. Lastly, one might argue that plans for improvements to the facilities predate David Brandon.
My god can they knock this shit off already??????
if Adidas could come up with an alternate uniform that wasn't the ugliest uniform they've ever made
Michigan basketball leveraged maize jersey numerals. Looked remarkably good back then IMO.
+2 for a picture of Gerard Rudy.
The helmets are tight. The jerseys not so much.
Why does he have to fuck with our winged helmets? Isn't anything sacred?
Our uniforms look like shit again. Way to go DB.
