once Gruden takes the Tennessee job?
this may be of some local interest
once Gruden takes the Tennessee job?
University of Dayton Alum.
and usually has some good insight. Would not have minded Mr Griese though.
everybody and everything - there won't be any hating vibe that's for sure. Plus every Michigan player will be described in a "Fred Jackson" style........love it - plus I will be hungover so sound will probably be turned down a touch.
"See [veteran NFL player] here? I like this guy. I call him the workhorse. You know why I call him that [rookie NFL player's nickname]? 'Cause he's a workhorse."
Love listening to Gruden. He's this generation's John Madden and I have no problem with that!
Scouting his new Badgers team.
I hear the skiing in Colorado is nice this time of year. Perhaps he will pass by Boulder to investigate the infrastructure the football program has been building.
Not as nice as the beaches in south Florida though, Gruden's kicking the tires at FIU right now
I couldn't diagree more. I love Gruden. The guy knows football, particularly offense, and is as enthusiastic as they come. The only downside to this may be that he probably isn't able to watch as much college football as other announcers, but to be honest that probably means he'll have a fresher perspective and rely more on the film he'll watch on both teams.
But enthusiasm doesn't necessarily lead to good things. McGary is enthusiastic about playing basketball, but that high energy can lead to good things (like 5-5 FG's) and also mistakes (like 4 turnovers). I think he sometimes doesn't know how to stop talking and just let the game stand for itself, a lot of what he says doesn't add a ton of value for me.
Also, I just don't like the sound of his voice. Just a preference thing.
Gruden's gushing can be a bit much, but he really is a quality announcer, especially given the other options. I don't know how many times I've heard him say something like "I wouldn't be surprised to see X happen right now" and it inevitably does. And his X is usually pretty specific.
I like Tirico a lot, and Gruden doesn't bother me much. I'm just thankful it's not BTN. Or Pam Ward.
Surprised it isn't Herbstreit and Spielman with Casey Anthony as the sideline reporter.
I hear Urban Meyer is free this bowl season, I enjoyed his commentary last year.
Tirico lives in A2. Good choices.
I don't love Gruden, but that's a lot better than the vast majority of shitty announcers that I hate, so I'll take it. I'm pretty relieved, actually. He'll say lots of nice things about our players, and as an actual coach I respect his opinion. He does lay it on a little thick, but he doesn't just talk out of his ass to fill the entire broadcast like some announcers do.
I would pick them over any team other than Buck/Aikman. Sure, I like Herbstreit's commentary, but he's so often paired with Musburger who makes me nauseous.
Tirico is pleasant and critical enough; Gruden is very good at picking apart a play and explaining the keys to it.
Turico is a Michigan guy, and Gruden is the man. I guarantee you Gruden will watch 20+ hours of film on both South Carolina and Michigan and be fully prepared to break down the game as he sees it. He's a coach at heart and it will be great to hear his insight on our team.
I wonder how many times Gruden will slip up and say he's a "National Football League player"
I love the Gruden/ Tirico combination. Now if we can only get our Offense on track. Thats right Al Borges!!! IM TALKING TO YOU!!!!!!!!
That's one of the better teams out there. A lot better than the pair doing the Ohio game, couldn't switch over to Brandstatter quick enough.
"That Devin Gardner is a gunslinger, like Josey Wales!"
I don't have much of an opinion on Gruden, but Tirico sucks as a play-by-play guy. He doesn't have the voice for it. He is a studio host who ended up with a play-by-play job merely by default because he worked for ESPN. Much like Steve Levy. Disney no longer tries to get great play-by-play guys like they used to. If they have an opening, they just pluck somebody from the sidelines or the studio, regardless of whether they have the voice or the elocution for it. That's how Pam Ward, Dave Ryan, and Mark Jones got their jobs. Just about every play-by-play guy on ESPN who is really good has been doing the job for over 20 years.
that way when John Saunders calls games, but I like Tirico. I think he is an underrated play by play guy.
I don't remember John Saunders calling any games.
Chris Fowler is another guy who is fantastic as a booth host but really bad as a play-by-play guy, and who only does play-by-play because he was a pre-established ESPN personality.
Tirico's excited calls are particularly high pitched and annoying.
I'm shuddering at the thought of Rothstein in the booth for Michigan games.
TomVH calling a game might be interesting, though.
Gruden is one of the few announcers who doesn't completely dumb down his commentary. Probably the only one who ever provides anything new for an educated football fan.
I think Gruden is pretty good at the Xs and Os.
Right. Gruden is one of the very few who really gets into the X's and O's. Chris Collinsworth does too, but it seems to me not as much as he used to. The best at this is Mike Mayock of the NFL Network Thursday night games. He also does Notre Dame for NBC. Brian mentioned in the UFR on how excellent he was during this year's Michigan-Notre Dame game.
Tirico rarely does Michigan games, despite living in Ann Arbor.
The last two I remember him doing was Braylonfest in 04 and Iowa in 05, both of them overtime wins.
But he did the Alamo Bowl we were in most recently. Actually met him and Herbstreit at the bar before the game.
I stand corrected. But we won't go into that game.
The announcer were in a bar before the game?
But yeah, the night before Angelique and Wojo met up with Tirico and Herby at a packed bar.
I don't recall any Alamo Bowl game with UM in it.
Was really looking forward to Pam Ward.
Dear lord I hope that is 100% sarcasm
How could it not be sarcasm?
I'm happy with this selection. Gruden at least provides actual X's and O's insight. Tirico's great. Of course, if Michigan is losing I find EVERY announcer to be annoying, no matter who they are. Lol
Does that say more about the state of sideline reporting, or me?
I was just about to mention that we are leaving out the fact that we get Shannon Spake for this game, too. Yes, please.
It could be worse!
love them together on monday night football
Thus Spake Shannonthustra
I personally like Gruden. He's enthusiastic, he's positive, and I think he makes interesting comments and insights. And, even when he says something negative about a guy he seems to do so in a productive/encouraging way. He never seems to bash anyone. So, either way he will have some good things to say about Michigan I think.
If you were wondering...WHO?
It's because she does NASCAR.
I was hoping for Brad Nessler. On such a busy day, however, we could have done a lot worse. I agree Tirico doesn't have the voice for it. Gruden is annoying, but sometimes his over the top analysis is hilarious. This game is basically going to be a Gruden droolfest about Lewan, Clowney & Denard.
Yes, I love Gruden and Tirico. The best crew.
I love Jon Gruden.
My favorite all time play by play crew (at least on national TV, locally I'm a homer--no one touches Mario/Rod and Mickey/Ken) was Gary Thorne and Bill Clement.
As long as its not Spielman or Matt Millen, I am good...
YES. I love Gruden. I can't wait to hear his analysis mixed with nonsensical [unconfirmed] nicknames.
"Denard Robinson is a foot-ball player. They call this guy 'The Razor', because he's always talkin' about animals!"
Gruden is good friends with Coach Spurrier, and has visited our practices several times in the past. He also has a home in the Tampa area. I know that doesn't really matter much, but I'm sure he's happy to be able drive to the ballpark and sleep in his own bed.
Love Gruden's passion and Tirico's sensibility.
Tirico and Gruden - just fine by me.
I grew pretty fond of the Dave Pasch/Brian Griese team this year. I hope that continues.
No complaints this way.
I hope Gruden isn't too harsh on any of the players. I hear he's not much of a cheerleader in the booth.
On TV, Gruden is not funny and adds little insight into the game. I don't need nor care what a color guy's opinion on anything is (including gun control). I'd like you to explain why something worked or didn't work and suggest things I should look out for. He is relatively poor at that within a group of people who are very disappointing.
I'd dump this group for another random pull from the bag of announcing teams.
Love the selection. I like Tirico PBP and I love me some Gruden (I guess I get why some don't neccesarily enjoy the man doing games, but I always enjoy broadcasts with him).
we won't have a "Buckeye Homer" like Spielman announcing. Now if they can get rid of Robert Smith out of the studio, I might be able to watch the ESPN without wanting to throw something at the TV!
Exactly what I was going to post. Can't stand either of them.
I swear I remember seeing Smith on tv when he quit football saying he was going to med school.
A great team of announcers that don't dumb it down and call it like it is. Tirico may make a Zingerman's reference but that doesn't make him a bad guy. Can't wait to see if Borges learned anything and becomes more "creative".
Are some people seriously complaining that we got the Monday Night Football crew? I think it will be interesting to see how they cover the Lewan Clowney matchup; I mean its a matchup that they might cover someday on Monday Night
How much do scalpers sell tix to a game like this for on gameday?
As long as its not speilman of millen.

Good commentary. Anything is better than the Big Ten Network commentary if you ask me... l wanted to hammer tacks into my ears.
I'll be waiting for Gruden to say something like, "I LOVE this guy, Denard Robinson. He's as fast as car. I call this guy Speed Racer because he's always mach 5."
I was hoping for Beth Mowens and Matt Millen with that guy Todd something or other who pissed Coach Carr off on the sidelines.
- Jon Gruden, reacting to RGIII taking a drink of water on the sideline
Your hyperbole is not refreshing...John Gruden is the master Color Analyst!
but michigan offered 4 star RB Joe Mixon today.
