Out of town Michigan viewing--A Lesson

Pay attention to your Mgoblog out of town Michigan viewing thread. This last weekend I found myself having a beautiful time in NYC. After walking around the Central Park area with my wife, we decided we wanted to watch the second half of the Michigan game, but alas, without a computer and access to Mgoblog, we did not know where to go. We even happened upon a group of 20-something guys walking around all in Michigan gear and carrying a football. "Hey," I said, "Where are you guys watching the game?" Turns out it was halftime but they were watching at their apartment, out taking a walk. We ended up at Mickey Mantles on Central Park and of the 25 TVs one game had Michigan-Purdue so we were able to watch the end.

Interestingly, there were college football fans from all over the country and we ended up talking college football for a few hours. We even spent an hour talking football with a couple who are Buckeye fans, and I must report they were very nice, intelligent, and supportive of Michigan's return to prominence for the sake of The Greatest Rivalry in Sports. I shook the guy's hand, wished him luck, and said, "Be careful what you wish for!"

Caveat being they were from Pittsburgh, although the dude played for Tressel at Youngstown State. His take on Pryor was interesting: Tressel promised him he would make him an NFL pocket QB and most OSU fans are pissed because they think Pryor could be Cam Newton if they let him.

The next two weekends I'll be in Georgia, probably going to the  Georgia Tech games... :( 

Luckily I found out that the Ga Tech/Georgia game in athens is an evening game...so I won't miss THE GAME!

To be fair most college football fans in the city are fans of the game and respect is shown. For those of you that visit on a game day, do yourself a favor and head to Brother Jimmy's in Union Square. They cater to Michigan solely during gametime.

I don't know that I've met any OSU fans that I'd call "reasonable," but I will say that once I left Ann Arbor and landed in Boston, I have a real affinity for most fellow Big Ten fans, almost regardless of which school they support, since I think we share a similar experience, that people from a lot of other schools can't or don't understand.

That said, MSU and OSU fans are stupid, etc. etc.

I moved from Ann Arbor to TN. I almost never liked any Ohioans before, but now 2 of my favorite neighbors are from Columbus!

I couldn't believe it, either.

However, I do pretty much avoid them during November.

As a Wolverine in exile (California, to be exact), I've generally found our Buckeye in exile counterparts living away from the Midwest to be friendly and polite people, their passionate support for an abhorrent program led by none other than Satan himself notwithstanding.

Buckeyes in Ohio, on the other hand... Not so much.

...because they moved away due to the fact that they're gainfully employed.  I know a number of OSU grads with whom I can have a conversation.

For all the talk of "Walmart Wolverines" Columbus is made up of a ton of people with nothing better to do than be obnoxious OSU fans.  A high percentage of them never attended.  It is either that or the Blue Jackets...

I live in TN and the thing I hate is vols fans bringing up the bowl game that they smashed us in. Everyone down here gives me a hard time because they think the sec is way better than the big ten.

My mind was blown right here.  Nowadays everyone I know seems to carry some kind of smartphone; comes in extremely handy for this kind of thing.   Honestly on those rare occasions when I realize I forgot my iPhone at home or if the battery dies, I experience a brief moment of panic as the reality sets in.**   

If you're just against the idea of a smartphone or don't feel entering a lengthy, coin extracting service contract, you should at least check out the list of M-friendly bars before heading out of town.

** admittedly this is probably not a good sign

Atleast all you guys get someone to have 'reasonable' college football discussion with. I live in England have no one to talk college football with. I actually play American football here but everyone thinks NFL is the dogs nuts and no one cares about college. I'm usually stuck watching Michigan games, drinking by myself at 5 pm. At work I deal with a guy who works in the States and is unfortunately MSU fan and am stuck talking to him about any college football. He didn't go to state so he has a good education and is a pretty nice guy. Huge shock, I know!

  1. Go to a sports bar, preferrably one with a lot of TV's. 
  2. Politely ask a bartender or waitress if he/she could turn on the Michigan game.

If the answer is no, return to step 1.  Otherwise, order a drink and enjoy.
