Our secondary, poised for a large turnaround next season?

Submitted by FL_Steve on

Per ESPN, "Michigan State's secondary had a big-play problem in 2009. The Spartans gave up too many and made too few of their own."

"Consequently, Michigan State ranked last in the Big Ten in pass defense (267.6 ypg), pass touchdowns allowed (32) and fewest takeaways (14). The Spartans ranked second to last in the league in interceptions with just six."

Always nice to see Sparty falling short to us in some way, especially when its our biggest Preakness.

GO BLUE!

Dear MGoBlog community, My deepest apologies, my eyes worked faster than my mind on this one. However, in an attempt to rectify this imprudent oversight, I am editing the title, and will follow that up with the rationality, sparty has seen a fast improvemnt in their secondary, and we all know anything they can do, we can do better!

This has got to be one of the levels of football hell.  When you can't talk about win and loss so you end up with stuff like "Haha you have a big play problem."  Someone go find a Domer and figure out how far down the rabbit hole we can slide.

Also 2009....?

While the OP missed the whole point.  You need to look at the positive.  Everyone assumes we are doomed to an endless loop of bad defenses.  MSU was last in the league last year returned most of their starters and made major improvement.  We are actually doing them 1 better by returning everyone and swapping Woolfolk for Rogers.   Improvement is certain and dramatic improvement is possible.

Our 97 D was just about the greatest ever.  Why doesn't anybody talk about that now?  I mean, if we could have paired that squad with Denard and crew this year, our margins of victory would be sick.  How come nobody is talking about that?  I'm looking at you Rosenberg!

Sparty is better than Michigan at something else? Great, can't wait to hear more crap from my Sparty coworkers.

/s, I don't have Sparty coworkers.

Edit: OP is 2009 link. So instead...

Pointing out how theres other teams (like MSU or non-BCS teams) with a worse defense than us is like when Americans say at least our education system is better than that of Ethiopia. Our defense is a disgrace and theres no sense in saying at least its better than [insert never going to be a National Title contender team here].

Even tho i root for all Big Ten teams in bowl season....it'll be nice to see Sparty get lit up like a x-mass tree in the bowl game!! GO BLUE

Good Lord. This is very Michigan State of you. Please don't brag about anything until UofM is beating MSU again. Even if you didn't source the wrong year, which you did, I would take no joy in it.

To address the tiny bit of substance in the OP: Michigan State was bad against the pass last year but at least they were very good at stopping the run finishing 24th.  Expecting a wholesale turnaround from a defense that's bad at everything is extremely optimistic.

i don't see why this was stupid. i've consistently heard that RR is awful bc of the defense. yet Saint Dantonio presided over a defense that was worse and no heads were called for. whatever.
