It was a good quip by Harbaugh. Funny. These are all Biblical names. Really, these names are all in the Bible "Top 10 Male Name" list. However . . . Harbaugh is incorrect in this case.

  • Gospels are Matthew, Mark, Luke, John. So we're at 25% of the Gospels.
  • Apostles/12 Disciples are Peter, James (the elder), James (the lesser, or younger,) John, Andrew, Bartholomew, Judas, Jude (Thaddeus?) Matthew (Levi,) Peter (or Simon Peter,) Phillip, Simon (the Zealot,) and Thomas. Paul has a claim to have seen Jesus, and thus the claim to be an apostle. However, this was after the fact, and Paul wasn't one of the 12 disciples. Paul says, "Last of all he appeared to me, as one abnormally born." So he hits 25% of the Apostles' names, if you remove Judas and add Paul as a replacement.
  • David is the perfect name. It is in the Torah, so it is a good Jewish name. It is in the Bible, so it is a good Christian name. He was a king who killed thousands, had a ton of wives and concubines, was very wealthy, so he is very popular as a name. However, David has nothing to do with either the Apostles or the Gospels.

This is probably way, way, way more info than anyone cares to know. But hey, that's ok. I did find it interesting that our new kicker didn't have "Joseph" (Mary's husband) or "Peter" (the head apostle, known as the first Pope) in the list, two very popular names for many Catholic parents. Not being Catholic, I might be clueless about why that is.

EDIT:  Should have read the whole thread before replying to the above poster. Just saw that my point is made below.

Whoa there... David has ALOT to do with the gospels.  He's mentioned multiple times as an important link from the Old Testament to the NT gospel stories and share many similarities with Jesus of whom the gospels testify.

David was a shepherd boy in Bethlehem, where Jesus was also born.

Jesus was a descendent of David.

David Prophecied about Jesus in Psalm 22.

And, seemingly paradoxically, Jesus is the "root and offspring of David" (Rev 22:17), meaning he created David and yet was born through him.

There are more.

So Harbaugh is sort of right. David is a nice gospel name in the metanarrative sense.   I'm sure that's what he was thinking.

I liked how Harbaugh said something like "that's almost all the gospels"... All of his names are Biblical, but only one (John) is a gospel (or even a book of the Bible).

Very cool to me that he Harbaugh can talk about his players and give those facts... Even after only knowing them a short time.

Has to go a long way with his players that he takes such a big interest. I can't wait to see what happens with a full year of recruiting.

Andrew was also a disciple (along with John and, of the late "still-born" variety, Paul). In addition, the Gospel of Luke was accepted into the Canon in large part because of Luke's connection with Paul. It's considered a "Paulinist" gospel, as I recall. David is obviously a Jewish name from the Hebrew bible, but the others are all connected in various ways to the Gospels.

Wow.  Newsworthy.

Besides, OP misused the "all your X are belong to us."  IIRC, the "X" is supposed to be in the singular -- "All your linebacker are belong to us."  That makes it even more grammatically unsound and hence, uh, more funnierish.

Also also, one of those names was a confirmation name, sorta a Catholic thing (being a Catholic myself, I think I can say that without being accused of namecalling).  I wouldn't count is as one of his actual names.

In his Hello post, user @MassillonBlue said:

"David is a better athlete than your average kicker. He is in a battle for the starting QB job this year with a senior and uber '17 recruit Danny Clark.

He's been Massillon's starting SS and hit in the top third of the order since day 1 as a freshman. One of the top '15 baseball players in OH. He is definitely a D1 baseball player. Hopefully he can play both at Michigan."

In this video, he says he will also play baseball at Michigan. Pretty neat.

If the Prince Of Wales can be Charles Phillip Arthur George then I would imagine this definitely happens on occasion. We probably have some MGoBloggers who could claim a similar sounding combination. Actually, in my fifth grade class (I think hearing David's name rekindled this memory, oddly enough), there was some kid who was only in school about half a year named Thomas John Thomas, so apparently sometimes it gets taken a step further and the name becomes reflexive.

John is NOT a given name as it was a name he chose when undergoing preparation for the sacrament of Confirmation. His given name is Andrew Paul David.

Sincerely,

If there are three things people around here get worked up about: 1) bad or uninformative thread titles, 2) threads with no real information, research or thought behind them, and 3) improper meme usage. So, before too many IBDs get thrown out there, here are some suggestions. 1) Change your thread title to: name analysis of new kicker. 2) Do an analysis of kickers who have two middle names, as well as kickers who have four first names. What is their average star rating? How many have gone on to have successful college/NFL careers, etc. 3) edit your meme to the properly improper syntax: All of your name are belong to us. 4) Profit.
