Our Comprehensive List Of Head Coaching Candidates

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

A few notes:

  • This is an MGoList - that's why it's "our" list; it's meant to be inclusive rather than exclusive. This isn't an official or unofficial list from somewhere else.
  • Coaches will be added or removed if the mention/nomination gets enough support.
  • This is really just a resource that I plan to keep up with throughout the year; so that when the time does come...we have a starting point of candidates and comments on many of them.

Schiano should definitely be on the list. For those who think he's an asshole and don't want an asshole coach, I remind you that Bo was an asshole. There's a reason he's known for the phrase those who stay will be champions, he was a tough coach. I don't want a nice guy coach. I want someone who wins.

One of my SEC buddies mentioned that we should go for Petrino. I thought it was an intriguing option that I hadn't considered. I dont think he has any real loyalty to Louisville. There's no question the guy can coach, especially if we are looking to improve offensively. He did amazing things at Arkansas. Not a perfect choice by any means... especially from a PR standpoint. But if people are clamoring for a crazy person like Les Miles, I don't see why you wouldn't consider him as well.

The one that sticks out the most to me is Gary Peterson..has shown consistency with TCU and for many years now...dont forget some of these coaches are who they are due to the players they get..question is can they mold a 2* into a great player

That was the excitement around him..."OH MAN! He took 3* players and turned them into BCS killers! Wait til he gets the 4* and 5* guys at Michigan!"

Problem is, he's so system specific that he didn't have a shot at many of the 4* and 5* guys that Michigan traditionally has a shot at. And the 4* and 5* guys that fit his system all go to the SEC or schools with lower academic standards.

Think about the vast majority of our highly rated recruits before Rich Rod, they all fit the same mold for the most part. NFL prototype (white) QB, slashing/power back, tall rangy WR, TEs (which Rich Rod didn't even use), huge mauling OL, huge mauling DL, slow physical LBs (which killed us in the spread era)...

None of those fit the Rich Rod system.

Patterson's system is a lot closer to "prototypical Michigan" which will help, but we can't make the same mistake twice. Because we're not getting the 5* speed guys to come play at Michigan, they're going to LSU and TAMU.

It seemed to me that Rich Rod's recruiting problems were mostly on the defensive side of the ball.  Yeah, I know he didn't bring in enough OL, but when he left we had Lewan, Schofield, Molk, Omameh, and Barnum--which was an awesome line in his offense.  It's impossible to know what kinds of OL classes he might have brought in for 2010 and 2011 if he hadn't been in danger of being fired the whole time.

I think RR's problems recruiting defenive talent had more to do with his defenses being laughably awful than system issues.  If he'd have hired a good DC and put respectable defenses on the field and won more games, the recruits would have come.

I spoke with a good friend who works in the front offices of the 49ers yesterday.

His take is that The purported "rift" between Harbaugh and players/executives is completely overblown. Everyone that claims otherwise "is full of shit".

I think we can put that notion to rest. Jim ain't coming home - p.s. It's 72 and sunny in San Francisco today, and will plan to be for the next two months.

I don't get why Miles gets so much love around here when you can basically have a younger, hungrier, less batty version of him in Gundy.  I don't buy that he wants to remain at OK St. for life just because he's an alum.  As long as Stoops is at OU, he will always be second fiddle in the state.  He has a solid record of winning outside of Miles' shadow, consistently produces great offenses, and most importantly, he's an asshole.  We need an asshole.  He's also A MAN.  HE'S FORTY (something)!!!

I also remember when Patterson down at TCU was the next big thing.  Now he's just quietly successful at a small fish in a big pond.  He's still worth a look even though he's not the "it girl" he once was.
