Our Comprehensive List Of Head Coaching Candidates

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

A few notes:

  • This is an MGoList - that's why it's "our" list; it's meant to be inclusive rather than exclusive. This isn't an official or unofficial list from somewhere else.
  • Coaches will be added or removed if the mention/nomination gets enough support.
  • This is really just a resource that I plan to keep up with throughout the year; so that when the time does come...we have a starting point of candidates and comments on many of them.

I think the best course of action is to fire hoke now and name nussmeier IC.  I truly believe he is being handcuffed by hoke, look at his sample size everywhere else he has coached, much larger and much more successful than the 5 games hes coched here.  That would give us an opportunity to evaluate him and potentially have a young coach with what looks to be be a great offensive mind, but who can probably put a great defense on the field also.

Yeah, i think hoke is telling nuss what his offensive philosophy should be and what types of plays they should run, regardless of nuss' comfort level running those plays.  I'm not sying hoke is calling the plays on the sideline, but he is probably dictating things like tempo, personnel, and the play calling in practice.  seriously, look at nuss' success at his other stops and then look at the way hoke does thing, you really think hoke wouldnt do somethnig like this?

I don't think it's necessary to speculate about whether Hoke is "handcuffing" Nussmeier in order to suggest Nussmeier as a plausible candidate.  Nussmeier was very close to being offered the Washington job, and will undoubtedly be a head coach somewhere soon regardless.

I realize that Nussmeier is currently in charge of UM's terrible offense, so the reaction is sort of like, "well if he can't do a good job with the offense as OC, then why would be put him in charge of the whole team?"  But he's been a good OC other places; his offensive coaching skills really do not concern me.

What does concern me is, this Michigan team is playing way beaneath its talent level.  There is quite obviously something amiss with the mental state/chemistrry/intagibles.  I don't know what it is.  But one possible explanation could be all the dynamics with Borges being fired and Nussmeier--who everybody had to see as probably being more qualified for Hoke's job than Hoke himself--being brought in, possibly at the behest of our egomaniacal Athletic Dictator.  If that is indeed the problem, we may just need to totally clean house.

It wouldn't be as bad as RR. There's too much actual talent on depth to be that bad, Morris has enough wheels to make it viable, and besides, not all spreads require a running QB. Think Clemson with Boyd; he could run, but he was mainly a passer. Plus Norfleet would be a great addition to such an offense.

Pinkel old news?  He went 12-2 and won the Cotton Bowl last year.  His record at Mizzou is 106-64, at Toledo 73-37-3.  He just beat South Carolina on the road (but yes I know they lost to Indiana the week before - Indiana can jump up for one game and bite lots of teams).

We don't need a 20-year guy.  We desperately need a proven winner with a track record, someone who can develop players and out-scheme his opponent.  6-8 years is fine, certainly enough to put the Hoke/RR years in the rearview.  A careful succession plan is all that's needed.

Despite what doomgloomers say, Michigan is a very attractive job.  Hoke just proved you can recruit with any team in the country, you have amazing facilities/fans/alumni, US$ currency, and a roster that's ready to win now.  If you want to get in the Final Four, there's no where easier to do that than in the B1G: win two tough games a year (Ohio State and whoever is taking the MSU/Iowa/Wisconsin role that year) and take care of what would mid-to-lower level SEC equivalent teams (PSU, Nebraska, other) and you're there.  Pinkel has a much better shot to do that at Michigan than Mizzou.

I thought about Todd Graham, but after last night, maybe not.  One other possibility and I hate to type this name:  Randy Edsall. He turned UConn into a legit team (except when Denard shredded them) and Maryland is a field goal away from being undefeated and in the Top 25.

My dream is Jim Harbaugh, John Harbaugh and Les Miles.

If not, here is my list (not in any order, except Bob Stoops).

1. Bob Stoops - Probably not happening. Don't know the pros and cons, but we can ask him if we can match his salary to Saban.

2. Art Briles - He has done well the last few years, but I don't know if it is the conference.

3. Bobby Petrino

4. David Cutcliffe - This could be interesting, but it will be a chance we are taking.

5. Mike Gundy

Agreed. One can dream. Right? Also, we need to show we are a top 5 powerhouse and pay someone high salary like Alabama. I wouldn't do that to anybody except to Bob Stoops or Harbaugh brothers or Miles.

There is my dream. Long shot, sure. But, sometimes money can speak volume.

-- Jim Harbaugh

-- John Harbaugh

-- Greg Schiano

-- Lovie Smith

-- Adam Gase

-- Dan Quinn

-- Craig Bohl

-- Dan Mullen

I suppose my preference would be a rising NFL assistant; I thought Bill O'Brien was the best coach in the B1G when he was at Penn State.

I don't know if Nussmeier is a viable candidate or not.  He would have been a year ago, but now I don't know what the dynamics of a Nussmeier promotion might do.

No to Schiano.  Gase is intersting.

Chris Peterson would be an interesting idea.  Everyone thought he was tied to Boise St but that wasn't the case.

Does Kevin Wilson get a look?  He's made Indiana somewhat decent and pulled off the Missouri upset.

I don't see Petersen leaving UW after just one year. Plus, leaving Boise for Seattle is one thing; leaving the Pacific Northwest for SE Michigan is quite another. I realize Schiano failed in the pros, but so have several other good college coaches: Saban, Carroll (pre-USC), Spurrier. I don't know much about Schiano--just that he turned Rutgers into a good team, then went to the League and sucked. But if that's the only knock on him, I don't know why he isn't a good candidate.

Why no Craig Bohl? 3 national titles at NDSU in Division IA? Worked out for OSU I'd say.

I wouldn't mind Teryl Austin or Narduzzi either. I don't care if he's from MSU. I want to win.

You should add where the candidate is currently coaching to your list.  As we start to think outside the box a little more, it won't always be obvious.

I started this in the middle of the night when I couldn't sleep and it was just college coaches, and for me, those are pretty obvious (except Stanford's OC).

Then I went to NFL and I don't follow NFL as much, but I started to get sleepy so I just went to wikipedia typed NFL coaches and there was one page with every team and it's coaching staff. So I used that to help make the list.
