OT:What Is Your Age Limit For Wearing Replica Jerseys

Submitted by twohooks on

While I was enjoying Verlander's gem at Comerica last night my wife commented that there is no age limit for Jersey's these days. Back in my day (old timey voice) replica's were worn by children although they were tougher to find. The opines also seem to fall harder on men than women maybe it's a transition to your girlfriend wearing your lettermen jacket in high school, who knows. But the question needs to be asked, how old is too old to wear a Replica Jersey? Is it more acceptable/main stream now?

EDIT: Authentic or Replica's apply, anything that reflects what is on the field.

I'm not sure of all the rules, but I think these three can safely be appiled: a) anytime or place with a #1 (which will always be A.C. to me) or # 2 UM jersey, b) at a game, or c) at a skank pick-up bar Downriver.

does the jersey belong to a player older or younger than you? Older ok, younger no.

Regardless, jerseys to me are fine. I have a Michigan Brady, Pats Brady, Yzerman White and Tractor Traylor authentic jersey from way back - I wear them from time to time and don't think twice. I have a Dutch national soccer jersey without a name/number I wear at times too.

Like many of you, I really hate when guys put their own last name on a jersey. Living in L.A., tons of Raider fans do this. But I hate jerseys with no name (that should have a name) even more. Mix in the fact that you're not allowed to put a college players name on a college jersey + turnover every few years, I've been seriously thinking about ordering an authentic jersey from MDen with my name on a #2 jersey (fave #). Too douchy? If they sold the new Adidas climawhatever jersey I think I'd pull the trigger.

I'm old as dirt and while I would feel a little odd wearing some younger player's jersey, I have no problem wearing my Hank Aaron vintage Milwaukee Braves #44 jersey.

Couple questions for the no-jerseys-after-college crowd:

- What is acceptable to wear? (Because if the answer is "t-shirt with a player's name/number on the back", man, I don't get you.)

- Do you plan on, at any point in the game, rooting your team on with something more enthusiastic than regular applause? If so, what is the point of being dignified about jerseys?

I have my good ole standby white U of M football #1 jersey, and as of last year a blue #16. For every other team I cheer for, I keep to t-shirts. Personally, I think jerseys for football, baseball and soccer (if that "sport" is floats your boat) is fine for all. All other jerseys are questionable past a certain age.

Jerseys should be worn by kids under age 10 or cute college age females at games/tailgating. All the threads complaining about the Adidas and "Under the Lights" gear skates right over the fact that nearly everyone looks stupid in jerseys or college logo apparel.

P.S. Yes, I'm that guy next to you at Crisler or the Big House wearing a sweater or button down. And I'm not even old.

a Hasek jersey that I wear at Wings games, a Cabrera jersey I wear to Tigers games, and a 16 Michigan jersey that I will debut at the Big House this fall. I almost only wear jerseys when I go to games. I'm 24

Im 28. I only have a Tigers jersey and Barry Sanders "authentic" Lions Thanksgiving jersey. Ive been meaning to get a UM jersey for the longest for football games but usually go with a maize UM tee.

Also for sporting events I dont think theres really an age limit. I dont give anyone a funny look at CoPa for wearing a Tigers jersey. Sometimes I'll see a Cobb or Kaline jersey and think its pretty cool. Although its possible it might not have been a throwback when they bought it.

I think it's fine if you're at the game or watching on TV with a group, or even if you're playing a pickup game. For everyday wear it's a bit odd.

I have given this much thought:

First, as to the risk of wearing bad jerseys, please see http://straightcashhomey.net/

Second, what about Ebbets Field's jerseys, the cool authentic minor league flannels? See http://www.ebbets.com/. I feel like those are wearable for most ages given their throwbackness. Then again, I own enough to qualify for a volume discount. Solid Mitchel and Ness baseball jerseys also get a pass in my book, as do iconic retired NFL players like Payton and Sanders or a solid Yzerman jersey.

Third, at the game is always cool, unless you qualify for a straightcashhomey shot.

Fourth: Basketball jerseys are for workouts, pick-up games, mowing the lawn or framing for your office. Not cool to wear otherwise without an undershirt, and even then I would limit that to wearing to the actual game. I have pasty white skin and backhair...no one wants to see that.

Fifth and last: Your own name on the back? And you're over 13? Oy...

Ah, the dreaded "I root for both teams" jersey. Unless you are the mother of players on both teams, it's definitely to be avoided.

And these guys? Where to begin...

Is that a "Big Country" jersey? Funny.

Deadspin had a found photo series a while ago dedicated to hipsters wearing obscure NBA jerseys, called, I believe, "Look at this fucking hoopster."

I think replica jerseys should be made in the size of the player whose name is on the back. There is nothing uglier than someone who weighs 350 pounds wearing a jersey from a WR. Similarly, a lot of plus-300 pounders in the Tampa Bay area still like to wear their Carl Crawford jerseys. Ugh.

Really, though, I would never wear a jersey with someone else's name on it. I don't even wear designer clothes with the designer's name. It might be ego, pride, or a personal quirk. Whatever it is, I dont think I would have wanted a jersey with a name on it since I was about 14. I would have loved an Al Kaline jersey when I was about 8 or 9, though.

Put me in for 12 if we're voting.

I only wear jerseys if I go to a game, or at home in my living room (adds to the excitement since the wife is an MSU fan).

In public, aside from games, I haven't worn a jersey since high school.

I don't know what is "acceptable" anymore, I just find most of the tshirts boring, plain, or dumb. The jersey is timeless.

I wear my #2 and #16 home jersey's at times other than football games. I'm 22. Not so much for a night out but if I'm just running errands or shit and there's nothing else clean, I'll just throw on of them one.

At the peak of homophobdon. I was sporting my Billy Sims jersey and my friend commented, "I didn't know you were Billy Sims' girlfriend." Like many of you, the ritual at high school was that you gave your girlfriends your jersey to wear on the night of the game. I did not like getting called Billy Sims' girlfriend at that age, and I promptly hung it in my closet.

The funny thing, 20 something years later, whenever I see a person wearing a jersey, that "girlfriend" comment pops into my head ...

I need a ruling on the propriety of rocking a Curtis Granderson Tigers jersey. I'm still in mourning that he got traded, and I feel like he's an honorary Tiger until he kills us in a playoff game or such. Any thoughts?

Of course, that Dontrelle Willis jersey in the back of my closet is like a bad 1999 dot com stock. Pets.com anyone?

I am in the same boat. Curtis remains in my top 3 favorite major league players, and I own a home jersey of his. He was universally loved in the D, plays hard, and he's a good role model. I say it is fair game UNTIL he kills the Tigs. then, might have to see the firepit.

Personally I've always been vehemently of the opinion that just because a player is gone, whether that be to retirement or playing for another team, that's not sufficient reason to put that jersey in the back of the closet and forget about it. It's all about the circumstances and what you're comfortable with, but the player being no longer on the team isn't reason enough.

Think of a spectrum with Uwe Krupp and Juan Gonzalez on one end and Gordie Howe and Barry Sanders on the other. You would never stop wearing the latter two. I wouldn't be caught dead in the former two. Granderson? Beloved former Tiger, terrific citizen, left against his will - I'd wear that one, yes, even to a game against the Yankees with him in the lineup. Maybe especially. I say wear the Curtis Granderson with pride. Dontrelle Willis? Tough call. I could see being OK with that and I could see not.

I have (and wear) a ton of jerseys. Most, however, do not have a name on the back. I learned my lesson after being burned in succession by Charlie Batch, and then Kevin Jones. Now, a player needs to be a "legend" in order for me to purchase his jersey. An authentic Billy Sims is the latest (and greatest) addition to my collection.

Im pretty sure the state of ohio quit wearing Lebron James jerseys a little while back. They even torched them like people in Iran burn the U.S. flag. I guess they hate the guy?

I have four Michigan jerseys and I never wear them because I am 46.

I agree on the name on the back thing. If it's your name and your kid is not playing in the game your either watching or attending, then you're a tool.

If my son grows up and plays football in college, I will wear his jersey with the name on the back proudly. Other than that, uh, no.

Sigh...I kind of feel sorry for you. I am sure that you are a very proper man, who is always thoughtful, always says the right thing at the right time, projects a professional image, will have a beer at a bbq, but never two. There are pleanty of douchy guys who wear slick suits and swindle old ladies out of their retirement money, but that does not seem to reflect badly on the suit and tie. Douchiness is not confined to drunk dickwads in jerseys. The world is filled with too many stuffed shirts as it is. You can be both respectful and mature and a times wear a jersey. The biggest thing is to be yourself, be comfortable with you who you are. My thought is that if you are keeping four jerseys in your closet that you do not wear, that there is a part of you that would really like to, but you are afraid of what people think of you. If you are never going to wear them again, get rid of them. I have never understood someone who would keep a jersey in their closet, say they would never wear that because they are too old, but not throw them out. To me it says you are too insecure to wear them, because you are worried what people think of you...its sad really.

Well stated, sir. Too many U-M fans are worried about what other people think about them, which, IMO, is part of the reason why Michigan Stadium is not the great home-field advantage that it could be. People need to loosen up a little and stop taking themselves so seriously.

Soccer Jerseys without a name on the back are questionable because no one knows what the hell you 've got on. I was wearing my Heerenveen jersey and my buddy had his FC Utrecht jersey on down in Florida a few years back and some tourists from the Netherlands struck up a conversation with us. (I thought that was a cool story, brah.)

My daughter and I wear our UM jerseys on game day only - we own home and away - without names on the back.

I would argue the obscurity factor makes European soccer jerseys that much more acceptable. My kids and I are avid followers, and they are big time soccer jersey collectors. I started to notice the jerseys are really comfortable for lounging or as workout gear. The team branded adidas clima cool shorts are also great for playing basketball or running. I'm not above wearing an Argentina, Holland, Chelsea or Barca shirt out and around. The white collared jersey England wore in the 2010 World Cup is actually a pretty nice shirt and I love my long sleeved red version as well. This spread to Rugby and I wear my All Blacks jersey with jeans all the time.

i would not feel right about wearing the jersey of a domestic team, though a Red Wings jersey is tempting. That most people don't know anything about the European soccer shirt I'm wearing somehow makes it more palatable for me. Having said that, I don't judge. It's just my personal taste and I can't logically justify it.

Soccer jerseys are more like regular shirts, so it's not quite as big a departure from the regular wardrobe. And not having names on the back increasingly seems like a good thing to me, given how so many pro athletes' careers flame out quickly after they achieve souvenir-jersey status.

Having said that, I'm seeing a growing number of Barcelona/Man U jerseys and they're starting to lose the anonymity factor. It's like those are the "gateway teams" for Americans.

Rugby jerseys are generally pretty classy. I see them as a cut above the normal sports jersey in style.

I rock my 77 jersey a few times a year. Last season I was 29, now I am a little older. :( I live in upstate NY so I wear it: to Bills Games, Michigan Games, to the grocery store on saturday mornings to buy 30 packs on ND day, MSU day and tOSU day. I get into a lot of great conversations on saturday mornings. I do not really wear it anywhere else.

I am 43, a professional, and while I would not wear a jersey to work, I throw it on for game days, for those days when I am "ultra casual comfortable" mode, such as back yard BBQ or at the beach. One thing I like about the high end stiched jerseys, the $175+ kind is that they are damb comfortable. I am fairly comfortable with myself, am the boss, and my clients don't hire me because I wear a suit and tie. I wear jeans and a tech-polo most days to the office, don't like to futz with my hair so I throw on a Michigan ball cap (sometimes I will wear a University of Wester Ontario cap becasue my son attends Western). The cap is always my "dress cap" as I call it. That is the brand spanking new fitted cap, usually the "sideline" edition of which I buy one or two new a year so they stay pristine. The blue in the Michigan caps fades very fast. I have always found that it is good to not get too serious about one's self, and not take oneself so seriously that you can't be seen outside with a jersey on after a certain age. I wear my cap backwards at times too, just because.

I agree that they shouldn't be in the regular rotation after age 18, but my exceptions are

1. If you are attending the game

2. If your watching the game at a sports bar (non sports bars, like a hotel lobby bars are not acceptable)

3. At home for whatever reason.

I would so rock a jersey anytime anywhere...I just don't have any. Haven't purchased one since maybe 8th grade. My thoughts are if you want to wear it then do it. If not don't judge somebody else because they have the confidence to wear it. And if a good looking girl is wearing one you better believe I'm going to strike up a conversation. I am 24.
