OT:Weekly Gambling Thread

Submitted by WichitanWolverine on

Haven't seen one of these in awhile. Who do you guys like? Per ESPN I see the following lines:

-Baylor -20.5 vs Texas

-Houston -5.5 vs Temple

-Bama -18.0 vs Florida

-Stanford -4.5 vs USC

-MSU -3.5 vs Iowa

-Clemson -4.5 vs UNC

I'm surprised at how small the last 3 lines are. I'm up a very small amount on the season so to hedge myself I'm throwing it on MSU moneyline (-170). I plan to keep doing that until someone knocks them out.

What action are you guys taking?

They already beat SC by 10 in LA. It was early in the year, but I think Stanford has improved more over the course of the season than SC has (Stanford doesn't lose to NW if they played today.) The game is in Santa Clara. That's a virtual home game for Stanford. SC was playing for Helton's job against UCLA. They won and he got hired. There's likely going to be a letdown after that.

Full disclosure.  I was on BGSU when the line was -10.  It's up to -12.5 now.  The 2.5 points don't affect my thinking at all.

Bowling Green plays football so that we all may win money.

Iowa has a 3 point win against Pittsburgh, 4 points against Wisconsin, 9 vs Illinois, 8 against Indiana, 5 against Minnesota, and 8 against Nebraska. Their one impressive win was by 30 against Northwestern.

I suppose I could do the same thing for MSU, but in their last 5 games they've blown out Indiana, Maryland and Penn State, beat OSU on the road, and only lost to Nebraska by giving up two late scores, one of which was dubious, at least according to my spartan friends.

I'm staying away, possibly for the rest of the season.  I'm up a pretty decent amount on the season, and I'm pretty much ready to just cash it in.  That said, if I were betting, I'd go with MSU, and likely with Stanford as well.  Bama line is just too big for me to bet on (though I could definitely see it, I just struggle to take that big of a line in a championship game).

those 4 wins include a 3 point win at Colorado, 6 point win at Cal, and an 8 point win at home against Arizona. The UCLA game was close until late and Oregon beat SC by 20.

Stanford had Oregon beat until a late turnover and only lost by 2. They beat Cal by 13, Colorado by 32 and Arizona by 38.

I agree you can't do the transitive property thing, or look at individual games, but in 4 games against common opponents, Stanford has done much better than SC, and Stanford beat SC by 10 at SC, and this game is at Santa Clara. Anything can happen, but if I was a betting man, I'd give the points.

I like Iowa moneyline, Florida against the spread, Houston to cover.  Baylor I'm not touching (I don't like when spreads get that high generally), and I don't have a good feel for either the ACC or Pac 12 game.

I just spent the money i've won on MSU recently on an arcade cabinet though, so I should probably quit while I'm ahead.

i'm wrong but something seems funny about the Clemson UNC game. I hope Clemson wins to keep osu out but I don't trust Clemson.

Maybe they are just talking UNC to make people tune in.

I think Iowa may stand up to msu, perfect playing conditions, keep that D off balance and they just may throw the ball down the field more than twice.

I don't like any action on these lines. I had some pretty big success (relative terms, I only bet in $10 increments just as hobby) this season almost strictly playing the over/unders. The Big12 has been my friend since 2008 in that regard. Without doing the research yet for this week and not even knowing the numbers, I'm guessing I will probably like the over in Stan/USC and the under in MSU/Iowa and Bama/Fla.

The Baylor line scares me a bit - I think they could conceivably cover that, but generally I won't take lines that big, especially late in the season and during conference championship week when all the unexpected things seem to happen in games that prevent teams from covering.

I'd probably take Stanford, MSU and Clemson though.

somehow, if you're emotional-hedging on msu's ML based on nothing but...emotions (I guess?), I find it hard to believe you're up "a very small amount on the season".

I'm a skeptic by nature though.

I don't gamble, but I like Florida vs. the spread, Iowa to win, and USC with the points.

The Baylor-Texas game I wouldn't touch.  You just don't know what you're going to get from Texas.
