OT(ish) - Trevor Pryce

Does anyone know why Trevor Pryce transferred to Clemson from Michigan years ago?  I seem to remember thinking he was going to be a stud at Michigan He lived in my dorm sophomore year (1994-95) and the next thing I hear he is playing for Clemson.  Anyone know if there is an interesting story behind that?

(I ask because I just saw him on ESPN as an analysis and wondered what could have been . . .)

IIRC it had something to do with "team rules."  Sorry -- that's probably not much help, but I don't think it was a wholly pleasant situation.

In the '90s at one point, I honestly believed that becoming an effective pass rusher at Michigan (something which wasn't seen too often in the '80s and early '90s around here) pretty much guaranteed that something bad would happen.  David Bowens (who left under a dark cloud) is the other name that comes to mind.

This board can be tough sometimes....wow.  The guy puts OT on the post and there's almost nothing out there to talk about today (especially with Brian on temporary hiatus for the day) but we still need to grill this guy for posting something about a former Michigan player?  Okay...

I was in school at the same time as well and I don't think the real answer ever came out.  I think this fell under one of Carr's "violation of team rules" and he just transferred.  With the media and technology today we'd know more about it, but in those days they kept Fort Schembechler locked up pretty tight.

I too found Pryce's departure frustrating since we lacked any sort of killer pass rush DE for years.  Both Pryce and David Bowens had promising careers at Michigan ended due to transfer for off-field situations.  It wasn't until Woodley and Graham arrived that we finally had a true pass rusher again.

He was an effing beast for Clemson that year. Those were the Tommy West years and he was one of the few bright spots on the team.

Saw him come around the blindside and hit an NC State QB so hard that the ball and the guy's mouthpiece ended up about 10 yards away.

Guys leaving the team during the final Moeller were rather common.  I don't recall the specifics of Pryce leaving, other than that he would occasionally work out in the IM Building weight room.

Any thoughts that I had of being "strong" died the day I saw him show up and do standing barbell shoulder presses.  He was at the squat rack at the far end of the gym and he put 225 on.  I assumed he was going to warm up for squats.  No, he was warming up for shoulder press.

David Bowens left due to academics.  He later tried to re-enter M, but was not successful.  Bowens was one of the few highlights of the dismal 1995 loss at Spartan Stadium, as I recall.  The other highlight being getting a pair of 50 yard line, row 20 seats for $50.  Best seats I've ever had for a game.

about Trevor Pryce.  One of the recruiting gurus said in reference to his evidently NFL-ready physique, "he's an everybody-off-the-bus kind of guy."

I remember that with such clarity because I've never heard that expression before or since.  And in all these years, I don't know what that means.  What's an "everybody-off-the-bus kind of guy"?  My only guess is that it's someone who is so physically awe-inspiring to look at, that a passing bus would stop and disembark all passengers to gawk and take pictures.

Other than that, I've got nothing.

The comment is used a little weird but I think it's supposed to mean this...he's the kind of guy you send 1st off the bus.  Not sure how common it is/was but when I played our coaches would send the biggest kids off the bus 1st to try and intimidate the other team.  I think that's what they meant by the comment.   It's kind of silly, but it is part of football lore.

the rumor going around with Trevor Pryce had something to do with "finding" someone else's cell phone (back when they were expensive to use) and racking up quite a bill on it, or perhaps a credit card which was used to pay for a bunch of calls.  Something to that effect.  Violation of team rules, quasi illegal kind of thing.  That was the RUMOR.  I never personally confirmed it.

That, coupled with the fact that he was an arrogant SOB made him less than a favorite on the team.  He was one of a number of physical specimens at Outside Linebacker we lost during the '93-'95 time frame (Coached by Bobby Morrison): Kerwin Waldroup, Shawn Collins, Rasheed Simmons, Mike Elston, David Bowens... all had great potential but either got injured or transferred for various reasons.

...I can puncho yo buns...
