OTish: Our Mascot In Action

Submitted by CRex on
Wolverines: Nothing but muscle, sharp ends and anger management issues. I managed to stumble across two decent You-Tube videos of our mascot in action. In the first one I've opted to name the wolves Brutus and Sparty. You're welcome to suggest other names. Wolverine vs Bear: Some more Wolf on Wolverine Action (watch the wolf run for his life): Finally (there are more on this guy's YouTube Channel), but a clear victory for the wolverine:

I have always loved the mascot, it is pretty unique among the schools. Too many Bulldogs and others that are more generic. The animal is one mean critter.

I watched a informational show on researchers trying to capture one before. Problem was, they would run up to 80 miles per day and destroy any cage they were trapped in. Finally, some trapper guy was hired and built a trap out of log cabin 2-3ft diameter hardwood logs (it looked like Paul Bunyan's bunker) and they got there in time before the Wolverine could chew out.

about a month ago, i contacted a scientist who does work with wolverines and trying to reintroduce them into various parts of the country where their populations have been drastically reduced. unfortunately, there is no study in the state of michigan, mostly canada and alaska, but michigan in the future. i was going to post a diary about helping them out financially, but all these earthquakes and helping out TomVH stuff keeps coming up. it would be great to harness the power of MGoBlog for something like this.

I'd be onboard. I always thought it was lame that Michigan was engaged in all these conservative projects, yet we never seems big on wolverine protection / reintroduction. We should be the leading school in the country on that IMHO.

I though it would be cool to have a wolverine reserve somewhere in the state. The problem I came up with is that wolverines need too much space. They're generally solitary animals that have huge home territories and frankly with Michigan being surrounded by water i don't know that they would have enough room to spread out the way they like. You wouldn't be able to contain them either. If they wanted to go through the fence surrounding some type of nature reserve, they'd find a way through it. Then of course they'd start rampaging through small rural towns or killing campers, and the killings would be blamed on the chupacabra or something and then all hell would break loose. So yeah. I'm all for it.

I feel like our mascot is more apt than ever. The team is now a little smaller, a little leaner, and twice as likely to just suddenly rear up and maul you for 7 points before you know what happened.

It must have been interesting to see them at the Detroit Zoo when it had 10 (!) of them at a time. Now they have like 3-4 (two of them being kits).

Yeah, I kinda had this fantasy of running into a wolverine in the wild, saying "Hey, go blue!," and getting a head nod from it. Actually, I've read that they would be likely to vanish in no time if you came across one, so long as you don't get in the way of their food or young. I've also read that there has never been a documented human fatality due to a wolverine.

"The University of Michigan Athletic Department reports that Biff and Bennie “grew larger and more ferocious,” leading Yost to conclude, "It was obvious that the Michigan mascots had designs on the Michigan men toting them, and those designs were by no means friendly."" Awesome.
