OTish: I want my NFL team to draft ___

Submitted by JeepinBen on

With the combine in full effect, a disappointing BBall loss in the rearview mirror and hockey off for a while, I thought this might be an interesting topic. Who is your NFL team and who do you want them to draft? Who do you think they will draft? OT-ish because most of us might want Michigan people on our draft lists.

I'm a Bears fan and I REALLY want them to draft Molk in the 2nd round. We need OL help like crazy and I think he's the best center in the draft. There's been talk of the Bears looking at Konz, but I think the 4" height difference is nothing compared to 41 vs. 18 reps on the bench. I mean, Hemingway benched more than Konz did. Sure the bench isn't that applicable to playing football, but still. you know what you're going to be tested on, you prep for the test.

There's also talk of the Bears taking Floyd in the 1st round. I feel "meh" about this. I'd rather have the Bears get a free agent proven wide out (Vincent Jackson?) than draft one, but I don't know who else works for the Bears at 19. I guess they could do both. We also need Safety help, but I'm not sure there is a good safety pick at 19.

Who is your team? Who do you want them to draft?

and would love to see him get drafted in the second round -- I think he's earned it.

However, I wouldn't want my team to take him the second round, because I think he'll be available still in round 4.  Trade down or pick up another player.

We'd all love to see him picked in the second round- but not a chance of that- too many center's ahead of him on the board accroding to all the experts.

Hard to figure out exactly why since he as a beast in college and had a good combine- but the BFL talent evaluators aren't nearly high enough on him to imagine him going in round 2.

I think everyone here at MGOBLOG seems him becoming a decent player- so let's just root for him to find himself on a team where he can be utilized an dprove he deserved to be picked higher!

Kiper has him the #2 C behind Konz and in front of Brewster: (from 2/22)

http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/draft2012/story/_/id/7598875/top-5-prospects-position

CENTERS

RANK
NAME
SCHOOL
HT
WT
Peter Konz * 6-5 313
David Molk 6-2 288
Mike Brewster 6-5 305
William Vlachos 6-1 294
Philip Blake 6-3 320

Analysis: Rivals top the list. Konz is a great one, a smart player who can make all the calls at the line. Brewster is really experienced and perhaps could have tested the draft waters last year. He's another center who could be starting as a rookie. Molk came on in 2011 and has given himself a chance to go in the early middle rounds.

Yeah Kiper has him high- as I remember most others were lower- more in the 4-7 range of centers.

Perhaps I am mistaken though- haven't looked again at the rankings of late.

Thanks for proving me wrong- hope he does go as high as Kiper thinks!

The Ravens need a center because they are not going to keep Matt Birk around.  Ozzie Newsome doesn't seem to like drafting Big Ten players but I hope they go after Molk and solidify the center of that offensive line, which was patchwork at best this year.

As much as I would love to have Mike Martin or RVB the Ravens don't really need them unless they wanted to put them at end opposite Suggs and even that's not a priority.  Same issue with Koger, since they already have two solid TEs.  While they want to get another receiver I think they are looking for more prototypical deep threat so I doubt they will fully appreciate Hemingway.

I am going through the Michigan players here, I am leaving it to Ozzie to find talent in the rest of the country.

I hope the Ravens finish 3-13 for all of eternity. Go Browns!

As a Browns fan, I just hope whatever they do works. Two years in 13 with a record above .500 is just no fun at all, as I'm sure many Lions fans will attest. Right now, if Pat Shurmur were to able to emulate the career of Wayne Fontes, I'd probably take it.

I think they should and will take Claiborne first. You can always find a decent RB in the later rounds. Claiborne is a true shutdown corner which are hard to come by. In my perfect world they would take

Round 1. Claiborne - they need DB help

Round 2. Kendall Wright - They need a deep threat

Round 3. Best available RB

Round 4. Molk - They might cut Jeff Faine to save 5.7 million and he's missed games the last three years.

Round1: duh

Round 2: I would love it if a stud gaurd or WR was still around.... Kendell Wright, Alshon Jeffery, Cordy Glenn... any of these sounds great.

Round 3: I don't know if they will be there, but Martin or Molk would be fantastic here.

I'd be amazed if the Colts picked RGIII. I think RGIII is more of a project to start with, whereas with Luck, he's everything you want in an NFL QB right away. Both are pretty comparable in stats, but what I think will separate them is that Luck has been running a pro-style offense at Stanford, so it will be nothing new to him in the NFL. Griffin's coming out of the spread, and while that won't necessarily hinder him (see: Cam Newton), I think Luck has the short-term edge.

Also, Luck is slightly taller and weighs a tad more. In today's NFL, that means a lot (unless you're Drew Brees)

February 27th, 2012 at 10:52 AM ^

I don't know if RGIII is that much of a project.  A handful of games into the season he had more touchdown passes than incompletions.  He can make all the passes and is extremely athletic to boot.  The skills are all there.

I do think Luck is better, and will be more successful right away.  Mostly for what you said, he played in a true pro-style system with a bunch of wide receivers that didn't excell at creating space.  He'll be more comfortable hitting the NFL windows than RGIII will be.  Think of Matt Ryan, that guy had nobody to throw to at BC which made him far more comfortable stepping into the NFL as a rookie.  There's a reason why Luck has been called the best QB prospect since at least Manning and maybe since Elway, he's as much of a sure thing as it gets.  He'll rightfully go #1.  But that doesn't mean RGIII won't also be a stud, even possibly as a rookie.

ScruffyTheJanitor

February 27th, 2012 at 10:31 AM ^

However, Luck IMO performed better with worse weapons and in a pro-style offense while being more durable and nearly as athletic. While the pro-style thing will probably come to mean less (and already has), and the fact that I think RGIII would have been the #1 pick every year since Matt Ryan, I think that Luck is still just a bit ahead. One might be a 97 and the other a 96-- both close, both excellent, but one is better. Luck just wows me.

But for some strange reason I feel like the release of Anthony Adams has us leaning towards an interior D-Linemen. It wouldn't be the first time we neglected the offense, hopefully our new GM can keep us from going back to our old ways. It's not a super deep class at WR so I would say pick someone in the mid rounds this year like Cunningham, McNutt or McKnight. Just due to sucess rates I never like taking WRs in the first round.

JeepinBen

February 27th, 2012 at 9:45 AM ^

But I think that it'll be lower in the draft. AA played the fewest snaps of anyone in the rotation last year, between injuries etc. and we just drafted Paea in the 2nd round. I wouldn't be suprised if they drafted an interior DL 5-7.

NorthSideBlueFan

February 27th, 2012 at 9:34 AM ^

and I have to say for your Bears, Cutler needs a true big play receiver and with Floyd being a ND guy that seems like a natural match.

For the Lions, either the best player available or some back end help. If Janoris Jenkins has proven he can keep his nose clean that might be a nice pickup for the low 20's.

JeepinBen

February 27th, 2012 at 9:49 AM ^

and if he's there I bet that's what the Bears do. I'd just rather get a proven wide out than assume that Floyd can be a true #1 (which the bears haven't had since at least 1998). I guess you could do both, which I wouldn't be upset about. The bears have a ton of 2012 cap space, hopefully they use it. My real ideals on all offseason moves:

Pay Forte. Elite free agent WR. Elite/Very Good free agent interior lineman (a guard from the saints?). Draft a safety or 2, at least 1 in the first 2-3 rounds. Draft an ILB for depth/to eventually replace Urlacher. Draft DL help, draft OL help (Molk?).

Janoris Jenkins. We need a playmaker in the secondary (aside from Delmas, who always seems to be hurt). Past issues aside, this guy's a stud. I hope he takes the Jimmy Smith slide.

Alshon Jeffery measure in at like 6'2" and didn't run the 40. Honestly, at this point, I would take a flyer on the GT kid Hill I believe. ran a mid 4.3 40 and is 6'4" so could end up being the next Mike Wallace.

Draft wants: Interior lineman, CB's and LB. Molk would be nice in the 3rd or 4th round and would fill a need with the Lions. LB or CB in the first round I hope!

TexanGOBLUE

February 27th, 2012 at 9:37 AM ^

My team is the Cowboys and I really want Molk and Hemingway. I wasn't happy with our rookie center Costa and we could really use those jump ball skills Junior has as our 3rd or 4th receiver.

brandanomano

February 27th, 2012 at 10:24 AM ^

As a fellow Lions fan, I actually would be ok with that. The secondary was exposed in a big way towards the end of the season and playoffs.

But it's not going to happen, so I think they go:

1. OL, as long as it isn't a reach/Mike Adams (same thing, basically). If there isn't a good one available then go with CB. I wouldn't mind a DE or stud LB either though.

2. CB or a S opposite of Delmas if there's good value. If we grab one in the 1st then switch these around.

3. There'll probably be a player that slipped a round for no apparent reason here. As long as he isn't a QB or RB take him. Need depth pretty much everywhere else.

We're at a point where it''s clear what the identity of this team is, and we have a great foundation to build on. It's good to be picking towards the end of the rounds so things can play out and Schwartz/Mayhew will be able to let the draft come to them for once, similar to grabbing Fairley at 13 last year.

We need everything

I don't really have a problem with RGIII, the thing that no one mentions though is that if you look at Colt McCoy's JR year stats, they match up almost identically with Griffin from last year in the same league, running a similar offense.  In fact, head to head that year Colt smoked Griffin (Yes, Texas had a better team).

It seems like the Redskins are going to trade the house to move up to #2 though, so I think RGIII is a moot point.

I either want Justin Blackmon, Morris Claiborne, or Trent Richardson with the 4th pick.  Then I want the best OL available with #22 to play RT.  The right side of the line has not been addressed for 3 straight years now, and I'm sick of it.

VermontMichiganFan

February 27th, 2012 at 10:33 AM ^

Interesting points about college stats/comparison.

I'm a Browns fan too and I think there are plenty of skill players to get- but if you think RG3 is a legit franchise QB and you can get him you do.

Stats in college are one thing- but NFL is about physical talent and abilities.  RG3 can throw deep, is fast, and is strong.  Colt is an ok QB, and maybe RG3 won't be any better in the NFL- but Colt is not a franchise guy- not even that close- RG3 may not be either- but he COULD be- and the Browns need that hope at QB

What I want: Trade up to get one of the Stanford OL (DeCastro or Martin) because the current OL is miserable at protecting Big Ben.

What they'll do: Something stupid like taking Nick Perry and grooming him as an OLB for when Harrison is gone on the belief that they can win playing 1970s football (defense and a run-heavy offense) rather than protecting Roethlisberger so he can utilize the array of goods at WR.

Pats: Stephen Hill

(although itll never happen, BB will take 2 defensive guys in the 1st round or draft 1 defensive guy and trade back)

Also, A lot of you will be very disappointed with Michigan players if you think any of them will go in the second round. Martin will be fringe 3rd round. And Molk and Hemi will be somewhere between 4-7th.

He should have done that LAST year, and didn't.  If he had drafted defense he might have another ring now.  Frankly, in the Pats case, it'd just be nice if they draft ANYBODY, and stop acquiring future picks.  But they need round after round of defense.  And should have stockpiled the last couple of years rather than getting a number of busts on offense. Unless they're drafting a third TE..they seem to do that well.

This is who I want if I'm the Martin Mayhew, and said players are available:

  1. Dre Kirkpatrick
  2. Jonathon Martin (A stretch that he reaches 23, but who knows)
  3. Janoris Jenkins
  4. Alfonso Dennard
  5. Mike Adams
  6. Mark Barron

Any one of those guys, and I'll sleep easy knowing it wasn't another WR.

As a Bucs fan (yes, I am indeed a Bucs fan), we've got a lot of positions of need, but probably the biggest is at corner. Barber's nowhere near as good as he used to be and is probably retiring, and Talib's probably going to be behind bars before its all said and done. So, the Bucs are a no-brainer for me: draft Claiborne.

I've thought about drafting Richardson, and while it seems like the sexy pick, I don't think he's worth it in the first round. If he is somehow around in the second, I'd pick him up immediately, but given the life-span of RBs in the league right now and how injury-prone they are (see: Adrian Peterson), its just not worth putting up first-round money for. Besides, Blount run the ball pretty damn well. He just needs to learn better pass protection.

It likely won't happen, but I'd like to see Martin or RVB drafted by the Bucs to provide some depth at DT, and possibly even step into a starting role down the road, considering Gerald McCoy has done nothing but get injured and disappoint in his first two years.

Bucs are likely looking into taking Manningham, so even though I'm biased and would like Hemingway to get signed with TB, I think we'll be all filled up on that point.

I really don't care as long as Peyton Manning remains a Colt.

I don't like the Broncos, but my username forces me to talk about them. They might as well get another quarterback who will publicy criticize the 'bro (me) so he (me) will go into beast mode AGAIN.

1. Need a center. Prefer smart players over physical beasts. David Molk to the rescue.

2. Need a wide receiver. Love 3 cone drill performers. Junior Hemingway had the best 3 cone result.

Brady and Zoltan get a couple of Michigan teammates. Win a Super Bowl. Done.

Team: Browns

Want: RGIII. I feel like except in rare situations (Brees, Vick), you don't get your franchise QB in free agency. They got locked up early by the teams they're drafted by because it's so tough to find a top 10 quarterback. So we're going to have to draft a QB eventually. I think that RGIII is one of those rare prospects that is absolutely worth our #4 and #22 picks. Though it sounds like the Redskins may outbid us, so the point is probably moot.

While we need playmakers, I absolutely don't think Blackmon is worth the #4 pick. He's the best in a relatively weak WR crop, and I still prefer Floyd anyway. If we keep the #4 and #22 picks, I would like Quinton Coples to bookend with Sheard on the D-line and giving us one of the better young D-lines in the league. With the second pick I take a playmaker if he's there (Floyd, Wright, Jeffery) or Vontaze Burfict to shore up our linebacking corps.

Basically if the question is, "Do the Browns need a [insert position here]" the answer is yes, so this is a pretty vital draft with nine picks in the first six rounds.

VermontMichiganFan

February 27th, 2012 at 10:35 AM ^

Good point about 9 picks in the first 6 rounds.

If RG3 can be a Brown I pull the trigger- to be a good NFL team you desperately need a franchise QB and he at least can be that.  Otherwise I hope they just go for the best talent so they can get the pieces in place to be respectable and maybe make a run at the playoffs in the near-future, or at least be ready to put the pedal to the metal when we final get a decent QB

JeepinBen

February 27th, 2012 at 10:27 AM ^

If I'm Manning, I don't want to get traded for. If I'm RGIII I don't want a team trading up for me. Totally mortgaging the future. For example, Manning signs with colts, gets dealt for 2 #1s and 2#2s (The Carson Palmer Package +1). Manning's new team can't draft him any help for the next 2 years. He could just sign somewhere and they'd still be able to draft him help.

As a Bears fan, this is what happened with the Cutler deal. Now we're in great shape to build around him, but Denver had our picks the first 2 years we had Cutler, so we couldn't draft him any help.

Team: Pats

Wants: Uh, defense, duh! I'd like to see pass rush in the first round, grabbing a corner like Jayron Hosley or Shaun Prater in the third, snagging Molk in the fourth, and a wide receiver, possibly Hemitron. The Patriots like the cone drill, and Hemingway did very well, so I could see that being a possibility. My preference for WR is probably AJ Jenkins of Marvin McNutt. If we snag Hemi with a late pick, I'll be ecstatic.

What they will do: Trade picks for future picks. You can never have enough. Or a tight end.

Team: Lions

1. Janoris Jenkins/Dre Kirkpartick (don't really have an opinion - take the best one that's not going to be a headache down the road)

2. Mike Adams/Jonathan Martin (whichever one falls to the 2nd round)

3. Brandon Boykin (A pure playmaker, also a special teams/return man demon)

4. Michael Brewster (sigh, two Buckeyes in one draft? YAK!)

5. Emmanual Acho (Productive LB who could provide depth - 5th round may be too late)

6. A.J. Jenkins/Nick Toon/B.J. Cunningham/Junior Hemingway (Attack of the B1G WRs!)

7. Kevin Koger/Ryan Van Bergan (Homer pick)
